Cain's walk rate has really increased this year. He had 20 in 206 ABs last year. This season he already has 14 in 88 ABs.

LHP Jon Pokorny, who only turned 22 in April, posted three scoreless innings, improving already strong peripherals, allowing only one of Damon Krestalude's three baserunners to score (see previously mentioned tough jam), allowing this Wisconsin contest to be quite the entertainer (not that Chris isn't entertaining in blowouts).

It's 6-5 Peoria after five innings as of 2:00 Central, so still time to jump in there if you wish.

Periard's K rate of 3.66 coming into today's action was by far the lowest of any starter in the entire organization. Chase Wright is the next worst at 4.38, and Dave Bush is 3rd worst at 4.70.

In case you were wondering Odorizzi has the best rate at 12.39, Yo is next at 10.36, Scarpetta is 3rd at 9.64, Fiers 4th at 9.41, and Cappy is 5th at 9.21 to round out the starting pitchers who have K'd better than a batter per inning.

Final: Peoria 11, Wisconsin 7

Peoria pulls away from Rattlers

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE,

WI – The Wisconsin Rattlers almost dug out of a deep hole on Wednesday

afternoon. The Peoria Chiefs built a 6-1 lead after 2-1/2 innings.

Wisconsin chipped away to get to within 6-5 after the bottom of the

fifth. But, the Chiefs pulled away with three runs in the eighth and

two

more in the ninth for an 11-7 win at Time Warner Cable Field. Nelson

Perez drove in four runs for the Chiefs. Chris Dennis drove in four

runs

for the Rattlers.

Peoria

(23-17) struck first with three runs in the first inning off Wisconsin

starting

pitcher Damon Krestalude. An infield grounder by Matt Cerda drove in

the

first run, but it was also the second out of the frame and left nobody

on

base. Krestalude walked the next batter and gave up a double to DJ

Fitzgerald.

Perez followed with a two-run single and the Rattlers trailed 3-0.

Dennis hit a

leadoff homer in the bottom of the second, but the Chiefs answered with

three

more runs in the top of the third. The first five batters reached

against

Krestalude and the Rattlers’ starting pitcher did not record an

out. Back-to-back singles by Cerda and Justin Bour put Peoria up

5-1. Krestalude left with the bases loaded and no outs.

Wisconsin

reliever Jon Pokorny allowed only one of those runs to score – on a

sacrifice fly by Mario Mercedes – but the Rattlers were down 6-1.

The Rattlers

(13-26) started their comeback with a pair of two-out RBI double by

Scooter Gennett

in the third. Two more runs scored in the fourth on a double by Michael

Marseco and a sacrifice fly by Erik Miller. Wisconsin made it a 6-5

game

in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Dennis.

Peoria

reliever Jonathan Nagel, who gave up the run in the fifth inning, would

retire

the final nine batters he faced to maintain the lead.

Fitzgerald

set up the Peoria rally in the eighth with a leadoff triple. That hit

was

the fourth of the game for the Chiefs’ left fielder. Mercedes knocked

him in with a single. Later in the inning, Charles Thomas and Hak-Ju

Lee

drove in runs for a 9-5 lead. Peoria added two more runs in the ninth

inning as Perez delivered a two-run single.

Dennis

accounted for the final two runs with a two-out, two-run single in the

bottom of the ninth.

Milwaukee

Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez, who is on a rehabilitation assignment,

was the

leadoff batter and center fielder for the Rattlers on Wednesday. He

went

1-for-3 with a stolen base before leaving – as scheduled – before the

sixth inning. Gomez is scheduled to make his second and final

rehabilitation

start for the Rattlers on Thursday.

Wisconsin and

Peoria wrap up their series Thursday night. Jake Odorizzi (1-1, 3.77)

is

the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Peoria counters with

Trey

McNutt (2-0, 2.18).

Tomorrow is a

WIXX Thirsty Thursday: Carlos Gomez will make the second of his two

rehabilitation appearances. 16oz beers and 22 oz. sodas are available

for

$2. It is another College Night. Fans may also play

Launch-A-Ball, a promotion that allows fans attempt to win great prizes

from

area businesses, immediately after the game.

If you can’t

make it to the game, you can tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM.

The

Miller Lite Pregame Show begins at 6:15pm. Game time is 6:35pm.

Wisconsin box score

Huge day for Dennis, who hadn't homered since April. Great to see D'Vontrey Richardson back in after leaving yesterday's game early; he was 1-4 and saw his first action anywhere other than center, playing left while Gomez was in the game. Cutter Dykstra started at the hot corner and was 1-3 with two walks. Cameron Garfield had a double but still hasn't walked in the month of May. Tough day for Krestalude, who as MH mentioned had been dependable up to this point, as least relative to most other Rattlers pitchers.

Wisconsin play-by-play

The T-Rats could have tied the game in the 5th but couldn't score Gennett from third with nobody out:

Wisconsin Bottom 5th

  • Cutter Dykstra walks.
  • Ryan
Gennett reaches on force attempt, throwing error by shortstop Hak-Ju
    Lee. Cutter Dykstra to 3rd.
  • Chris Dennis singles on a
ground ball to right fielder Nelson Perez. Cutter Dykstra scores.
    Ryan Gennett to 3rd.
  • Cameron Garfield called out on strikes.
  • Peter
Fatse flies out to left fielder D. J. Fitzgerald.
  • With
Michael Marseco batting, Chris Dennis steals (3) 2nd base.
  • Michael
    Marseco strikes out swinging.

Final: Huntsville 11, Tennessee 3

Stars 11, Smokies 3

Huntsville Stars

HUNTSVILLE, ALA - Zelous Wheeler tallied four hits as the Huntsville Stars (20-20) destroyed the Tennessee Smokies (24-16) by a final score of 11-3 Wednesday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium.

The Smokies took the early 1-0 lead on a Matthew Spencer RBI double in the top of the first off of Stars starter Alex Periard (2-2). The Stars offense, which has been quiet for quite a few games, exploded in the bottom half of the frame against Smokies’ starter Alberto Cabrera to take the lead.

With one away, Lee Haydel, fresh off the disabled list, smacked a single to right field. Brett Lawrie walked and Wheeler delivered a ringing 2-RBI double to center. Chris Errecart followed that with a double of his own to bring Wheeler home and the Stars had a quick 3-1 lead. But they didn’t stop there. A wild pitch moved Errecart to third. With two down, Andy Machado drew a walk to get runners on the corners. That’s when the bottom of the order came up huge. Martin Maldonado legged out a rare infield single to drive in Errecart. Periard solidified the lead by singling up the middle and the Stars had a 5-1 lead.

That last single chased Cabrera from the game after only two-thirds of an inning. The Smokies would use six different pitchers during the nine-inning contest, wearing low on their bullpen.

The wind picked up at The Joe today as Tennessee and Huntsville combined for five home runs. The Smokies used the long ball to cut the Stars’ lead to 5-3 as Russ Canzler homered in the second and Ty Wright went yard in the third. Lorenzo Cain and Wheeler both hit a bomb off of Jeremy Paplebon in the fourth. Lawrie hit his second of the year off of Smokies reliever Dustin Sasser in the sixth to make it 8-3.

The Stars offense would put the game out of reach later that inning on a 2-RBI single from Machado to go ahead 10-3. Lawrie would continue his big day at the plate with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to drive home Brent Brewer.

Periard (2-2) tossed seven strong innings to get the win. He gave up three runs on seven hits, but shutout the Smokies for the final four frames he was in the game.

Everyone in the Stars’ lineup tallied at least one hit, while Lawrie, Errecart, and Wheeler each had a multi-hit and multi-RBI game. The Stars scored as many runs Wednesday as they had in their previous five games combined.

With the win the Stars pull back within four games of the division-leading Smokies. They head on the road tomorrow to take on the Mississippi Braves. You can catch all the action on the Stars Radio Network and www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville box score

Lawrie's big game of the week? 2-3 with a homer and two walks qualifies. He also stole his 9th base but was caught for the 5th time as well. Great to see Cain flashing power and patience as well; at the rate things are going for the Brewers, he might find himself in Milwaukee sometime this year if he keeps it up. Congratulations to Wheeler as well on the huge day, and to Maldonado on the Jake Taylor. Second time in the last three games Periard's allowed multiple homers.

I hate to be picky, but it would be nice to see Periard rack up some more strikeouts, or at least walk a few less.
He's walking less than 2 per 9 innings. Can't really do much better than that. Only Cappy has a lower walk rate among the organization's staters. But agreed on the strikeouts.

Final: Brevard County 4, Palm Beach 3

Brevard County box score

The Manatees were walk-off winners tonight, breaking a 3-3 tie in the 9th on Sergio Miranda's RBI single. Miranda finished 3-5, while Kentrail Davis was 1-2 with three walks and Matt Cline walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Josh Prince was 1-5, and Erik Komatsu was 0-3 with a walk and a sac bunt. Again, though David Riske was the de jure starting pitcher, Trey Watten was the de facto starter, and he pitched pretty well, allowing two runs in five innings on two hits, two walks, and a hit batter while striking out three. His sinker did its thing: eight ground outs and only two air outs.

Brevard County play-by-play

The winning rally:

Brevard County Bottom 9th

  • Josh Prince strikes out
    swinging.
  • Matt Cline walks.
  • Erik Komatsu lines out
    to center fielder Thomas Pham.
  • Kentrail Davis walks. Matt

Miranda's walk-off single tops Cardinals

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

After taking a 3-0 lead after two innings, the Brevard County Manatees squandered it away, only to rally with a run in the ninth to beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 4-3 and split the four-game series with one of the top teams in the South Division.

Sergio Miranda got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single to drive in Matt Cline.

David Riske had his third rehab outing for Brevard County and threw one scoreless inning, while allowing a walk and striking out one.

Palm Beach starter Mark Diapoules loaded the bases twice in the second inning and while he was able to get out his first bases loaded jam, he was unable to get out of the second one. Erik Komatsu and Kentrail Davis both drew two-out bases loaded walks to give the Manatees a 3-0 lead.

Trey Watten relieved Riske and cruised early as he allowed just two baserunners between the second and the fifth, but Watten ran into trouble in the sixth.

After getting the first two outs of the inning, Watten hit Jermaine Curtis with a pitch and then walked Tony Cruz to put two on. Richard Racobaldo would make him pay as he singled to right to drive in Palm Beach's first run of the game.

Watten allowed a lead-off double to Alex Castellanos in the seventh and was then lifted for Brandon Ritchie. Watten went five innings and allowed two runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out three.

After Castellanos advance on a sacrifice bunt, Devin Shepherd singled to left to make it a 3-2 game. Ritchie then induced a double play ball to eliminate any further damage.

Ritchie allowed two runners to get on in the top of the eighth and was pulled for Corey Frerichs. Jose Garcia stole third and then scored on a wild pitch from Frerichs to tie the game at three.

The Manatees ninth inning rally started with a one-out walk by Cline. After a line out by Komatsu, Davis worked a full count and drew a walk.

It would be the man who got the scoring started in the first that would end it in the ninth as Miranda ripped a single to right to score Cline and win it for Brevard County.

Miranda went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Frerichs earned his second win of the season.

Brevard County will hit the road for a four-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs beginning Thursday night at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). The Manatees will return home on Monday, May 24 to face the Daytona Cubs.

Sergio Miranda, seen here in a prior game against St. Lucie, went 3-for-5 with two RBI, including the game-winner, as the Manatees defeated the Cardinals 4-3 on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)
