Jody Gerut: are we looking at a DFA situation?

Jody Gerut's career OPS+ is 104, and he had a season of 132 as recently as two years ago.

Fantastic, good for Jody Gerut. How's he been as a Brewer? I would bet he doesn't make $2 million with any other team. Gabe Gross is making $750k this year, and has never made more than $1.255 million in any given year. Are you saying what I think you are saying? That Jody Gerut is better than Gabe Gross?

I was a proponent of a Gabe Gross and Gabe Kapler/Reed Johnson backup OF situation before the season started. I feel both of these guys were easily a better fit for the Brewers OF situation than Gerut.

I am a little prejudiced toward Gross though. I caught my only foul ball off his bat http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Gerut can handle CF

This is certainly up for debate.

This is Gabe Gross of the .574 OPS in 2010, .684 OPS in '09

As opposed to Gerut's .608 in 2010 and .654 in '09? Gerut's decent OPS+ is based on two years, 2003 and 2008. By my calculation, he will have one more decent year in 2013.

It's really not up for debate. Gerut has been solid there in his career, and has been spectacular there going by UZR/150 this season. I don't think he's a spectacular CF, but I think he's very solid.

I'm glad it's so cut & dried for you on Gerut, but I think there's a lot more to him than the surface stats. If he keeps up a .217 BABIP then I guess I could see him continuing to stink like this, but I just don't think that's likely. He's a guy with enough career data to reasonably make the assessment that he should be expected to produce an OPS in the .775-.825 range against RHP & play a decent CF (& corner OF as well, of course). Clearly we disagree on him, but that's a player I'd gladly spend $2M to have in a given season.

If he keeps up a .217 BABIP

He no doubt will considering his penchant for the "ground ball softly hit to second base," as game day likes to say. Sure Gerut has a career .791 OPS against RHP, but its .660 in 2009 and .462(!) here in 2010 (combined covering 317 plate appearances). His career number are skewed by a fluke (yeah, I'll say it) 2003 and 2008 campaign.

Gerut has a .176 OBP(!) against RHP this year, and it was .286 last year. Forgive me if my evaluation of Jody Gerut (right now and not three years ago) is unfavorable. He wasn't worth $2 million simply based on what he did last season, which was less terrible than what he is doing this season.

Why oh why do these terrible players continue to write themselves into the Brewers' record book?

Again vs. RHP

2009: .235/.286/.374/.660 in 266 plate appearances

2010: .143/.176/.286/.462 in 51 plate appearances

Edited to include data on Gabe Gross vs. RHP:

2009: .233/.325/.348/.673 in 290 plate appearances

2010: .302/.326/.302/.628 in 46 plate appearances

Over the last two years, Gross has been better than Gerut.

For a 5th OF he's pretty good. Like others have said, on the preferred DFA'd list he's pretty far down. I'm pretty much in firesale mode right now, so Hoffman, Suppan, Zaun, Vargas, and Edmonds all make more sense to me.

If by the last two years you mean the first two months of the 2010 season, I agree with you. If you are actually talking about the last two years...what are you talking about?

Gerut has played well in the last 2 years when given regular playing time. In fact, one of those seasons he played fantastic. Just because it wasn't when he was on the Brewers doesn't mean he sucks or should be DFA'd. It means the team hasn't used him effectively.

The day Gerut is released will be one of the happiest days of my 30 years of Brewers fandom. Let other guys weakly ground out to 2B for a heck of a lot less money. If it weren't for above average defense, it wouldn't be hyperbole to call him useless. As it is, he's close enough to useless in my book. He bad.

Jody Gerut's career OPS+ is 104, and he had a season of 132 as recently as two years ago. Are you claiming that you thought $2M for Gerut was a bad idea coming into the season? I don't recall anyone with a real problem with that at the time (but I could certainly be mistaken). Guys that can hit like him & capably man CF aren't cheap.

That one 100 game stretch is pretty much all he's done since his rookie season in 2003.

As for my opinion of him coming into the season....I was indifferent. I certainly didn't understand the fanfare for him however.
