Marco Estrada recalled from AAA; Edmonds to 15-day DL with oblique strain

They need a reliever who can get outs

While I agree with this, I'd say they need pitchers whose arms aren't about to fall off from overuse due to the fact our starting pitchers have a hard time making it through five innings in less than 100 pitches.

Part of this {Estrada} is that he's on the 40-man. Part is probably that they need someone who can go multiple innings, even though Macha refuses to pitch relievers more than two innings, even when he has two starters in the 'pen. Part is probably also that they don't want to bring up top prospects both because they may not be ready, and they don't want to waste service time and an option to have them ride the pine. Finally, part is that Estrada has pitched very well in AAA, and hopefully will continue to have a "hot hand" with the Brewers.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."

The Brewers need:

- a defense that doesn't allow extra outs which would lead to pitchers going more than 6 innings which would lead to relievers not getting burned out which would lead to better pitching numbers over all.

Unfortunately this doesn't help the offense.

I've always hated the start his service clock argument. It's all about winning games plain and simple. Melvin has never gotten that nor never will.

This is what preturbed me about McGahee last year in some ways. He was one of your best players in the spring but somehow the wonders to be kept trying to convince us that Bill Hall should play.

What's the difference between winning 77 games versus winning 79 games? I would rather Melvin keep the prospect in the minors and gain that extra year of control, if the only playing time the kid is going to get in the majors is infrequent (Macha). Obviously that thought is for position players, as Macha is going to have to use anyone he has in the bullpen, even if they are a kid.

You don't solve the problem of an overworked bullpen by adding more short relievers. You solve the problem of an overworked bullpen by having starters that can get beyond 5 innings. The Brewers have an opening in their rotation right now. Parra's filling it today, but his track record is spotty at best. I'm all for a fresh face getting a look.

Estrada is not an over the hill AAA roster filler the way Mike Burns was last year (though Burns wasn't as bad as some Brewer starters have been this year).. He's got some upside. Keep in mind he's over a year younger than Parra. In 2008, he posted a 2.66 ERA at AA at age 24. What age are Rivas and Rogers, considered the best Brewer prospects currently at AA? You guessed it, they are also 24. If Rivas and Rodgers finish the year with ERAs of 2.66, everyone will consider them viable rotation options by 2012, when they will be the age Estrada is now.

"Estrada, 26, was claimed off waivers from Washington over the off-season. He has appeared in 15 major-league games (one start), going 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA."

I shouldn't have to explain why my enthusiasm is curbed. In addition, the bullpen is overworked not only from shorter outings by the starters, but also by the fact that the bullpen pitchers themselves are not getting outs and are having to throw a ton of pitches to get through only one inning.

Possible scenario: Estrada piggybacks Parra today with each going 4 innings.
This prognostication should win a prize if we had one to offer. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Unfortunately the game is 9 innings.

Who starts Saturday, Estrada or Parra? My vote would go to Marco. So I predict they'll start Parra. Maybe they'll have Estrada close.

Briggs nailed it. Nicely done.

I really liked what I saw from Estrada today. He threw much harder than expected, I was expecting 88-90 and he was 90-92 and touched 93 once and showed a really good changeup.

Wow, way to hit the nail on the head with the piggyback call.

I'd go ahead and plan on doing pretty much the same thing on Sunday. Let Marco start the game, give him 5 innings, and let Parra finish out the last four. If Marco (I refuse to call him Estrada from this point on) struggles, Parra can pick up another couple innings.

I really liked what I saw out of Estrada today. I had thought he was a typical 88-89 FB type guy with mediocre off-speed stuff. His fastball looked solid, consistently flashing 92-93 on the gun, and he located it reasonably well. His off-speed stuff looked quite good as well, as he located it reasonably well.
