Marco Estrada recalled from AAA; Edmonds to 15-day DL with oblique strain

Recommended Posts

Not sure why everyone is calling for Suppan to be released again. It's like it's supposed to be the new magic cure all for this team's losing streak. He has the second best ERA as a reliever on the team right now, if I'm not mistaken.

Vargas I would be fine with, as he's been pretty useless this season.

Not everyone, just me. I think at this point, if he's not going to be a decent starter, why keep him as a reliever, when there's enough other younger guys that could have a shot and excel, and are much cheaper!

Did he mention this last night? I didn't see anything about it so far.

I'm not sure if Estrada would make sense. I would think a reliever would be more likely at this point.

No, he said it on WTMJ this morning at around 7:20. My guess that's it's Estrada is based on 2 things. One, Parra is not stretched out, and they might need a guy to go multiple innings today. Also that Macha wouldn't have mentioned it if were Braddock because they'd have to clear a roster spot for Braddock. The other reason I think it's Estrada is that if he's not needed today, I think they'd give him a start Thursday to give Narveson an extra day's rest. Macha also said something to the effect, if the guy they are bringing up pitches well, he will figure in. The way he said that, it sounded like he meant the rotation.

The point is that you can keep Suppan around at least for a while and have him eat up the garbage time innings. Also since the money is already spent on Suppan, you would actually be spending more money calling up a guy to the majors, since you'd have to give them a raise to the MLB minimum salary (unless it's someone already under contract). Granted that is not a huge additional cost in the long run, but I'm saying there isn't any big rush to get guys up here at this point.

I think its Braddock and this is why. Macha said the pitcher coming up, if he pitches well, could find a nice spot in the bullpen for a long time. Could be Chris Smith as well. I don't think its Estrada. He did mention the bullpen IIRC.

I've always hated the start his service clock argument. It's all about winning games plain and simple. Melvin has never gotten that nor never will.

This is what preturbed me about McGahee last year in some ways. He was one of your best players in the spring but somehow the wonders to be kept trying to convince us that Bill Hall should play.

If they do decide to go with a starter, Kameron Loe might be a possibility.

He's not on the 40. I don't see the Brewers DFA'ing people right now, especially any pitchers.

Stern could be sent down, or Edmonds could go on the DL.

I think it will be Estrada.

basing PT on spring performance would be a bad way to make decisions. They got to the unlikely correct answer of playing Casey regularly as quickly as could have been expected given his career path to that point.

If they're unsure about whether or not a player is ready, the service clock should certainly be a determining factor. Otherwise, you have players wasting service time while struggling through like Gamel or Hardy in their first seasons, costing the Brewers dearly when they're in their prime later and no longer cheap or with the team because of a lack of planning.

Haudricourt confirmed in his blog that it's Estrada. No corresponding roster move announced. TH guessed Stern, but I think it might be Edmonds to the DL myself. The bench would be really short if Stern if back down and Edmonds still can't go for several more days. I think Stern sticks around until Gomez returns on Friday.

Haurdicourt also posed the possibility of Estrada starting on Thursday, though he was just speculating.

Possible scenario: Estrada piggybacks Parra today with each going 4 innings. Remember Parra's no longer fully stretched out. Whoever does the best job gets the start the next time around. In theory, it would save the bullpen.

I remember Macha making a comment this spring when Estrada was sent down to the effect that he liked him as a player, so I'd guess he'll definitely get a shot, and won't be wasting away on the bench. The 'pen obviously needs some fresh arms, and I long for the day we can get at least one pitcher on the staff who can occasionally pitch more than 5 or 6 innings to rest the relievers.

To address the other pitchers brought up earlier: As far as Suppan, I wish he'd be used as the long man while he's here. This is being discussed in another thread, but he should be put in to pitch 4-5 innings at a time when we're way down/up to give the rest of the relievers the night off. There's no reason to bring Braddock up right now. There are other relievers who can help at the MLB level, and since Braddock projects to be a dominant closer in the future, we could be costing ourselves a year of a dominant closer by bringing him up too early this year.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."
