The trade value of Prince Fielder (part 1)

They're willing to move a slightly above average about to be expensive player? Wow how generous of them! Or Wade Davis and his below replacement level production? Obviously Davis has upside but let's not pretend we're talking about major impacts to the Rays here.

I agree that Upton isn't exciting, but Garza could be outstanding in the NL, and we'd control him for the next 3 1/2 seasons.

I would be OK with a Garza and Davis trade for Fielder that would be fine by me. Davis might be a little bit to much with Garza already in the mix but having a rotation of Gallardo and Garza for the next 3 years would be nice.

Garza doesn't look all that special. Not sure why we would want him as the centerpiece of the deal.

I also think the AL NL thing is overplayed. Theoretically it sounds good but the gulf between the hitters isn't as big as it is made to be.

Agreed. This wouldnt be the ideal return for fielder but it would be good enough assuming we cant get a future "ace" . also graza and braun share the same agent, Nez Balelo.

my only concern is that both garza and davis have a shrinking b:kk rate.

With the Rays 2 games back of the yankees and the redsox (3gb) and white sox (4.5gb) closely trailing in the wildcard, the rays could really use an upagrade on offense.

Pena only has a .205 batting average. Excluding zobrist and crawford none of their outfielders have an average over .230. here is a proposed trade that i think would be fair for both teams:

Fielder- Hart- Coffee for Garza, Davis, and two of the following as a brewer fan do u think that would be a good deal? Is that too much for the ray to give up? would we need to send cash or take Pena?

I would love Garza for Fielder. I'd take Hellickson, Garza or Davis as the centerpiece for a Fielder deal. I'm not sure what some of you are expecting to get in return. Garza's results might be slightly above average however, if they were much better than that we wouldn't be talking about him right now. I'll take my chances with a 26 year old that throws 95 with an ERA+ of 114 (not that that is THE defining stat) over the last 3 years who pitches in the toughest division in baseball.

Yes, ideally you hold out for someone like Hellickson just for the service time aspect, but I'm pretty skeptical that any team returns that type of player.

Pena had a terrible May. But he hit .256/.364/.556 in June. He's doing Ok in July so far .233/.343/.433. Fielder is better but not that much better going forward.

That's all true, and I agree that Perez will likely finish strong, but I don't see how this is relevant to Fielder.

Tampa's DHs this season have hit a laughable 237/304/363/667. Fielder will DH for them. Fielder will have a huge WAR once he no longer has his defense subtracting from it.

If Garza and Davis and are slightly above average pitchers, than so is Yo... all 3 guys have approximately the same stuff, each guy hast a different flaw in his game. I have no idea what people are using to evaluate pitchers but whatever it is, it's wrong.

How can you dismiss the fact that Davis is a rookie and Garza has a career line better than any other pitcher on the Brewer's staff not named Gallardo, both of whom are pitching the AL East, easily the most loaded division in baseball? So Garza had a tough June, he faced Tex, Bos, Fla (2), and San Diego. While his ERA has climbed each year, his rates are holding steady, he's a solid #2, he can pitch on my team anytime.

As far as Davis goes I've already said all I have to say, he continues to be up and down from start to start, yet at as a rookie he's still having a better season than Wolf, Bush, Narveson, Suppan, and Davis.

I think it's ridiculous that people are concerned about ditching old soft tossing pitchability guys for younger players with live arms. The idea should be to acquire young pitching with solid upside, not overpay for established MLB pitching.

Because teams no longer pay people to be fulltime DHs. Ortiz is the last of a dying breed.

Because no one is doing it right now it suddenly a bad move? I think the Red Sox had some success with Ortiz, and the Rays would be infinitely better with Fielder. Also, the Rays are obviously OK with paying a DH, as there still paying Pat Burrel. The difference is Fielder isn't over the hill like Burrel.

“If you look at Mark Teixeira’s contract, he made the Yankees money. How

many teams would take on Mark Teixeira’s contract? I would say 20. The

reason is it’s good business to do that. Those players are invaluable.”

I highly doubt 2/3 of the league would have ponied up that kind of money for Teixeira. My guess would have been 10 teams tops and many of them already have 1B filled.

So Prince is going to get a Tex contract? Yeah good luck with that. Price has more power but Tex is basically better in every other part of the game. Prince just isn't in Tex's league IMO

I will be shocked if someone gives Prince substantially more than what the Brewers supposedly offered. Would someone really give him 6/140? That seems really unlikely to me.

Boras isn't helping the Brewers out here, we all know he is going to get traded so proclaiming Fielder unsignable to all but about 5 teams isn't going to increase his value.

I love Prince and wish him the best but I am going to laugh my ass off when Boras just bombs Fielder's next contract. Prince is going to get paid I just hope his contract knocks down Boras' ego a little.

My uneducated guess is going to be like 5/110 or 6/125.

It is kind of crazy that Boras turns down an offer of $20 Million a year. That is a lot of frickin money. Really what can you buy at $25 Million a year that you cant buy at $20 Million? Just crazy

Fielder is a better player for the money. Teixeira is 4 years older than Fielder, thats a huge difference in a 5 or 6 year contract.

First base isn't really a big defensive position. I would rank defense very very low on the priority list for a first basemen. I always get a good chuckle out of people comparing one 1B to another 1B and I doubt the Yankees paid Teixeira for his good defense at 1B I doubt that was even a consideration at all.
