Yikes Richardson just got ear holed in the bottom of the 6th, maybe a bit lower on the helmet in the jaw area.

Final: Beloit 5, Wisconsin 3 (7 innings)

Snappers stop Rattlers in game one

Chris Mehring/Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE,

WI – The Beloit Snappers defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-3 in

game one of a doubleheader on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field.

Beloit broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Danny Rams homered and drove in two runs for Beloit. The Rattlers

banged

out 10 hits, but could not cash in on their opportunities.

Rams homered

to start the Beloit second inning and the Snappers (20-14) went up 1-0.

Beloit tacked on a run in the third inning. Brian Dozier doubled with

one

out. Steven Liddle knocked him in with a single.

Wisconsin

(11-23) rallied to tie the game with single runs in the third and the

fourth. Franklin Romero, Jr. reached on a bunt single to leadoff the

third and moved to second on passed ball. One out later Scooter Gennett

singled to left and Romero scored. The Rattlers got their second run on

a

two-out RBI double by Michael Marseco in the fourth.

The Snappers

broke the tie in the top of the sixth. They loaded the bases against

Rattlers

starting pitcher Damon Krestalude with no outs on an error, a walk, and a

bunt

single. Rams struck again with a single to drive in the tiebreaking run

and keep the bases loaded. Anderson Hidalgo and Josmil Pinto followed

with

back-to-back sacrifice flies and the Snappers led 5-2.

The Rattlers

got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by

Marseco.

Wisconsin had runners at first and third with two outs and Gennett at

the plate

against Beloit closer Kane Holbrooks. Gennett hit a line drive that

appeared headed for left. But, Hidalgo – the Snappers’ third

baseman – snagged the liner with a diving stab to record the final out

of

the inning.

Wisconsin

would get a one out single against Holbrooks in the bottom of the

seventh, but

the righty struck out the final two batters to pick up his third save of

the

season.

Wisconsin box score

Krestalude's final line: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3K. Two hits apiece for Gennett, Chris Dennis, and Cutter Dykstra, who also had two steals. D'Vontrey Richardson was 0-3 with two strikeouts and, scarily, was hit in the head by a pitch, though he stayed in the game and seemed all right; Richardson also notched an outfield assist. Khris Davis was 0-4 and Cameron Garfield was 1-4.

Final: Daytona 4, Brevard County 2

Brevard County box score

Trey Watten pitched well and to his strength, riding a 10/2 GO/AO to 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits, one walk, and two hit batters while striking out one. Brandon Ritchie relieved and gave up four runs, though only one earned, in 1.2 innings to take the loss. Kentrail Davis was 0-2 with a walk and a HBP, the sixth time already he's been hit in 73 plate appearances. Erik Komatsu was 1-4 and Josh Prince was 0-3 with a walk. Sergio Miranda went 2-4 to keep his average above .300, though he's walked only four times this year after posting a respectable walk rate last year.

Brevard County play-by-play

In a scoreless game at that point, the failure to get Brock Kjeldgaard home in the 6th had to hurt:

Final: Huntsville 3, Montgomery 2

Huntsville box score

Alex Periard mimicked Trey Watten and turned in a grounder-iffic 11/2 GO/AO en route to allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout; he threw 85 pitches, 54 for strikes. Scott Krieger, in his second game since being called up to Huntsville from extended spring training, knocked the go-ahead homer in the 7th to power the Stars to victory. Lorenzo Cain was rusty in his first game back, 0-4 with three strikeouts. Brett Lawrie, back in the two spot, went 1-4 as usual. Caleb Gindl and Zelous Wheeler were both 2-4 with a double, and Andy Machado also had two hits. Brent Brewer chipped in with a double. Brandon Kintzler turned in a perfect 9th for his 5th save; he's spoiling us with his perfection.

Brevard County's offense shut down by Daytona

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

The Brevard County Manatees and the Daytona

Cubs were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the Cubs broke

through for four runs in the seventh and topped the Manatees 4-2 on

Friday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Manatees starter Trey Watten kept the Cubs in check, allowing just

three hits, while walking one and striking out one in 5 2/3 innings of

work. Cubs starter Christopher Rusin was just as good as he threw 4 2/3

innings of no-hit ball.

The Manatees first hit didn't come until the sixth inning, but it was

a big one as Brock Kjeldgaard led off the inning with a triple, but

Brevard County could not capitalize.

The wheels came off for Brevard County in the seventh, when with one

out, four consecutive batters reached base against Brandon Ritchie on

three singles and an error. The final batter of those four, Smaily

Borges drove in DJ LeMahieu to plate the first run of the game.

After striking out David Macias, Jake Optiz blew the game open with a

bases-clearing double to make it 4-0 in favor of Daytona.

Ritchie allowed four runs, one earned, on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Brevard County would get one back in the bottom of the inning, thanks

to a RBI single off the bat of Sergio Miranda that scored Kentrail

Davis to make it a 4-1 game.

The Manatees couldn't do anything with a one-out double in the eighth

from Anderson De La Rosa as he was stranded.

With one more chance for a rally in the ninth, Miranda drove in Erik

Komatsu with a two-out RBI single to make it 4-2. Miranda would reach

second on a throwing error and then advance to third on a wild pitch.

Kjeldgaard then drew a bases loaded walk to put the tying run on. But

the Manatees couldn't finish the rally as Michael Roberts grounded out

to second to end the game.

Miranda was the only Manatee with a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4

with two RBI.

Brevard County will finish up its quick two-game set with the Daytona

Cubs on Saturday night in Daytona Beach at 7:05 p.m.

The Manatees will then come back to Viera to open up a four-game

series with the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Final: Tacoma 4, Nashville 3

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE - The Tacoma Rainiers homered twice in the ninth inning to

steal a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Friday night at

historic Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.

With the loss this evening, Nashville (21-13) splits their four-game

with Tacoma in its lone meeting this season.

After Brad Nelson reached base on a fielding error by Ray Olmedo in the

ninth inning, Mike Carp belted his sixth home run of the season over the

right field wall off Chris Smith to tie the game at 3-3. Later in the

frame, Matt Mangini added another home run to center that gave Tacoma

the final 4-3 lead.

It was Smith's (0-1) first blown save in his last 22 consecutive

opportunities dating back to last season.

The Rainiers jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning.

Marco Estrada allowed a two-out double to Eliezer Alfonzo and then an

RBI-single by Ramon Vazquez for a 1-0 Tacoma lead.

Thanks to two walks and a fielding error by Tacoma in the next frame,

the Sounds loaded the bases and took a 2-1 lead on a Luis Cruz two-run

single to center field. Newly acquired centerfielder Josh Anderson drove

in the next run for a 3-1 advantage, his first RBI of the season in his

Sounds debut.

Earning a no-decision, Estrada gave up only one run on four hits while

matching a season-high eight strikeouts in his fourth quality start of

the season.

John Axford fanned two batters in one scoreless frame in relief.

Tacoma starter David Pauley earned a no-decision, surrendering three

runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks in seven innings. Reliever

Brian Sweeney earned the win while striking out two batters over a

scoreless inning. Chad Cordero picked up his fourth save with a perfect

ninth frame.

The Sounds welcome the Portland Beavers (AAA-Padres) to Music City for

the opener of a four-game set at 6:35 pm CT on Saturday evening at

historic Greer Stadium. Sounds starter Chuck Lofgren (4-2, 4.26) takes

the mound against Beavers right-hander Will Inman (2-0, 2.41). The clubs

split last season's series, 2-2, at PGE Park in Portland.

Nashville box score

Estrada continues to impress; he walked two. Jonathan Lucroy was 0-3, and Adam Heether had the day off. Note the opposing starter tomorrow.

For what it's worth my father who played D1 baseball didn't have anything good to say about Garfield and Romero in the field after watching them play today. He was very critical of Garfield's play around the plate, and apparently Cameron wasn't able to get a runner stealing second on a pitch out either.

The T-Rats are in extras during game 2 now in the 10th, tune on in.

Biscuits nipped by Stars

Joe Davis/Montgomery Biscuits

MONTGOMERY, AL – Scott Krieger launched a seventh-inning solo homer

off of Rayner Oliveros, and the Huntsville Stars (18-17) beat the

Biscuits (19-15) by a final of 3-2 Friday night at Riverwalk.

David Newmann’s first inning struggles continued, with Caleb

Gindl and Zelous Wheeler knocking back-to-back two-out doubles to put

the Stars up 1-0.

The Biscuits answered quickly, with Emeel Salem doubling to start

the frame and Nevin Ashley driving him in with a single, evening things

up at 1-1.

Huntsville wasted no time in taking their second lead, getting

singles from Andy Machado and Chris Errecart, and a double from

nine-hitter Brent Brewer to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Biscuits’ Emeel Salem hit a hard

groundball to first that Errecart couldn’t handle, and went into

second with two outs. Chris De La Cruz then followed with a double to

plate Salem and tie things at 2-2.

Krieger’s seventh inning bomb came with one out, and sliced over

the right field wall.

Matt Fields had three singles to lead the Biscuits, with Salem,

De La Cruz, and Ashley all recording two hits at the top of the lineup.

Newmann wound up pitching four scoreless frames after allowing a

run in each of the first two, and left having struck out six and

walked two. Huntsville starter Alex Periard took a no-decision,

allowing two runs on seven hits in his five innings.

Oliveros falls to 0-4 with the loss, while Mark Willinsky takes

the win with 1.1 scoreless relief to go to 2-0. Brandon Kintzler worked

a perfect ninth for his fifth save.

The Biscuits head to Birmingham tomorrow to begin an 11-game

roadtrip, with RHP Jeremy Hall opposing the Barons’ RHP Johnnie Lowe at

6:05.

Final: Beloit 2, Wisconsin 1 (10 innings)

Extra innings unkind to Wisconsin

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE,

WI – Game two of Friday’s doubleheader between the Wisconsin Timber

Rattlers and the Beloit Snappers was a game of defense and missed

opportunities.

When it ended, the Snappers had a 2-1 win in 10 innings at Time Warner

Cable

Field to complete a twinbill sweep. Yosmil Pinto knocked in both Beloit

runs in game two.

Wisconsin

(11-24) took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Rattlers

loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks and an error. Michael

Marseco knocked in the run with a single to left. But, Wisconsin

couldn’t

convert another run in the frame as Carlos George grounded into an

inning

ending double play.

It looked

like Rattlers starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi would make that 1-0 lead

stand. He faced the minimum through four innings. He had allowed a

hit and a walk, but the Rattlers defense turned a pair of double plays

in the

first two innings. The defense also delivered in the top of the fifth.

A leadoff

walk to Steven Liddle and a one out single by Anderson Hidalgo put

runners at

the corners with Michael Gonzales at the plate. Hildalgo broke for

second

on a pitch to the plate. Rattlers catcher Austin Stockfisch pump faked a

throw to second and Liddle bit on the fake. The Rattlers caught Liddle

in

a rundown for out number two. Odorizzi struck out Gonzales to end the

inning.

However,

defense could not prevent the Snappers (21-14) from tying the game in

the top

of the sixth. Pinto hit a leadoff homer to even the game 1-1.

The game

remained tied past the scheduled seven innings. In the ninth, Beloit

had

a runner at third with one out against Wisconsin reliever Caleb

Thielbar.

Liddle worked the count full and sent a screamer to third. Marseco

calmly

caught the line drive and stepped on third to turn an inning ending,

unassisted

double play.

In the bottom

of the ninth, Marseco almost won the game for the Rattlers. Cutter

Dykstra walked with one out and took second on a ground out. The

Snappers

elected to walk Stockfisch intentionally top face Marseco. The Rattlers

third baseman had driven in two runs in the opening game of the

doubleheader

and drove in the first run of game two for Wisconsin.

Marseco lined

a 1-2 pitch to center and Dykstra lit out for home. Angel Morales came

up

throwing after getting to the ball on one hop, and just nipped Dykstra

at the

plate to send the game to the tenth.

Efrain Nieves

relieved Thielbar to start the tenth inning and retired the first two

batters. But, the Wisconsin lefty would walk lefty Michael Gonzales, a

.134 who was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in game two, on four

pitches.

It would cost him.

Pinto was

next and he lined a 2-1 pitch to the right field corner. Pinch runner

Wang Wei Lin scored all the way from first on the double for a 2-1

Beloit lead.

Reggie Williams was next and he singled to center, but D’Vontrey

Richardson threw out Pinto at the plate to end the inning.

George

started the bottom of the tenth with a single and went to third with the

tying

run on Scooter Gennett’s one out single. But, Khris Davis grounded

into a game-ending 6-3 double play.

The Rattlers

are now 0-4 in extra inning games and 1-9 in games decided by one run.

The series

between the in-state rivals continues on Saturday afternoon. Eric

Arnett (0-3,

9.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit

has Edgar Ibarra (3-2, 3.92) as their scheduled starter. Game time is

1:05pm at Time Warner Cable Field.

If you can’t

make it out to the ballpark, you can tune into the game on AM 1280, WNAM

starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm.

Wisconsin box score

I'm running out of synonyms for "frustrating". At least Odorizzi was excellent; his final line: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. Four of his six strikeouts came in the last two innings. As mentioned, Dykstra had a nice night, 1-1 with three walks. Gennett and Richardson were each 1-5, Davis was 0-5, and Chris Dennis was 0-3 with a walk. Cameron Garfield had the second game off.

Wisconsin play-by-play

Wisconsin Bottom 10th

  • Carlos George singles on a line
drive to center fielder Angel Morales.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson
    strikes out swinging.
  • Ryan Gennett singles on a ground ball to
right fielder Aaron Hicks. Carlos George to 3rd.
  • Khristopher
Davis grounds into double play, shortstop James Beresford to first
baseman Steven Liddle. Ryan Gennett out at 2nd.

Krieger's key homer downs Biscuits

By A. Stacy Long, Montgomery Advertiser

Scott Krieger, one of Huntsville's newest players, paid the ritualistic clubhouse price for a go-ahead home run Friday night.

Krieger hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to give the Stars the lead in a 3-2 win over the Montgomery Biscuits.

Krieger's first Double-A home run and came in just his second Double-A game, so his teammates gave him special treatment afterward -- and shoved a shaving-cream pie into his face.

"I'll take it," Krieger said, still wiping his face clean.

It was a well-placed home run, landing just over the curved wall down the right-field line at almost the shortest spot from home plate. Right fielder Cody Strait could only look up as it dropped.

"It looked off the bat like it wouldn't carry over," Biscuits manager Billy Gardner said. "It was in the right spot. It kind of scraped the back of the railing out there."

The homer came off reliever Rayner Oliveros, who was making just his second appearance in two weeks, and spoiled a quality start by David Newmann. Newmann's six innings featured two runs and seven hits by the Stars, while Oliveros (0-4) came on in the seventh.

"He's had a long layoff and I thought he did well despite that," Gardner said. "It was a tough break for Ollie."

Newmann's runs came in the first and second inning and, without some nice defensive plays, there would have been more.

The Stars, with one run already in, had two runners in scoring position with one out in the second. Huntsville's first two hitters in the third singled. Neither time did the Stars add to their lead.

Third baseman Chris Nowak helped extinguish both threats.

He leaned over the dugout railing on a popup and made a diving backhanded play in the second inning. In the third, he made another diving backhanded play, stepped on third and threw to second for a double play.

Newmann retired the next 10 batters, which were the last 10 he faced.

"We try to preach that defense can pick up the pitchers, and it works the other way around," Gardner said. "After that, Newmann really finished strong."

With Emeel Salem scoring twice in the first five innings, Newmann left with the game tied 2-2. Krieger, a 19th-round draft pick last season by the Milwaukee Brewers, snapped that.

Krieger, who hit 13 home runs last year at Rookie-level Helena, was hitless in his first six at-bats with Huntsville. He had been at Milwaukee's extended spring training program in Arizona.

"I was just glad to get a hit finally," he said. "That was my first hit of the year, or at least the first hit that really counts."

From the Stars:

After the struggling for hits in Thursday nights contest the Stars came out swinging in Friday night’s series finale against the Montgomery Biscuits. The Stars, who managed just four hits Thursday, assembled ten hits Friday and the Stars wasted no time getting started. Combined with a five inning effort from Alex Periard and another four solid innings from the bullpen, Huntsville took down the Biscuits 3-2.

With two outs in the top of the first inning the Stars began a rally after Caleb Gindl knocked his ninth double of the year down the left field line. With a runner in scoring position, Zelous Wheeler followed with a double of his own down the right field line to put the Stars on top. But in the bottom half of the first inning, the Biscuits responded with an RBI single from Nevin Ashley.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the second inning the Stars would take the lead once more. After Anderson Machado and Chris Errecart singled to start the inning, with one out, Brent Brewer delivered his second double of the year driving in Machado to put the Stars back on top

Periard would roll through the Biscuits line up aided by a Stars infield that provided their starting pitcher with two double plays. However, Periard would encounter some struggles in the bottom of the fifth inning when Chris De La Cruz doubled into left field to tie things back up-this time at 2-2.

Periard was then relieved by Mark Willinsky (2-0 4.24 ERA) who gave the Stars 1.1 scoreless innings as Scott Krieger connected for his first home run for the Stars in the top of the seventh inning, putting Willinsky in line for the win.

The Stars would finish their night as Mike McClendon (H, 3) and Brandon Kintzler (S, 5) shut the door on the Biscuits as the Stars left the state capital with their 18th win of the season.

The Stars will be back in action Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium as they begin a five game series with the Southern League leading Tennessee Smokies. First pitch with the Smokies will be at 6:05 PM.
