Automatic topic subscriptions and unwanted e-mails from Yuku: bug allegedly fixed, but you'll need to manually remove unwanted subscriptions (reply #14)

Yuku pushed some new code last night, and a side effect is that an unknown number of members are being subscribed to every topic they post to. battlekow and I are among those affected. The result is that these members will receive an e-mail notification of every new reply in these topics.

If you're affected, you can stop notifications for a particular topic by unchecking "Subscribe to this topic" the next time you reply. I haven't tested this, but it might be possible that you could also accomplish this by editing an existing post and unchecking "subscribe to this topic."

These notifications won't occur if you use Quick Reply. Staff is going to be looking into this first thing this (Thursday) morning. Of course, there's no way of knowing how soon a fix will come until someone takes a look and reports back.

Yeah, this happened to me in the last two threads in which I participated last night. I found the unsubscribe option and utilized it, but still got two messages after. I didn't get new ones overnight, but maybe there hasn't been activity in either thread.

I tried editing a post and unchecking "subscribe to this topic" in the Bugs forum last night, but I still got six e-mail notifications for replies in that topic this morning.

On member is reporting success by manually unsubscribing on his account subscriptions page. To do that,

  1. Hit the Account link in your navigation bar
  2. Hit the Subscriptions link link in the notifications box (top center column)
  3. Hitting the Remove button next to any topics to which you'd like to unsubscribe
When I posted this topic, I remembered to uncheck "subscribe to this topic" right away when I posted the message. I didn't receive a notification when hawing posted above an hour ago.

There's an unsubscribe link in the email that takes you right to this page.

Thanks, battlekow. That was mentioned in one of the numerous topics at Support, and I failed to relay that suggestion.

I've been keeping my notification settings page open in a tab and reloading it once in a while.

This is the kind of bug that probably isn't the result of developer carelessness; I can see how it'd be difficult to catch in pre-push testing. The real key will be how Yuku handles fixing this. The login/PM problem was handled horribly. Rather than being provided with an explanation of the problem and periodic updates, the issue was trivialized by staff with patronizing and condescending posts.

If you happen to have a converted profile (yuck), you can access your notification settings this way:

  1. Hit the Account link in the old navigation bar or the wrench icon in the new navigation bar.
  2. Hit the Forum link at the top of the page.
  3. Hit the Subscriptions link in the second set of navigation links near the top of the page.
I don't have any subscribed topics in my test profile, but I'd assume that removing is similar to what we'd do in the unconverted profiles.

It shouldn't happen if you uncheck the "Subscribe to this topic" box. If you uncheck the box and you happen to preview, you'll have to uncheck the box again.

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone here who isn't being affected by this bug?

A temporary solution has been pushed to

our servers. Now, when you untick the subscribe to this topic box, it

will remain unticked and you will not receive any more notifications to

the topic you are replying to (or the topic you started. It will

remember that you unticked the box.

However, this

will not work in the chrome browser (it should work in all other

browsers)

This will be worked on further on

Monday.

I asked for clarification as to whether or not this solution worked in Safari. It's rare that Safari and Chrome don't behave identically.

Also, after unchecking "Subscribe to this topic" at Support (which worked), I see it's still checked in this topic. You might have to do this in every thread. Additionally, I see it's still re-checking itself when I preview. I'll follow up with another post and report back with what happens.

I just tested with this post. With "Subscribe to this topic" unchecked in the post above, it stays unchecked if one previews. I'm going to check another topic on this board to confirm whether or not we need to uncheck in every topic. I'll be back in a minute. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

My suspicions were correct; you need to uncheck "subscribe" in every topic that you post to.

you will not receive any more notifications to the topic

I'm not sure of that either. I just noticed this topic on my notifications page, but I'm not sure if it's my fault or Yuku's.

This bug is now supposed to be fixed. However, you'll need to manually

remove any unwanted subscriptions. You can access your subscription

controls by doing one of the following:

  • following the "change your settings" link in one of the e-mail notifications
  • following the instructions in reply #2 (unconverted profiles)
  • following the instructions in reply #5 (converted profiles)

GAME05, I looked at your recent post dates for both Brewerfan and BPS. I'm not sure why you were affected on one board but not the other, but hopefully, that's now irrelevant. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
