Who are you Maas Haas??? And how do you do it? Thank you for all you do here.

Great pitching today. I think I would wet myself if Rogers threw a gem today.

Haven't heard much about Kentrail Davis' D? No news, is good news regarding defense. Gindl and Green need to get it going. Haydel has been great, as mentioned yesterday.

Also, after reading that Gennet article, I cannot believe how small he is. 5'7'' 165 or something? He must be impossible to pitch to.

Please know that battlekow's emergence (tremendous waiver wire pickup by Brewerfan.net) and a wonderful "substitute teacher" in TheCrew07 has given me my sanity and a better sleep pattern, so please thank them as well.

Our challenge to serve you increases greatly when we go from four organizational games a night to seven in mid-June, but we should be up for the battle. We're gritty.

The Florida State League (FSL) is a 12 team league.

Space Coast Stadium (home of BC) is particularly brutal on RH batters with winds that regularly blow in from LF at over 20 MPH.

Team Batting

BA - .256 7th. Bradenton is your league leader at .281

OBP - .308 9th, Bradenton is once again the leader at .362

SLG - .326 10th, Bradenton will be a familiar theme here leading with a .414

OPS - .663 10th, Bradenton is predictably the league leader at .776

Runs - 116 6th, Bradenton not so surprisingly has scored the most at 160

2B - 43 10th, Bradenton has 67

HR - 1 12th, there's a Harry Doyle joke here someplace... St. Lucie leads the league with 25

BB - 57 12th, Palm Beach has drawn 126 walks so far this year

SO - 210 6th, Charlotte has the fewest with 181, St. Lucie the most with 244

SB - 37 1st, Jupiter is right behind with 36 on the season.

Individual FSL Batting Leaders

AVG - Jack Rye a Yankees prospect at .397 just barely qualified with 68 ABs on the season. Matt Cline is 12th at .329, Erik Komatsu is 18th .331. Shawn Zarraga and Kentrail Davis have the best AVG on the team, Zarraga his hitting .400 through 40 ABs, Davis is hitting .390 through 41 ABs.

OBP - Matt Carpenter a Cardinals prospect at .458. Matt Cline is 7th at .423, unfortunately no other Manatees are in the top 20. Kentrail Davis is sporting a .468 and Shawn Zaaraga a .442.

SLG - Cody Overbeck a Phillies prospect with an incredible .728 through 103 ABs. Erik Komatsu is the only Manatee in the top 20 in 17th with a .456. Kentrail Davis' .537 would be good for 5th if he qualified.

OPS - Cody Overbeck is no surprise given his SLG, he's sporting a 1.143 OPS thus far. No Manatees in the top 20, Erik Komatsu just missed with an .834, Kentrail Davis would be 2nd with a 1.005 if he qualified.

SB - Kevin Mattisona Marlins Prospect with 18. Erik Komatsu is tied for 7th with 8, Josh Prince is tied for 13th with a bunch of players who have 6

And That was right on the money regarding Matt Cline, with Zarraga being a nice surprise the BC offense might be on the up swing if Davis can stay in the lineup.

Historically the FSL has been a league that like the Midwest League has favored pitching.

Team Pitching

ERA - 3.60 6th, Lakeland leads with a 2.90

Hits - 241 6th, Charlotte has given up the fewest with 197, Daytona the most giving up 268

Runs - 113 4th, Clearwater has only given up 92, St. Lucie is the worst at 157

HR - 10 tied for 3rd, Dunedin has only coughed up 5 on the season, Fort Meyers a woeful 21.

BB - 113 11th, Lakeland has only issued 56, St. Lucie the most with 125. It's not so surprising that BB total directly correlates to the Run total.

SO - 216 6th, Charlotte has K'd the most batters with 260 thus far, that total is far an away the best. Bradenton is the next closest team at 228, Palm Beach has the fewest with 183

WHIP - 1.37 tied for 7th, Lakeland has the best at 1.13, St. Lucie is the worst by a wide margin at 1.56, no other team has a higher WHIP than 1.41

Individual Pitching Leaders

ERA - Bryan Morris a Pirates prospect at 0.78. He's old for the league but check out his peripherals, here's a glowing scouting report of him as well. Michael Fiers is 12th at 2.41, Wily Peralta is 18th at 3.31.

BB - Craig Heyer a 24 year old Yankee not so prospect leads with 0 BBs issued in over 18 IP. Corey Frerichs has the fewest on the staff with 5, Evan Frederickson the most with 17 in 11.1 IP, Cody Scarpetta has issued 14, Wily Peralta 13.

SO - Brayan Villarreal a Tigers prospect with 41 but 5 other pitchers have as many as 38 thus far. Wily Peralta is tied for 11th with 30, Michael Fiers is 18th 29... that should give you a hint how tightly packed the top pitchers in the FSL are packed thus far. Cody Scarpetta has 22 but has 1 less start on the season than Fiers and Peralta. Trey Watten and Daniel Meadows both have 18 in 19.0 and 18.1 IP respectively.

WHIP - Brayan Villarreal once again with a ridiculous 0.84. Michael Fiers is 7th with 1.01, Daniel Merklinger is 13th at 1.13, Wily Peralta just missed the top 20 at 1.32, Cody Scarpetta is carrying a 1.54... way too many walks Wily and Cody. Corey Frerichs, Daniel Meadows, and Nick Green didn't qualify on the list but are carrying a 0.86(!), 1.31, and 1.29 respectively.

On the pitching side the BC staff has been pretty good outside of Frederickson and Tyson, but the pitching in the league has been outstanding thus far. It will be interesting to see how the league ultimately shakes out after the 23/24/25 year old pitchers get bumped up to AA.

Unbelievable, the Rattlers invent new ways to torment their followers (and surely Chris) during each broadcast.

CF D'Vontrey Richardson just lost his footing while camping under a deep fly ball in the 9th, allowing the ball to roll to the wall and the tying run to score.

3-3 and the fun continues...

EDIT: No, it's 4-3 game now, Rattlers down. No win for Jake Odorizzi, potential loss for Efrain Nieves.

We already used excrutiating this week. Off to the thesaurus we go unless there's a late rally for the good guys...

Final: Cedar Rapids 5, Wisconsin 4 (10 innings)

Victory slips away from Wisconsin

Chris Mehring/Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE,

WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers could not hold onto a lead against

the

Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field.

The

Kernels edged Wisconsin 5-4 in ten innings. Mike Trout hit a solo homer

in the top of the tenth inning for the eventual game-winning hit. But,

so

much more happened in the game.

Wisconsin

(9-20) scored three times in the bottom of the second inning to take a

3-0 lead

and they broke Kernels’ starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs’ scoreless

streak at 19 innings in the process. Cutter Dykstra and Austin

Stockfisch started the inning with singles and both moved into scoring

position

on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Marseco. Carlos George singled to center

and knocked in both runners. Later in the inning, George would score

on

an error.

Rattlers

starter Jake Odorizzi looked like he would make those three runs stand

up for

the game. He struck out seven and allowed two hits through the first

five

innings. But, Trout started a rally in the sixth inning with a leadoff

bunt single. The Kernel centerfielder stole second and scored on a

single

by Jean Segura. Segura would steal second and go to third on a wild

pitch. An RBI grounder by Eric Oliver scored Segura to make the score

3-2.

Odorizzi’s

line for the day was 5-2/3 innings, four hits, two runs, and eight

strikeouts. The eight strikeouts matched a professional high for

Odorizzi.

Efrain Nieves

came on in relief for the Rattlers in the sixth and got the final out.

He

also pitched a scoreless seventh and a scoreless eighth. Nieves would

get

the first out of the ninth, but could not get the final two outs before

the

Kernels took the lead.

Randal Grichuk

singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Casey Haerther sent a high

fly ball to deep center field on a 3-2 pitch and it looked like it would

be the

second out of the inning. However, as D’Vontrey Richardson set his

feet to catch the ball he lost his footing and slipped to the ground.

Grichuck scored the tying run and Haerther was standing on second with a

double. Kevin Ramos, who committed the error in the second inning to

allow George to score, delivered a two-out RBI single to score pinch

runner

Justin Bass and give the Kernels (16-14) a 4-3 lead.

Wisconsin did

not go quietly in the bottom of the ninth. Marseco looped in a single

to

left with one out and wound up at third on the play due to a throwing

error by Bass.

Marseco scored the tying run when he beat the tag with a great slide on a

play

at the plate after George sent a grounder to third on the next pitch.

Trout quickly

untied the game in the top of the tenth. He lined a 2-1 pitch from

reliever Jon Pokorny over the wall in left for his third homer of the

season.

Tyler Kehrer,

who came on in relief for the Kernels in the sixth inning, walked the

leadoff

batter in the bottom of the tenth. But, the Rattlers could not cash in

the run.

Wisconsin

falls to 1-8 in one run games this season. Saturday marks the fourth

time

since May 3 that the Rattlers lost a game by a single run. In all four

of

those one run losses, Wisconsin had at least a 3-0 lead.

The Timber

Rattlers and Kernels wrap up their series on busy Sunday afternoon at

Time

Warner Cable Field. Wisconsin players will be wearing pink jerseys that

will be auctioned off during the game to raise money for local cancer

initiatives as part of a Mother’s Day celebration.

Fans may play

catch on the field before the game and participate in a post-game

autograph

session with the players. Additionally, Time Warner Cable subscribers

may

bring in their bill and receive up to four half priced reserve seat

tickets.

Eric Arnett

(0-2, 9.47) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Garrett

Richards (1-1, 4.63) is slated to start for the Kernels. Game time is

1:05pm. If you can’t make it to the ballpark, you can tune in for

the action on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at

12:45pm.

Wisconsin box score

No shame in getting beat by Trout, who's quickly becoming one of the best prospects in the game, but the continued defensive lapses and the skein of close losses certainly are frustrating. Odorizzi's sterling performance is a bright spot, as is Scooter Gennett's line of a triple and three walks, boosting his triple slash line to .361/.461/.536, a phenomenal start to his pro career. Richardson and Dykstra each had a hit and a walk. Chris Dennis drew a walk and Khris Davis was 1-5. I'm a little disappointed that Dykstra was DHing again today; I think that makes four out of five games there for him now, with only one at second base. I like Carlos George and all, but if I'm calling the shots, Dykstra/Gennett is the keystone combination.

Wisconsin play-by-play

All of Odorizzi's strikeouts were swinging, which is especially encouraging.

This T-Rats team is the most heart breaking I've followed through the minors. They are so close to getting over the hump but just haven't yet. I expected the big league to be up and down all year, but the performance of the youngsters in Appleton has definitely caught me off guard.

B-kow and I duplicated efforts within a couple of minutes, I should know better. Anyway, if you'll pardon me, I'll publish my own take --

Wisconsin Box Score

Nice effort from Jake Odorizzi after an uncharacteristic clunker last time out; as noted, both he and Efrain Nieves deserved better fates; Scooter Gennett legged out his first professional triple, walked three times, and continues to impress more and more each day; SS Carlos George made his first appearance since May 2nd, but committed his 11th error in his 14 games, a personal pattern not unfamiliar to rookie league followers in recent seasons -- this miscue did not cost the team a run; Pete Fatse suddenly just 2-for-his-last-23; Cutter Dykstra getting his AB's while as the DH, but it's going to be tough squeezing second base innings out of the indomitable Mr. Gennett right now; catcher Austin Stockfisch spells Cameron Garfield the day after Miller Park night game -- I just like typing Austin Stockfisch...

Wisconsin Play-by-Play

Nearly 3,000 on hand on a 46-degree cloudy day -- good job, Rattler fans...

Heck of a first inning for Jake --

Cedar Rapids Top 1st

  • Mike Trout singles on a ground ball to shortstop Carlos George.
  • With Ivan Contreras batting, Mike Trout steals (17) 2nd base.
  • Ivan Contreras strikes out swinging.
  • With Jean Segura batting, passed ball by Austin Stockfisch, Mike Trout to 3rd.
  • Jean Segura strikes out swinging.
  • Eric Oliver strikes out swinging.

Khris Davis with only a shallow fly to center after Scooter's 5th inning triple -- hate losing out on those less than two out, man-on-third scoring chances...

Donovan Hand got the start for Huntsville instead of Mark Rogers.

EDIT: Seems like it was Lee Haydel's number that came up this time in the Minor League Outfielder Injury Lottery:

Huntsville Bottom 1st

  • Brett Lawrie grounds out, third
baseman Leury Bonilla to first baseman Johan Limonta.
  • Lee
Haydel singles on a ground ball to shortstop Carlos Triunfel.
  • With
Caleb Gindl batting, Lee Haydel steals (7) 2nd base.
  • With
Caleb Gindl batting, Mauricio Robles picks off Lee Haydel at 2nd on
    throw to Carlos Triunfel.
  • Caleb Gindl walks.
  • With
Zelous Wheeler batting, Caleb Gindl caught stealing 2nd base, catcher
Jose Yepez to second baseman Jeffrey Dominguez.

West

Tenn Top 2nd

  • Defensive Substitution: Patrick Arlis
replaces center fielder Lee Haydel, batting 2nd, playing first base.
  • Defensive
switch from right field to center field for Caleb Gindl.
  • Defensive
switch from first base to right field for Chris Errecart.

Final: West Tenn 4, Huntsville 1

Huntsville box score

Mark Rogers did not start as expected; Aaron Morse reports that they didn't find out he wasn't pitching until just before the game, so it would appear this wasn't a planned push-back. Donovan Hand, fresh off the DL, filled in and pitched pretty well, but the Stars' bats couldn't get on track. Caleb Gindl was 1-3 with a walk, while went Brett Lawrie went 0-4. Taylor Green had the day off. As I pointed out above, it appears that Lee Haydel is the latest Brewers farmhand to suffer an injury. Brandon Kintzler kept his ERA

spotless with a perfect 9th with one strikeout.

Final: Tampa 8, Brevard County 3

Brevard County box score

Though BC got a decent start from Cody Scarpetta, who gave up two runs in 5.1 innings on five hits and three walks while striking out seven, the bullpen, abetted by two fielding errors, allowed a six-spot in the 7th inning to give the Yankees (what do they call them, the T-Yanks?) the victory. Dan Meadows and Corey Frerichs each allowed three runs. Erik Komatsu, maintaining his hot start, went 3-4, while Shawn Zarraga may finally be unlocking his prodigious power potential, doubling twice today. Josh Prince also doubled, and singled as well, and Brock Kjeldgaard also had two hits. Kentrail Davis continues to dominate FSL when healthy, on base twice with a hit and a walk today.

Brevard County play-by-play

BC rallied to take a one-run lead in the 6th, only to have the bullpen give it, and much more, right back:

Brevard County Bottom 6th

    to right fielder Francisco Santana.
  • Kentrail Davis singles on a
fly ball to left fielder Neil Medchill. Erik Komatsu to 3rd.
  • Sergio
Miranda out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Neil Medchill. Erik
Komatsu scores. Kentrail Davis to 2nd.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard
singles on a line drive to left fielder Neil Medchill. Kentrail Davis
    to 3rd.
  • Shawn Zarraga doubles (4) on a fly ball to left
fielder Neil Medchill. Kentrail Davis scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to
    3rd.
  • Anderson De La Rosa pops out to second baseman Corban
    Joseph.
  • Juan Sanchez grounds out, shortstop Addison Maruszak
    to first baseman Trent Lockwood.

Tampa Top 7th

  • Francisco
Santana singles on a fly ball to center fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Jack

  • Bradley
Suttle reaches on force attempt, throwing error by shortstop Josh
Prince. Francisco Santana scores. Corban Joseph advances to 3rd, on
throwing error by second baseman Sergio Miranda.
  • Pitcher
Change: Corey Frerichs replaces Daniel Meadows.
  • Melky Mesa

Final: Albuquerque 14, Nashville 2

Albuquerque Wins 14-2 Over Nashville

Nashville Sounds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds lost to the Albuquerque

Isotopes, 14-2, on Saturday evening at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque in

the second game of a four-game series.

The 14 runs were the most that Nashville (18-10) has allowed this

season, with a total of 28 combined runs being scored by both clubs so

far in the first two games of the series.

Tim Corcoran (2-2) picked up the win, allowing four hits and striking

out four over five shutout innings.

Albuquerque's first run came on a Russ Mitchell RBI-double in the bottom

of the second inning. John Lindsey jacked a two-run shot in the next

frame, his fourth homer of the season that made it 3-0 Isotopes.

Albuquerque tacked on four more runs in the next inning on Sounds

starter Chase Wright, as the lefty allowed a two-out single, double, and

a triple on consecutive plays. The Isotopes added another four runs in

the next frame, with two runs coming from RBI-hits from Chin-lung Hu and

Michael Restovich, and another two runs coming from a passed ball and

wild pitch from A.J. Murray.

Joe Koshansky put the Sounds on the board with his fourth home run of

the season, a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning.

Jay Gibbons hit his sixth homer of the season in the next inning, his

sixth of the season that made it 12-1 Albuquerque. After a Lucas May

double, Prentice Redman drove in the next run with an RBI-double of his

own.

The Sounds' other run came from an Adam Stern RBI-base hit that drove

home Adam Heether.

Jamie Hoffman doubled home Hu in the following frame that brought the

contest to 14-2.

Wright (2-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on

eight hits with two strikeouts in four innings. Murray threw two innings

in relief, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits with one

strikeout. David Johnson allowed one run in two innings pitched.

Trent Oeltjen extended his season-long hitting streak to seven games

with a double in the defeat.

The Sounds and Isotopes will play the third game of a four-game set at

2:35 pm CT on Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.

Right-hander Marco Estrada (1-1, 2.48) takes the mound for Nashville

against Albuquerque righty James McDonald (1-1, 3.97).

Nashville box score

Karma for the Brewers game, I guess. Jonathan Lucroy was 1-3 with a walk but committed his first passed ball at AAA, and Adam Heether was 1-2 with a walk and HBP.

West Tenn 4, Huntsville 1

Jill Cacic/Huntsville Stars

HUNTSVILLE, ALA - The Huntsville Stars lost their second series of the year Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium in a 4-1 final against the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx.

The Diamond Jaxx (15-14) took an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning off of a double by outfielder Joe Dunigan, followed by two singles from center fielder Kuo Hui Lo and catcher Jose Yepez. They added another run in both the 5th and 6th to make it 4-0.

With dominant pitching from West Tenn starter Mauricio Robles (3-1), the Stars (16-14) only managed to get one hit until the 7th inning when outfielder Caleb Gindl hit a single to second base. He eventually scored off of a double by right fielder Chris Errecart, making it 4-1. Unfortunately the very short-lived rally wouldn't make it a come-from-behind victory for the second straight night as the final remained 4-1.

Fresh off the disabled list, Stars (16-14) starter Donovan Hand (1-1) threw 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He was able to strike out three of the 18 batters he faced and didn't allow a single walk. Reliever Mark Willinsky came in for 1.2 innings of relief and gave up one run on five hits. He walked three and struck out two, while Casey Baron and Brandon Kintzler came in and pitched a perfect 3 innings combined.

The Stars head to Montgomery to start a five-game series against the Biscuits on Monday.
