Timber Rattlers look forward to game at Miller Park

By Brett Christopherson, Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE — Let the record show Wisconsin Timber Rattlers manager Jeff Isom will zip down Bernie Brewer's Miller Park slide should any of his players launch an offering into the outfield seats tonight.

OK … maybe.

"I'm not a big fan of heights, but I'll do it," he said with a chuckle. "It would be fun."

Fun wasn't the word being bandied about following Thursday's 4-3 Midwest League loss to Quad Cities at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

But there figures to be plenty of it today as the Rattlers eagerly await a chance to experience the big-league dream when they face the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Milwaukee's Miller Park in the first of a three-game set.

The remaining two games of the series will be played at Fox Cities Stadium.

"I went there when I signed, but that's the only time I've been there," said Rattlers center fielder D'Vontrey Richardson, who banged out two of Wisconsin's five hits and scored a run in Thursday's setback. "It was nice, especially the roof when you close it in and it's cold outside. …

"We're going to be nervous, going to be anxious because it should be pretty packed. But hopefully, we just settle down and hit the ball like we're supposed to. Hopefully, we'll be fine."

Friday's game will be the fourth for the Rattlers inside Miller Park. They took on Beloit in 2003 and '04 when Wisconsin was affiliated with the Seattle Mariners and the Snappers were partnered with Milwaukee.

Wisconsin also played there last year, beating the Peoria Chiefs 5-3 in front of nearly 18,000 fans.

Attendance estimates for this year's game were not available.

"It's going to be great, a great experience, great for all of us," said Rattlers right-hander Damon Krestalude, tonight's starter. "This is what we're striving for. We're playing here, but we're striving to get to Miller Park."

The club is scheduled to arrive in Milwaukee around noon. Included in a busy itinerary is a full major-league style lunch spread and a stadium tour before the team gets in its typical pregame work.

"It's about the dream," Isom said. "It's kind of like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. This is what we're working for. This gives them a little bit of a taste of what's to come. You go through the process of the minor league, and at times it gets long and tiresome. But it just shows them, 'Here's what you're playing for.'

"For one day, we're treated as major leaguers. They do a great job here in Appleton, but it's going to be nice to be treated as a big leaguer."

Krestalude admitted it will be nice to finally get the game under way, particularly since he'll be the one chucking the opening pitch.

"I'm sure everybody is going to have a little bit of nerves and butterflies," he said. "But once we get on the field, it'll be business as usual. You've got to do what you've got to do, which is stick to the game plan and execute your game plan to the best of your ability."

Which for the 20-year-old Krestalude means continuing an early season trend of strong outings.

He enters 1-0 with 17 strikeouts and a 3.75 ERA over four starts and five appearances spanning 24 innings.

"I'm sure the first inning is going to be pretty electric," said Krestalude, who threw at Miller Park as part of a pre-draft workout prior to being plucked by the Crew in the 17th round in 2008.

"But after that, you try to focus and keep your focus and take it one pitch at a time — just like a normal game. It's going to be a little tougher than usual, but I'm sure it'll be pretty good."

Please pass along your own impressions, photos, etc. from Miller Park's event tonight. Would love to hear from you...

Personally, I'm "stuck" at Fenway tonight for what surely will be a four-hour struggle with the Yankees. You guys know me, and I'd much rather be at Miller Park for the evening. Have fun!

Team Batting

BA - .268 BA 2nd, Lansing is now in 1st with a .272. Both teams were tied going into yesterday's action.

Runs - 144 2nd, Cedar Rapids is currently in 1st with 149

2B - 58 2nd, Lansing as a whopping 73 already in 1st

HR - 14 8th. Great Lakes has already hit 31 HR on the season, Cliinton is the next closest team with 27.

OBP - .343 4th, Quad Cities is leading the league with a .354

SLG - .411 2nd, predictably Great Lakes with all those HRs is 1st with .433

OPS - .754 2nd, Great Lakes is 1st with a .758

BB - 94 7th, the league leader is Quad Cities with 147!

SO - 207 6th, Dayton has the fewest with 190

SB - 25 11th, Lansing has more than doubled that number with 55

Just a reminder that the Midwest League is a 16 team league now, so having 2 prospects in the top 20 is very good, much less the top 10.

Individual Batting Leaders

BA - Bo Greenwell. an Indians prospect at .361. Scooter Gennett is 3rd with .352, Kris Davis is 8th at .333, and Peter Fatse is 15th with a .309

OBP - Niko Vasquez a Cardinals prospect and at ..450. Scooter Gennett is 5th at .431, Chris Dennis is still 13th despite his extended slump at .417, Kris Davis is 16th with a .410, and Peter Fatse is 19th at .400

SLG - Jeremy Sands who is a Dodger prospect is SLG a whopping .760 in over 100 PAs. Peter Fatse is 3rd with a .588, Kris Davis is 8th with a .538, Scooter Gennett is 12th with a .505, and Chris Dennis is 16th with a .500

OPS - Jeremy Sands is again the leader with a 1.175. Peter Fatse is 3rd with a .988, Kris Davis is 7th sporting a ,947, Scooter Gennett has a .937 in 8th, Chris Dennis is 11th with a .917

SB - Jose Valzdez a Cubs prospect with 17, Mike Trout who is Angels prospect is 2nd with 15, he's a name to remember. There are no T-Rats in the top 20.

BB - Conner Crumbliss an A's propect and Niko Vasquez are tied at 30, Chris Dennis is 9th at 18 even though he's been slumping and only has 4 in the last 10 games, he's the only T-Rat in the top 20.

Roof was open for the game last year. Having a feeling it won't be open this year. With weather this crappy, I think I'm going to skip the game.

Boo!!!!

I wish some of the other affiliates would play at game at Miller Park.

I can drive to Appleton to see the Timber Rattlers whenever I want. But I'll probably never see a Sounds, Sea Cow or Star game in person.

Agreed twobrewers, I would love to see the Crew play a scrimmage using their best milb'ers. Do it over the Allstar break at MP. Have Braun and Yo (with help from DM, KM, Seid, etc.) each draft a 20-25 man roster of our best and brightest, and make a game out of it. Shoot, you could even have a HR Derby too. I'd be there in a second. I'm trying to think how much I'd be willing to pay, and I think I would pay a lot, haha.

For a market like Milwaukee, this would work great. Soften the blow of trading Prince by introducing the fans to Dennis, Cain, Lawrie, etc. Give them a chance to meet these guys and see what they can do.

Team Pitching

ERA - 5.10 16th, Clinton leads the league with a 3.02

HR - 19 14th, Beloit leads with only 8 allowed

BB - 140 14th, Lansing leads having only allowed 69 on the season

SO - 196 16th, Quad Cities leads with 249 in only 242.1 IP

WHIP - 1.47 15th, Great Lakes leads with a 1.21

Once again the Midwest League is a 16 team league.

Individual Pitching Leaders

ERA - Anthony Vasquez a Mariner prospect leads with a .74. No T-Rats in the top 20, Damon Krestalude has the best ERA with a 3.75

BB - Erasmo Ramirez another Mariner prospect is your leader with 0 BB in 20.1 IP. Caleb Thielbar has the fewest with 3 in 17.1 IP, Nick Bucci has the most with 15

SO - Liam Hendriks a Twins prospect who I've linked to before leads with 39 in 34 IP. Once again no T-Rats in the top 20, Jake Odorizzi is the team leader with 25, Del Howell has the fewest of the starters with 9

WHIP - Liam Hendriks once again with a ridiculous .59. Damon Krestalude is 12th with a 1.00, unforunately no other T-Rats are in the top 20. Other than Jeff Suppan my boy Del Howell has the worst with a 2.29. Hang in there Del, it's all down hill from here.

edit. Bucci actually has the lowest ERA at 2.61 but he doesn't meet the IP qualification
