Dave Bush's fastball velocity: mechanics, or injury after-effects?

Yeah, I think that's what it is GH. I feel so bad for Bush, he was always a pitcher I liked. But he just couldn't afford to lose a tick of velocity off the 88-90 range he used to operate in. And, as we've seen, he has... and he's about as effective as Suppan now. Has to be super-frustrating for Dave. It happened on such a fluky play -- talk about your bad luck. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

You said it TLB. Really stinks for Bushy. Really hope he can get his stuff back, but I have my doubts. On a semi-related note, I can sure see how macha got his reputation for not backing his players. Bush never says boo, but you could tell he was frustrated and Rapuano is the aggressor towards him and what does Macha do? Basically nothing. Yeah he went out there, but it was pretty much the same as always.

I'm sorry but that isn't even true.

So two very bad starts now equates to Suppan? Seriously? If I told you that a Brewers pitcher would give up 3 runs or less 7 out of 9 games who would you guess that pitcher was? You will probably say Gallardo or Wolf right? I just don't understand how you can equate Bush to Suppan. Bush has a very good curve ball while Suppan has a very good look alike in Braddock.

You don't want to judge a pitcher by ER for single games, it is a terrible way to judge them. Look at tha game log, he has as many or more BB than K in over half of his games. He is giving up way too many flyballs. The first game of the season and maybe the April 20th games are the only real quality games in this game log.

Maybe not the perfect stat to look at but he was keeping the team in the game and that is what counts. As long as the starting pitcher is keeping the team in the game nothing else really matters. It doesn't matter if the pitcher is getting lucky unlucky or whatever you want to call it the pitcher was still getting results which in the end lead to the team staying in the game. The pitchers job is to keep their team in the game nothing more nothing less.

This is just not a good way to judge a pitcher though. If a hitter comes out and hits 20 line drives in a week but they all are right at someone for outs he isn't hitting poorly. If a pitcher comes in and gives up 5 BB, 1 K and 75% of his outs are deep flyballs he didn't pitch well. You have to focus on the things in the pitchers control and ER are largely out of his control over a sample of 6 innings. Dave Bush has not pitched many good games this year, regardless of the ER allowed.

Bush has been a ticking time bomb all season...he finally exploded yesterday. I really like Bush and I think he's been way underrated by fans prior to his injury last year. He just hasn't been the same since. You guys are correct as well...he just can't live at 85-86. I hope he can get healthy or fixed. If he can get back to where he was a year ago, he's a very effective back end of the rotation starter. Things are going to get crowded in Peterson's mechanics shop...I sure hope he knows what he's doing.

Referring to the Suppan DFI comment, I believe DFI stands for 'Discard For Ineptitude".

Now on to Bush. Something is up with him, I don't know if it's mechanics, age, injury or a 'dead arm'. I've been a booster of his in the past, but last night he looked terrible. He reminded me of Ben Hendrickson out there. Every 86 MPH 'fastball' was belt high or above. You could just tell that he was going to get pounded. His curveball seemed slow too, almost like an eephus pitch. It looked like it was breaking, but I'm not sure if that was just the arch on the pitch. He also looked really awkward throwing it. Perhaps it would be best putting him in the pen for awhile

Now that would be impressive http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

His curveball velocity has been roughly 70 mph for as long as he's pitched in MLB

I think that it was 64-65 several times on Friday though.
