I like all of our announcers, I think we've been pretty fortunate it in that regard. However I really enjoy the calls when Mehring and Wendt get excited. Chris' call of Garfield taking third on a bad throw up the line after he had singled to CF to score Gennett was just awesome.

Gennet sure has been impressive, hasn't he? At least offensively, sporting a slash line of .356/.438/.506. It's still early but with every at bat his numbers become more significant. Not too shabby for a high school player in his first run-through of full season ball.

Peralta is dealing. Rivas, not so much.

Wow, 9H 3BB, and 5R in 3.1IP for Rivas thus far... On the flip side Del Howell had a nice outing, "it's starting to come together Pepper"....

Peralta's final line: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. 13 Groundouts vs. 3 Flyouts.

Nice to see Howell with a nice outing, too. For whatever reason, I've liked him from the start.

He's everything I think many of us hoped Dykstra would be. On a related note, Dykstra has started the season on a positive note, he hit well and made a diving play yesterday.

West Tenn Top 4th

  • Defensive Substitution: Brent Brewer replaces left fielder Steffan Wilson, batting 7th, playing left field.

Huntsville's Wilson, who has played 50 games in corner outfield spots in his pro career, did see quite a bit of action in the prior inning. Odd time to be swapped out unless he's hurting somehow.

The T-Rats are about to lose again, this is crazy... The best offense in the Midwest League, all that projectable pitching, and a such a horrible W/L record so far this year.

At least there's Friday:

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Heading for Miller Park

WBAY

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will finish their series with Quad City on Thursday but the players are anxious for Friday.

That's when they head south to their parent team's Miller Park to take on Cedar Rapids.

It will be the second-straight year the Brewers' single-A team will play in Milwaukee.

"You walk in the visitors clubhouse and they treat you so well and you will see how things will be if you make it here," Rattlers infielder Cutter Dykstra said.

"I don't know about other guys, but it motivates me to try and make it to play in a place with crowds like that," Dykstra continued. "I have never played in front of that many people before, and there were nerves, but once I got that first hit it was like, OK, the bases are the same, the field is the same, it's just a bigger park."

Final: Quad Cities 4, Wisconsin 3

Rattlers have the one-run blues

Chris Mehring/Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Quad Cities River Bandits defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The Bandits scored four times in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 3-0 Rattlers lead. Jorge Rondon and Michael Blazek combined to strike out 12 and they held the Timber Rattlers hitters in check after the second inning. Wisconsin is now 1-7 in eight games decided by one run this season.

Wisconsin (9-18) started the offense right away. D’Vontrey Richardson doubled to start the bottom of the first. Scooter Gennett followed with an RBI double. Two outs later, Cameron Garfield singled to knock in Gennett. Chris Dennis capped the inning with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

Rattlers starting pitcher Del Howell kept the River Bandits (17-11) off the scoreboard through five innings. But, he ran into trouble in the sixth. Ryan Jackson started the inning with a single. Jason Stidham was next and he hit an opposite field home run to left to make the score 3-2. Howell retired Matt Adams on a grounder before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Hiram Burgos entered the game, walked Niko Vasquez and gave up a double to Ryde Rodriguez that put runners on second and third. Burgos uncorked a wild pitch that let Vasquez score the tying run. Edgar Lara singled to score Rodriguez with the go-ahead run.

Rondon, the starter for Quad Cities, settled down after the rough start. After the first inning, would give up a two out single in the second, and a one out walk in the third. Rondon retired the final eight batters he faced.

That string of consecutive Wisconsin hitters retired reached 14 when Blazek retired the first six batters he faced. The Rattlers ended the string when Franklin Romero, Jr. reached first on a dropped third strike to start the eighth inning. A passed ball got Romero to second with no outs. But, Blazek retired the side in the eighth without allowing Romero to move past second base.

Blazek, who struck out seven in his four no-hit innings, would retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for the save.

The Rattlers have lost three games this week and all three of them have been by a single run.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are in action Friday. They host the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Miller Park in Milwaukee. Tickets are available for just $10 at the Miller Park box office. Damon Krestalude (1-0, 3.75) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. If you can’t make it to the game, tune in to AM1280 WNAM. The Miller Lite Pregame Show starts the broadcast at 6:45pm. Game time is 7:05pm.

Wisconsin box scoreRichardson finished 2-4, the only Rattler to reach base more than once. Great to see Howell have a solid start, even with the 6th-inning damage; his final line: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Nick Bucci pitched very well covering the last three innings, striking out two and allowing just a single.http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=t572&gid=2010_05_06_qcsafx_wisafx_1&cid=420&t=g_box

Final: Brevard County 12, Tampa 3

Brevard County box score

Wily Peralta pitched six strong innings before faltering a bit in the 7th, finishing with a line of 6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, and 13 ground outs against only three air outs. Evan Frederickson relieved and, per usual, walked three batters in an inning, albeit a scoreless one. But the real story tonight was the offense; perhaps bolstered by the return of Kentrail Davis, the Manatees' bats went off for 15 hits and 18 baserunners. Davis led the charge with a double and a triple and four RBI, and Matt Cline, Erik Komatsu, Sergio Miranda, and Shawn Zarraga all had two hits, with Komatsu and Zarraga also drawing a walk, and Josh Prince led them all with three base knocks, a season-high for him.

Brevard County play-by-play

Here's Frederickson's portion of the 7th; notice how his lack of control actually helped him, as a would-be wild pitch turned into the final out of the inning:

Tampa Top 7th

  • Pitcher Change: Evan Frederickson replaces Wily Peralta.
  • Jack
Rye singles on a ground ball to first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard.
Trent Lockwood scores. Addison Maruszak to 3rd.
  • With Corban
Joseph batting, wild pitch by Evan Frederickson, Jack Rye to 2nd.
  • Corban
    Joseph walks.
  • Addison Maruszak out at home, catcher Anderson
De La Rosa to pitcher Evan Frederickson.

I was duped! I no longer trust anything Isom or Hook have to say about pitchers! Both guys pimped Evan as a guy who'd turn it around this season, and lord knows I was hoping, I have an affinity for lefties being one myself, but he's been more wild this season than he was last season. He currently has more BB than IP. He also has more BB than SO, it's too bad really.

Final: Nashville 3, Round Rock 1

Sounds Avoid Sweep, Win 3-1

Nashville Sounds

ROUND ROCK, Tex. - The Nashville Sounds avoided a four-game sweep by

beating the Round Rock Express, 3-1, on Thursday evening at The Dell

Diamond in the finale of a four-game series.

Sounds starter Kameron Loe (4-1) earned the win, allowing one hit with

four strikeouts and three walks over six scoreless innings. Continuing

his dominance, Loe has now shutout the opposition in the last 21.0

inning pitched over his last three starts.

Sounds closer Chris Smith threw 1 1/3 shutout innings to pick up his

PCL-leading 11th save of the season.

Outfielder Adam Stern put the Sounds on the board in the opening frame

with his first homer of the season, a solo shot to right field for a 1-0

Nashville lead.

Sounds catcher Jonathan Lucroy added to the Nashville lead by smacking

his first Triple-A home run to center field, another solo shot that

extended the Sounds' lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning. Later

in the frame, Erick Almonte hit a RBI base-knock to center that scored

Luis Cruz for a 3-0 Sounds lead.

For the Express' only run, Drew Meyer tripled home Andrew Locke in the

bottom of the seventh off reliever Mitch Stetter.

Express starter Roy Corcoran (0-5) took the loss, allowing one run while

striking out two over five innings pitched.

The Sounds travel to Albuquerque to open a four-game set with the

Isotopes, with the first game on Friday evening at 8:05 pm CT at

Isotopes Park in Albuquerque. Sounds southpaw Chris Waters (2-0, 4.03)

takes the hill vs. Albuquerque righty Josh Towers (2-2, 3.00).

Nashville box score

Not much going on beyond what's mentioned above. Congratulations to Mr. Lucroy, of course. Drew Anderson was 1-2 with a walk in his first start since rejoining the organization. Smith struck out three of the five batters he faced.

Nashville play-by-play

Anderson was thrown out at third on Almonte's RBI single in the 7th. Earlier that inning, Johnny Raburn was called out on batter's interference on a bunt attempt.
