Zack Greinke [Latest: Deal for Odorizzi/Cain/Escobar/Jeffress in place? reply 464]

Rotoworld sums up my skepticism nicely.

A Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel blog reports that the Brewers could be acquiring Zack Greinke from the Royals for Alcides Escobar, Jeremy Jeffress and Lorenzo Cain.

We have a very hard time believing there's anything to this report, but since it's all over Twitter, we can't not cover it here. Expect denials soon.

Whoa.

I really liked Cain. But we are also really deep at CF with Komatsu and Schafer. Odorizzi is a potential stud, but you have to give talent to get talent. I never liked Escobar as much as other, even his defense was overrated. Jeffress has potential - but a year ago people wanted to give him away for free.

Depending on a potential extension for Grienke and whomever is playing SS for the Brewers this year - I might love this trade.

What seems to add some credence to this rumor is that two individual sports writers have scooped essentially the same deal (with the later being more likely). Add to that the fact that both of the writers have a solid amount of credibility, and I think that it is indeed something that will happen (barring physicals).

But I guess we'll find out in the next couple of days.

RyDogg, with Odorizzi it's a lot more believable.

Exactly. The first report was light enough on the Brewers' end to laugh it off, but now... not so much.

EDIT: We don't have a legit starter in their system now and that is still a major concern.

Mark Rogers.

I say forget Betancourt. Just get a defensive stud like Adam Everett (okay, maybe not that bad of a hitter) to anchor the infield. Betancourt has a -1.1 WAR over the past two years combined. That's just awful.

I'd rather pay someone $1 million and solidify the IF defense more than someone to hit crappy and field crappy and cost several million.

I was really exciting about hearing about this deal until i heard Odorizzi was in play. With how stacked the Phillies are, I just dont see the Brewers overtaking them. Odorizzi is the pitcher we've been waiting for, the ace that you find after drafting all those busts in the first 2 rounds. Now we give up 6 cheap years of him, 6 years of a dominant closer type in Jeffress, 6 years of CF Cain, and 5 of Escobar? Talk about mortgaging your future on an outside shot.. I guess Melvin feels its "win now" or get fired, anyways. Not much for him to lose, here. But after these next 2 years are up, it's gonna be a long, long drought for Brewers fans. It will be the same old story of trying unsuccessfully to acquire starting pitching, while praying some scrub draft pick pans out.

You know, we very well might have the worst minor league system if this goes through.

I'm okay with that. We've graduated a lot of guys in the last couple of years, and this sets us up to contend for at least two years.

Everything is a risk. I'm just going to enjoy it if it does go through.

The Brewers still have Rogers and Rivas who are the closest SP's to the Majors. That gives me much needed comfort.

One the one hand, out minor league system is toast. Which stinks.

On the other hand, if Melvin and Attanasio dont go cheap they can reload in a hurry with two picks in the top 15 this June and presumably two picks in in the first round plus a sandwich pick in the supplemental in 2012 draft after losing Fielder. That could be 4 very high draft picks tossed into the system.

But yeah, if this is true, I wont be checking in on the Power 50 much this season, hopefully the big club gives me no reason to change that stance.

Not big on this trade at all. Seems like we are shooting for the stars in 2011 if this is true. Lets look at down the road. We have no firstbase man ready to take over for Prince next year if no extension is signed, Same with Weeks. So now we end up with holes in CF,SS,1B,and 2B. Plus our catcher is not an offensive powerhouse and I really expect Mcghee production to go way down once Prince is gone. If we sign Greinke and/or Marcum to extensions it will not give us much room to negotiate with free agents to fill our week areas. If we dont sign either we may be looking at a ton of draft picks who may or may not be ready by 2016 or 2017.

I think this team could be looking at what the Giants did and think we now know the magic formula. I would rather explore my options with other pitchers
