Zack Greinke [Latest: Deal for Odorizzi/Cain/Escobar/Jeffress in place? reply 464]

This looks like a pretty sucky deal for the Royals. The only player that we would be giving up is Cain. He is by no means a sure thing. Jeffress looks like a reliever right now and Escobar like a no-hit all glove SS.

or what colbyjack said.

I blame Wang.

The rumor last week was that they were looking for middle infield and CF prospects in return for Greinke.

I understand that, my point is that no GM should make a trade just to address current needs for a player like Greinke. You shouldn't try to get too cute addressing current needs when you're about to trade your best player. This has been a long standing point of mine over the years, and it is a similar premise that bit the Twins when they traded Johan Santana to the Mets. At the time they claimed they didn't want to trade Santana to an AL team despite the fact that both the Yankees and Red Sox reportedly had better offers on the table than what the Twins got in return.

Get the best players, regardless of position, and move forward. I feel the same way about dealing Fielder...don't pigeon-hole yourself and only look for the best pitching-based package, which could suck (see the return for Jeff Cirillo).

Escobar was the #12 prospect in all of baseball going into last season - a poor rookie season at the plate doesn't erase all his value.

If this wasn't the Royals I'd dismiss this rumor out of hand. But this is the team that wanted Beatancourt and Kendall and Francouer and Cabrera.

You greatly underestimate Dayton Moore's ability to suck. I'm counting on that factor to see this deal confirmed tomorrow.

I'll also feel really badly for Breen if this deal either falls through, or if his rumor/source was wrong. He's really putting his reputation out there to be shredded to pieces.

EDIT: If it *does* happen, though, Breen will have scooped both MIL's & KC's beat writers.

I agree with that endaround on the Royals assessment overall, but I also recognize that Escobar was one of the top prospects in all of baseball at this time last year as TheCrew noted. We may be a little down on Escobar after the season he had (not to mention the winter he's having), and that his value, particularly as a shortstop, is greater than many to most of us, myself included, are giving him credit for.

WSSP has been known to conjure up a false rumor or two every year at the trade deadline, and yet they continue to have a following despite the fact that I have yet to see anything that would come close to giving them any sort of credibility. Breen is wording his tweets well in the event that if he's wrong (or just making this up), starting with his trepidation of posting this rumor to begin with, he can come out of this relatively unscathed fairly easily.

It doesn't erase all his value but there were already questions about his bat and he fell completely flat. His value was all in his glove and that looked shaky as well. I think that #12 ranking was overinflated.

TooLiveBrew]While that's all true, cj, if I were him I'd be anxious right now unless I had unshakable faith in my source(s)
My hunch is that Jim's faith in his source is pretty solid, otherwise he wouldn't have posted what he did when he did. I don't think we have a badgerblogger situation here.

We'll see. I have to get off the internets for a while so I don't spend all night refreshing this thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'll check back later & read through more comments about BF posters going bonkers.

Of course, there's always the commenter moneymike88 on the Bernie's Crew blog: "God I hope this isn't true. They are giving up way to much." Way too much, folks.

"..... Brewers would send the Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, shortstop Alcides Escobar and prospect pitchers Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress for Greinke, who went 10-14 with a 4.17 ERA last season with Kansas City."

Well, now that sounds a lot more likely.

By the way, the "it will be announced Monday" part is the part that tells me this rumor is false.

Why -- is it common for official press conferences to take place on the weekend?

This rumor doesnt sound legit.

If the blogger is making comments like "not sure if I should go with it" and he doesnt want to look foolish, then why not report the rumor as "I have heard Milwaukee and KC are talking...here are the names...nothing is imminent"??? That way, it reads as speculation...not, they made a deal and it will be announced Monday.

FWIW, Jim Breen is not a fly-by-night blogger. He's been at it for quite some time and is pretty well respected. If he says he knows something, I would take him at his word.

Oh boy, giving up Odorizzi would really make me sour on this deal unless we can extend Greinke.
