Zack Greinke [Latest: Deal for Odorizzi/Cain/Escobar/Jeffress in place? reply 464]

Invader3K[/b]]Of course if the fans continue to not bother showing up at Tropicana despite the team's excellent start, the ownership might just say "nuts to this" and not bother trying to make any big moves this year or next.
That could very well be their decision and I couldn't blame them for it. I don't get it really. Why the lack of support for a good team? Is it the location of the stadium, the stadium itself, the demographics of the state, the whether, other entertainment options? Whatever it is, it's disappointing as a baseball fan to see that lack of support. Did they ever get their new stadium passed?

The Rays management has stated this off season that they would be cutting back on their payroll after this year and would be bringing it back down. I don't see why they would trade for Fielder if they were thinking about doing that. Though I wouldn't mind an Upton plus a pitching prospect for Fielder I think that would be a fair deal for both sides. I just do not see the Rays going for Fielder with his salary approaching the $15-18m range for next season. I believe the Rays GM was quoted as saying the team would be dropping their payroll back down to the $40-50m range I will have to re dig that article up though I can't find it right now but I do know the Rays were looking to reduce their payroll after this year. In a recent article I believe Crawford was quoted as saying that he and Pena wouldn't be returning to the Rays if that means anything at all.

As I understand it, the stadium is not in a great location, and is akin to the Metrodome as far as being a mundane baseball viewing experience. Still, that isn't enough of an excuse in my mind. The Rays should probably look at cutting their losses and move to Portland or somewhere else that would actually appreciate having a competitive baseball team.

I was visiting family 2 year's ago and went to a Yankee's / Rays game in Tampa. (It was the game where MLB had their very first review, off of A-Rod's HR) anyhow that is one of the worst stadiums I have ever seen. I would rather have County Stadium back then get that stadium. The stadium was run down ... the grass/turf looked horrible.

And on top of it, it's located in the hood. I carried my keys in my hands on the way back to the car in case I got jumped. Even with the Yankee's in town and from what I hear a lot of Yankee fans around Tampa, the stadium wasn't even close to being sold out.

I don't see how the Rays don't look into moving. You have a great team in a dump of a stadium and a horrible fan base.

And for the Greinke trade comments, we gave up our #1 prospect (LaPorta) with our #4 (Brantley) and got a half a year of Sabathia. Our #1 and #4 now is Lucroy and Gamel. Then you add in the fact it isn't a half year rental and you will need to up the ante.

I guess it depends on where you look for that prospect #1 though. According to the last Power 50 before the trade (http://www.brewerfan.net/...Power50.do?power50Id=86) LaPorta was #2 and Brantley was #10 (Bryson was #24 and Jackson was unlisted). If we use Brewerfan's current Power 50, the #2 is Lawrie and #10 is Taylor Green. I know you'd have to include much more because you'd be getting him for 2 years, but my amended offer included prospect #s 3 (Braddock), 4 (Gamel), 5 (Salome) and 15 (Scarpetta), plus Manny Parra (thats's according to the power 50. I tend to side with this site more). 3 of an organizations top 5 and 4 of an organizations top 15 prospects, plus a young left handed pitcher who throws in the low 90's is a pretty good start.

Some interesting stuff on Greinke, regarding the future of the Royals and his point of view on the matter..

Per Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star

Regarding KC's farm system:

“There’s no reason for me to get real excited about it,” he said,

“because the chance of more than one of them making a major impact by

the time my contract is up is pretty slim.”

On staying in KC past his contract:

“It depends more on the team now,” he admitted. “We’ll see. This is at

least the third full re-start/rebuilding phase since I’ve been here.

And, obviously, none of them have worked. This one hasn’t even really

started yet.”

He doesn't seem happy with the way its being run in KC, but he says he likes the town. My guess is he likes the non-major market. Maybe he'd like Milwaukee.. we can only dream

If we want to part with Lawrie plus Odorizzi, probably plus more, I think we could get him. It's just whether or not it'd be worth the price for two seasons of Grienke (he'll be a FA in 2013)

Can we actually say the price would be that high for 2 years of Grienke based on what we saw at the deadline? I think he's definitely worth a look if the Brewers are serious at being potentially competitive next year. We could reasonably trade 3 or so prospects from AA to low A and not seriously hurt the next wave. That would also seem to match up with KC's time frame.

If he would want to play in Milwaukee (I have no idea if he has a no-trade clause or not), Greinke is exactly the type of guy the Brewers should be targeting this offseason. We can afford to trade for a pitcher or two that makes a higher salary this next year or two.

Hart, Casey, Parra, Rivas, Loe, Arnett. I can't see them turning this down. Only Hart and Loe hurt us, Zach replaces Parra, Gamel replaces Casey, maybe they can turn a pig's ear into a silk purse, which would be great.

Since most agree that Prince will be traded this off-season would a 3-team trade make some sense here? Brewers get Greinke while keeping the farm system in tact, Team X gets Prince, and the Royals get prospects.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

I agree that this would be our only chance at him. I don't think we would part with the prospects necessary from our own farm system.

There is no way that 1 season of Prince will get us ZG in a 3 way trade, we would have to throw in some prospects. KC is going to ask for the moon for ZG.
No, I don't think we were suggesting it would. But I don't think the club would give up the necessary value solely from our minor league system for Greinke, it's too much. If we can use Fielder to help make the trade, it considerably lowers the strain we would put on the farm system.

Sure they would turn that down. You are basically sending them Rivas and Casey. All of the others don't have much value.

I think Hart would have at least as much value as Casey. Even if the Royals didn't want to keep him and pay him, which they could easily do as his contract certainly isn't cost prohibitive, but even then they could turn around and trade him.

I agree this isn't going to get Greinke though. Arnett? At this point he's nothing more than a "why not, he was a 1st rounder" type guy. He has very little value. Loe I can't seeing having much value, Parra has very little other than again, taking a fliar on him because he's got a good arm.

Again though, like Prince, you could trade Casey and Corey, get back whatever prospects you can, turn around, trade those prospects+Rivas and probably Lawrie for Greinke. At that point I don't see that being worth it. You're giving up way too much. It would be helpful if it wasn't for Dayton Moore, a notoriously difficult GM to deal with(along with Sabean and Colletti).

Yea I am serious. Thats a pretty bad offer. I assume you are only asking because I didn't mention Hart as having value. He is scheduled to make around $9 mil a season for the next 3 years. Obviously its debatable if this year's Hart is the Hart you are going to get going forward, but I think the chance he is worth $26 mil over the life of that contract is around 50%.
