Zack Greinke [Latest: Deal for Odorizzi/Cain/Escobar/Jeffress in place? reply 464]

Doesn't look like anything is coming soon:

Unable to confirm Greinke rumors at this point. Sounds like it could just be renewed effort by #Brewers -- not an imminent deal. Tiring day.

Since he wasn't able to confirm anything, it looks like he's not going to perpetuate the rumor right now. Good for him.

"More concrete information on the #Brewers and Greinke. Don't know whether to come forth w/ info and risk looking like a fool next week..." That again from Breen.

Makes me wonder. Does his "concrete information" involve us and the Royals being close on a deal, and does he not want to look like a fool if it falls through?

Three players... my guess is Gamel, Cain, & Axford? Maybe not Axford, but Jeffress/Rogers? Ugh, could even be Cain+Rogers+Jeffress, come to think of it.

Escobar, Jefferess, & Gomez would be my guess. Just too hard to part with Cain.

That's not even close. Gomez has essentially zero value in trade imo.

Wait, if we move Escobar, who plays shortstop?

Renteria and Cruz

If we sign Renteria, I have a feeling we'd be more likely to see a Counsell/Renteria platoon, with Cruz serving as the utility guy on the bench.

Agreed wibadgers, I would love to know what Breen knows.

Oh boy, would I love to know what Breen knows.

I'm sure everybody would love to know what Jim Breen knows including Tom H, Gammons, Heyman, McCalvy and everybody in the baseball nation. Just a hunch... :>)

Based on what I've seen from Escobar, I wouldn't be that upset if he got traded. I wouldn't be too happy if it's also Jeffress and Rogers. I kind of hope it's not Cain, just because I really don't want to watch Gomez and Dickerson play CF next year. Although, I guess Cain being involved would be ok if we get to keep Jeffress or Rogers. I just really don't know if we can get by with old guys like Renteria and Counsell manning SS this year. I don't see either of them holding up for the long haul. I guess a platoon would be ok, but it would be nice if we had some better options.

From Jim Breen,

"Source tells me #Brewers have traded SS Alcides Escobar, CF Lorenzo Cain, and RHP Jeremy Jeffress for RHP Zack Greinke, SS Betancourt + $2M."

"Still has not been confirmed w/in organization, but the rumor is the deal will be announced on Monday. #Brewers"

Edit: Seems too good to be true on outset... Extremely high sell on Esky and Cain. Not the upside of the ridiculous rumored requests from the Jays and Nats, but 17 years of control on a top SS prospect, a pitcher with a few MLB innings and a 101 -mph FB, and a CF with above average D who hit .300+ and might steal 40 in a season—and they've all shown they belong in the MLB when given the chance—is pretty valuable.

If true I think we are going to miss Cain more than Escobar. Hole in center will be huge. Wonder if they may move Hart to Center and put Gamel in right. Then Bentancourt /Counsell at SS.

With that said though what a get, especially if extension was/is reached.

Paint me on a skeptic on this report. If it does happen, though I'm not thrilled about paying Betancourt at least $6 million over the next two, I'll be very happy if that's what it takes to get Greinke. You could do worse than Betancourt as SS, and he should be an upgrade over what Escobar provided last year. I hate to see Cain in particular go, but if that's what it takes I'm fine with it. I see Edmonds still is thinking about playing, so I'd be interested in bringing him back to split time with Gomez again. If this happens, you have to think that this trade would make the Crew the division favorites, and hopefully an extension for Greinke is part of the deal.

Greinke

Gallardo

Marcum

Wolf

Pitcher #5

I think if this does turn out to be true, the Brewers have to be considered NL Central favorites. Last years #4 offense gets 2 #1 SP through trades? I hate to see Escobar and (especially) Cain go, but they were bottom of the order hitters. The thought of Bentancourt at SS and Gomez in CF is pretty scary especially with the lack of quality FA CFs right now, but I like being in win now mode for a change.
