Can we just trade Fielder and start the rebuild while he still has some value.
Nope because Mark A is scared it will effect attendance.

That is a major concern of mine; that we will ignore what is best for the future of the franchise in order to try to hang around .500 so the fans will keep coming.

I sincerely believe that is exactly what happened in '06, '07, '09 and this year so far, too ... how else do you explain some of these crazy trades and signings that have gone down?

I completely agree with you that this organization is more concerned with public perception than what is best for the long term future of the team. We might have to completely bottom out to convince ownership that we are just not contenders. The cardinals are burying us already and I just dont see this team making the wild card either. We are in no mans land right now; hoping to contend when we are really just not good enough.

I admit that worries me as well, and I've voiced those concerns in other threads. I do think it's a bit early to throw in the towel on this season though. Of course, this series again doesn't make me optimistic.

The only thing that will make Mark A change his approach is revenue. i.e. if the fans stop showing up. He is by his very nature a money manager and tigers don't change their stripes. We've seen this again and again, selling low on Hardy and Hall, completely unnessesary trades like aquiring Co Co Cordero (that team wasn't headed to the playoffs, we didn't need to trade Carlos Lee for a closer), giving one year fan favorites big contracts (Hall, Turnbow), etc

You really think Attanasio was behind all those moves?

Generally speaking, yes. I think Mark A sets a certain tone and direction for this team, and while he wants to win he doesn't seem willing to build for a few years to do so. It seems as though he operates under a fear that certain moves will cause the fans to say "same old Brewers" like they did back when the Brewers would trade a Sexson for prospects. If the Brewers had traded Hall & Hardy when their values were high it would have affected attendance. When Turnbow faltered, I bet Mark A said "get us a closer"

That sums up the direction of this organization.

As easy as it is to rip our Brewers, the Padres can freaking pitch. Garland just hammered his own personal petco-park outside corner all day with every pitch. If the Brewers could've just poked a few of those into right maybe the game is different, but the Padres have just been painting all game and series.

Is there any defnintion by which this is not a bad baseball team? Not saying it's a permanent condition, but right now, and until something changes and remains consistently postive for an extended period of time, this has to be one of the two or three worst teams in baseball.

Well yeah, probably. As I joked earlier, our Racing Sausages are by far better than any other franchise's between inning gimmicks

On a serious note, at least we have much more potential than the Nationals, Pirates, Atsros etc ... we're playing that poorly now, but we have more elite players or potentially elite players than those franchises do

hopefully... maybe
