Garnett to Celtics

brettac1

This is why they play the games. Allen and Garnett have played alot of games for their ages. The Celtics also traded a lot of their depth and have a roster full of nobodies behind the "Big Three".

Not saying Boston won't be a contender, but to annoint them in the East at this point seems a bit premature.

Boston still has their MLE to use to add depth if the owner is willing to pay the luxury tax.Add a guy like maybe Brevin Knight for some veteran stability at PG and maybe one of Eddie Jones/Posey/Ruben Patterson for bench depth,they will be very tough to beat.A few additions like that won't lock up the East,but should give them as good a chance as anyone else.

2 months ago, the wolves could have gotten jefferson, green and the 5th pick and they couldnt get it done.

The Celtics on the short term are mortgaging 3-5 years from now to win now. I cant argue with it. They have a window of opportunity right now where they are beyond a shadow of doubt, the best team in the east. This is by no means a lateral move. They took a guy whose all around game is phenomenal and put him on a team where he wont be asked to take 25 shots a game. KG is the absolute perfect player for that type of scenario. He will be in a role similar to the one Shawn Marion has in Phoenix where they wont need to run plays for him and he'll push his team to the next level. Both Pierce and Allen have showed their willingness in the past to distribute the ball as well.

I think some on this board are underestimating how good KG actually is. He's a 6'13" power forward who can handle the ball, defend, score and distribute.

Absolutely. They can contend and will contend in the east as weak as it is. An injury or two will tax them more than most, though.

The guy's you mention are nice but realistically, other than Patterson, no better than what they have.

I'm fairly certain the Celtics would've been butchered mercilessly both on the court and off it if the deals for Allen and Garnett did not happen and the team stood pat with the team it had.

Frankly, the idea really does work well on paper. You've got Garnett in the high/low post wrecking havoc on the Eastern Conference frontcourts without needing to be the entire team on any given night, you've got Allen sniping away at the perimeter without needing to shoulder the main scoring load every night, and then you have Pierce working in-between the other two and not needed to be the quintessential team leader for an underperforming club.

I really think the best kinds of acquisitions that would make this 'Big 3' really click would be a fairly large PG who is a hellacious defender and can score/pass a little and a frontcourt player who really thrives in the low-post and can give Garnett a breather when it comes to abuse.

You can argue all you want about the Celtics mortgaging their future for the immediate dividends, but it feels like you're excercising Small-Market Baseball strategies in a sport that really doesn't work that way. You very rarely find either of the following;

A: A team that lacks a superduperstar but nevertheless is capable of winning a title without their opponent losing their own stars to injuries first. The Pistons of one or two years back? Very unlikely to happen again.

B: A superduperstar who comes almost out of nowhere- and by nowhere I mean they don't get into the draft lottery, or even the first round. Anybody who is legitimately considered a star capable of taking his team to contention by himself is usually drafted really high, Top 10 or even Top 5 at least.

All I know regarding the NBA is that you have to have stars that can score. Boston has 3. I also know you have to be able to defend in the postseason, not sure if the Celts can do that with this club.

As far as Minny, if they decided they had to blow it up, this was not a bad way to do it. Sorting out this mess and doing something with the picks is another thing. Al better work out or they are going to be lottery bound for a long, long time.
