Former All-Star Chris Capuano to pitch for Brevard County Manatees

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, FL - The Milwaukee Brewers have announced left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano, a former 18-game winner and 2006 National League All-Star, will be making a start for the Brevard County Manatees on Tuesday, April 27 at Clearwater.

Capuano, 31, is recovering from the second Tommy John surgery of his career that took place prior to the 2008 season. The left-hander made two appearances during spring training in 2010 and threw 4 1/3 innings with a 4.14 earned run average and five strikeouts.

In 2009, Capuano split time between the two rookie league teams in the Milwaukee organization, the Arizona League Brewers and the Helena Brewers. He started six games and threw nine innings with a 3.00 ERA. He allowed eight hits and two walks and struck out eight.

The Brewers acquired Capuano in a trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks in December 2003 and Capuano won 40 games for Milwaukee from 2004-2007. His best season with the Brewers was in 2005, when he went 18-12 with a 3.99 ERA and 176 strikeouts over 219 innings in 35 starts. Capuano's 35 starts in '05 led the National League.

Capuano went 10-4 with a 3.21 ERA in the first half of the 2006 season and earned his first All-Star game selection.

Periard starting, not Rogers. Still good to see a prospect going
Darn it, I had asked Chad for a Periard velocity update during the PBP, anyone listening in?

Sorry I may have missed it in another thread. How serious was his injury and what was it?
He came up limping following a double yesterday, apparently after injuring his left hamstring, and was removed from the game; no word on the severity yet.

Final: Huntsville 8, Chattanooga 2

Huntsville box score

Alex Periard had his best start of the young season, giving up two runs in five innings on seven hits while striking out five against one walk. His sinker was working, to the tune of a 6/2 GO/AO. Mike McClendon and Brandon Kintzler each kept their ERAs zeroed with four scoreless innings between them to finish the game; nice to see McClendon, who hadn't pitched in a week. Zelous Wheeler, doing his best to live up to the cleanup spot he inherited from Jonathan Lucroy, knocked a three-run homer and finished 2-3 with a walk; Caleb Gindl was also 2-3 with a free pass. Brett Lawrie finished 1-4 with a walk, as did Lee Haydel, filling in at leadoff for the injured Lorenzo Cain. Taylor Green was 1-4.

Jim Henderson must put on a show in batting practice. The reliever pinch hit again, striking out for Periard in the 5th.

Final: Nashville 5, New Orleans 3 (10 innings)

Sounds Win 4th Straight, Top Z's In 10

NashvilleSounds.com

METAIRIE, La. - Shortstop Luis Cruz delivered a two-run single in the

top of the tenth inning to propel the Nashville Sounds to an exciting,

come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Monday

evening at Zephyr Field.

It was the fourth straight win for Nashville (13-6), which improved to

10-1 in road games and 2-1 when playing extra frames this season.

After trailing 3-1 in the eighth, the Sounds rallied to a late tie

before pushing ahead for the first time all night in the decisive tenth.

Erick Almonte drew a one-out walk from Zephyrs reliever Jose Veras to

get things started in the tenth. Norris Hopper (3-for-5) followed with a

double to right to put two runners in scoring position for Cruz, who

plated both men with his game-winning single to center.

Sounds closer Chris Smith retired New Orleans in order in the bottom of

the tenth to preserve the victory and earn his league-leading eighth

save of the year.

The late Nashville rally made a winner out of John Axford (2-2), who

fanned two batters in one scoreless frame of work. Veras (0-1) was

saddled with the loss after surrendering a pair of runs in his lone

inning.

The Zephyrs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on third baseman Hector

Luna's fourth home run of the season, a two-out solo shot to center off

Sounds starter Chris Waters.

New Orleans doubled its advantage in the third when Luna struck again

with two down, plating Bryan Petersen with an RBI single to left.

The Sounds halved the lead to 2-1 in the fifth. Ben Johnson doubled to

right with one out and later scored in unearned fashion when Eric Farris

extended his season-best hitting streak to five games with a two-out

infield single. Luna committed a throwing error from the hot corner on

the play, allowing Johnson to put Nashville on the board.

The Z's added a run in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 3-1

but missed an opportunity for much more after loading the bases with no

outs against Waters.

After the left-hander struck out Jones for the first out, Petersen

plated Scott Cousins with a single to center before Waters popped up

Emilio Bonafacio and reliever Tim Dillard came on to leave the sacks

full of New Orleans baserunners when he induced an inning-ending

groundout from Luna.

Nashville rallied for a pair of runs to tie the contest at 3-3 in the

eighth. Pinch-hitter Brett Dowdy led off with a single against Jones

then scored to make it a one-run affair on Ray Olmedo's one-out double

to left, which chased the New Orleans starter.

After Olmedo stole third, Zephyrs reliever Kasey Olenberger caught Adam

Heether looking before another two-out Z's fielding gaff cost the home

team. Shortstop Ryan Klosterman was unable to handle an Almonte

grounder, allowing Olmedo to cross the dish with the tying run.

Jones, who left in line for a victory following a quality start for the

Z's, was left with a no-decision after holding the Sounds to three runs

(one earned) on five hits over his 7 1/3 innings.

Nashville will try to secure a four-game sweep when the teams wrap up

the series with an 11:30 a.m. contest on Tuesday morning. Left-hander

Chase Wright (1-0, 3.63) will man the bump for the Sounds to face New

Orleans right-hander Jorge Sosa (1-0, 1.80).

Nashville box scoreHeether was 0-5. Farris stole his fourth base. Jonathan Lucroy got the day off.http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=t556&gid=2010_04_26_nasaaa_nozaaa_1&cid=556&t=g_box

Stars score early and often on their way to victory

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

The Huntsville Stars (11-7) scored runs in four of the first five innings to defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts (8-10) by a final score of 8-2 Monday night.

The Lookouts were a mess in the field as they committed four errors. Only two of the eight Stars’ runs were earned.

The Stars have been getting off to fast starts all year long and Monday was no different. With one out in the first inning Brett Lawrie singled to left. He’d advance to third on a wild pitch from Lookouts’ starter Mario Alvarez (2-2), and he’d score on a RBI single from red-hot Zelous Wheeler. Wheeler would finish the game with two hits, two runs scored, and four RBI.

The Stars would run away and hide from the Lookouts in the second frame. The inning started innocently enough with a groundout and a strikeout. But Lee Haydel reached on an error, and the floodgates opened. A wild pick-off attempt from Alvarez allowed the speedy Haydel to scamper around to third.

After Lawrie drew a walk, Caleb Gindl hit what looked like a routine grounder to short. Shortstop Elian Herrera looked to toss it to second base for the force, but no one was covering, so he re-adjusted and fired to first. Gindl would have beat it out anyways, but the throw was low, allowing Lawrie to advance to third and Gindl to second. Meanwhile, Haydel crossed the plate with the game’s second run. Then Wheeler went the opposite way for his first homer of the year, a three run blast to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Lookouts would get two runs back in the top of the fourth off Stars’ pitcher Alex Periard (1-2). A one-out double from Andrew Lambo put the Lookouts in business. After a Mike Rivera (yes, that Mike Rivera) single, Lambo came around to score on a Eduardo Perez base hit up the middle. Scott Van Slyke grounded into a fielder’s choice, which plated Rivera.

But that’s all the offense the Lookouts could muster as Periard went five strong innings to pick up his first win of the year. The Stars would get the runs back in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a bizarre single from Taylor Green. With runners on first and second, Green hit a line drive to left field, Gindl was held up at third base at first, but he strayed a bit off the bag. A snap throw attempt back to third got away, allowing Gindl and Wheeler to come around to score.

A Haydel RBI single in the fifth concluded the scoring for the Stars.

Mike McClendon and Brandon Kintzler combined to toss four shutout innings out of the ‘pen as Stars kept pace with the torrid Tennessee Smokies.

The Stars look to clinch yet another series victory Tuesday night as former first round draft pick Mark Rogers (1-1, 1.98) will be on the hill. You can tune in by going to www.huntsvillestars.com . First pitch is at 7:00 PM Central Time, with the Window World Pre-Game Report beginning at 6:45.

Darn it, I had asked Chad for a Periard velocity update during the PBP, anyone listening in?
I just asked him and he said they don't have a radar gun but he's guessing 90-92.
I was told by a scout sitting two rows below me that he topped out at 94.

That's quite encouraging.

Is it? With low 90s velocity on a sinking FB in MiLB you'd think the results would have been better throughout his career. I'm still confused and my only explanation is that he hasn't developed any of his secondary pitches to the point where it's an out pitch. I really wish a Lee Tunnell, Gord Ash, BA, or anyone with any credibility would address Periard's game in print or audio so we had something to work off of.

Well, it's a lot better than throwing in the 80s like he was last year.
