Link Report for Sunday, April 25th -- Lorenzo Cain injured

Mass Haas

note sure what to make of this off Jones, but 4 singles and 2 walks in the first allowed 5 runs. Of them, one was a single back to Jones, another was a single on a popup to Lawrie. Doesn't sounds like he was hit too hard.

Nice outings by Peralta and Rivas!

Final: Nashville 3, New Orleans 2

Sounds Win 3-2 Over Zephyrs

NashvilleSounds.com

METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds beat the New Orleans Zephyrs 3-2 on

Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field in the second game of a four-game

series.

Sounds right fielder Johnny Raburn went 2-for-3 with a double and the

go-ahead, two-run triple in the sixth inning in the victory. The top

three batters in the Nashville lineup also went a combined 6-for-14.

The Sounds took a quick 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Sounds leadoff

hitter Eric Farris reached base with a single to center field. Ray

Olmedo then singled with Farris advancing to third base. The next batter

Adam Heether followed with a sacrifice fly to left field for his

team-leading 10th RBI for Nashville's first run.

New Orleans took the lead back in the next inning as Danny Richar belted

a two-run homer to right center field, his second home run of the

season.

Nashville started a rally in the top of the sixth inning when catcher

Jonathan Lucroy recorded a base hit to left field followed by a Norris

Hopper walk. Coming into the ballgame later in the inning to relieve

starter Ryan Tucker, Brian Lawrence then offered up a two-run triple to

Raburn that put the Sounds ahead for good at 3-2.

Nashville's bullpen was dominating again in the win, as Zack Braddock,

Mitch Stetter, and Chris Smith combined for four scoreless innings.

Braddock and Stetter have yet to allow a run thus far this season, while

Smith picked up his PCL-leading seventh save in the victory.

Sounds starter Marco Estrada (1-0) had another great outing to pick up

his first win of the season, surrendering just two runs on four hits

with four strikeouts in five innings.

Tucker (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 1/3

innings pitched.

The Sounds and Zephyrs continue with the third game of a four-game

series at 7:00 pm CT on Monday evening at Zephyr Field. Left-hander

starter Chris Waters (2-0, 3.78) takes the hill for Nashville against

New Orleans southpaw Hunter Jones (0-1, 4.20).

Nashville box score

As I mentioned above, it seems odd that Estrada was removed after only 66 pitches. Braddock struck out three in two scoreless innings, allowing just a walk. Stetter was left in after pitching the 8th to face the lefty leading off the 9th and then removed for Smith--I like that bullpen management. Farris was 3-5, Lucroy 2-4, and Heether 1-4.

Final: Chattanooga 7, Huntsville 5 (7 innings)

Huntsville box score

Alex Periard didn't make the start as expected, leaving Mike Jones to bump it for the Stars. The first inning saw Jones allow five runs, though he settled in and tossed two more much-needed innings without allowing a run. Jim Henderson relieved and allowed two runs, the first he's surrendered all year, which turned out to be the margin of victory. Lorenzo Cain smacked a two-RBI double in the 4th, but injured his left hamstring on the play and was removed for a pinch runner; no update yet on either Cain or Periard. Brett Lawrie was 1-4, his one hit being a bases-loaded single that was hit so hard that only one run could score. The Stars' other stars, Caleb Gindl and Taylor Green, didn't start after playing in the first game, though Green did go 0-1 as a pinch hitter.

Huntsville play-by-play

The Stars had plenty of chances to add some more runs, but this stands out as the most glaring of missed opportunities:

Huntsville Bottom 3rd

  • Sean McCraw singles on a fly
ball to center fielder Trayvon Robinson.
  • Offensive
Substitution: Pinch hitter Jim Henderson replaces Mike Jones.
  • Jim
Henderson walks. Sean McCraw to 2nd.
  • Coaching visit to
    mound.
  • Lorenzo Cain walks. Sean McCraw to 3rd. Jim
    Henderson to 2nd.
  • Brett Lawrie singles on a fly ball to left
fielder Tommy Giles. Sean McCraw scores. Jim Henderson to 3rd.
    Lorenzo Cain to 2nd.
  • Zelous Wheeler flies out to right fielder
    Scott Van Slyke.
  • Steffan Wilson strikes out swinging.
  • Chris
Errecart grounds into a force out, fielded by third baseman Anthony
Hatch. Lorenzo Cain out at 3rd.

The single back to Jones was a very good bunt. The pop-up to Lawrie was actually a very high pop behind the mound that all four infielders stood in their tracks and watched. Just about the worst defensive effort on any one play I've seen in all of the Stars' years in Huntsville.

In the first game, Cain led off in 4 of the 6 innings for the Stars.

I'll have some pictures from these games posted tomorrow evening.

Stars split DH with Lookouts

By: Connor Shreve

The Huntsville Stars split Sunday’s doubleheader with the Chattanooga lookouts to kick off a five game series at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

Behind ace Amaury Rivas (3-0 0.78), the Stars put on a well rounded show. Rivas tossed a complete game gem in the seven inning contest allowing only one run, it came in the first and was unearned. Three Stars added multi hit efforts including Lorenzo Cain, who knocked three hits.

Chris Withrow (1-2 9.00) threw for the Lookouts and lasted only one out in to the third inning. He gave up seven runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Huntsville’s 10th win had eluded them through the final two games of the previous series in West Tennessee but the squads’ season long losing streak stayed at two games with the 7-1 win.

Chattanooga did manage to hold on to a precarious lead in game two to salvage the split. After blasting Stars starter Mike Jones for five runs in the first inning, Chattanooga gave up runs in the third, fourth and fifth to lead by just one by the time Alberto Bastardo departed. Huntsville’s best rally came in the sixth with one run but it was cut short by back to back strike outs.

Jones (0-1 8.08), being used as a starter for the first time this season, left after finishing the third having given up five earned runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked three Lookouts batters. Bastardo (2-1 4.95) worked through five innings, allowing four runs and striking out four.

Stars center fielder Lorenzo Cain departed in the fourth inning after pulling up with an unknown injury while running in to second base on a two RBI double.

Game three between the Stars and Lookouts is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT. Pre-game coverage on www.huntsvillestars.com begins at 6:50.

Hey Starsbooster, did you see Cain get injured today? If so, how serious did it look?
It didn't look so bad. I'll admit, I was watching the runner cross the plate didn't see Lo when he pulled up but he appeared to be walking well as he left the field, no limp or favoring of either leg.

I've posted some pictures from Sunday on Facebook.
