There is no way the T-Rats are playing today unless the weather is drastically different in the 35 miles between my home and Time Warner Field.

Lorenzo Cain's first homer of the year is a welcome sight. He had developed useful power by 2008, but seemed to be robbed of it by the knee injury. All three of his extra base hits have come in the last week, and all were on fly balls, much more encouraging than grounders down the line.

Dolis worked over BC again today. I liked the Cubs better when they didn't have any pitching in the system.

Flores gives up 3 in the 10th, BC down 3-0 going to the bottom. Komatsu needs to get a hit for me...

Been listening to the Manatees (now tied at 3-3, bottom of the 10th) -- switched to the Cubs' broadcast when it was clear this Cubs' game was much more compelling than the one in Miller Park.

For nine innings in a scoreless game, the Manatees couldn't even hit a line out in the game log. Then they score three two-out runs in the 10th after Buddy Flores had a miserable top of the 10th.

Odd game, this thing called baseball...

Final: Huntsville 7, Chattanooga 1 (7 innings)

Huntsville box score

Amaury Rivas was extremely effective again today, allowing just an unearned run in an (abbreviated) complete-game four-hitter. Had the game not been foreshortened, Rivas might have gone all nine innings; he needed just 82 pitches as it was. He continues to battle his control a bit, walking three and posting a pedestrian 60% strike percentage, and we'd love to see more traditional dominance (only five strikeouts), but the 12/1 ground out/fly out ratio is dominance of a difference flavor and certainly worthy of notice. Rivas was a particularly ground ball-oriented pitcher last year and was even less so in his first three starts, so we'll have to see if this the start of a new trend or an anomaly. For the hitters, Lorenzo Cain really wishes Logan Schafer would hurry up and get healthy so he can join Jonathan Lucroy in Nashville: 3-4 today with his first homer of the year. Brett Lawrie was 1-4 with two strikeouts, Taylor Green 0-2 with a walk (no doubles two days in a row--must be black magic), and Caleb Gindl 0-4. Zelous Wheeler and Martin Maldonado were perfect, the former 2-2 with a double and a walk and the latter 1-1 with a double, walk, and sac fly.

Huntsville play-by-play

The Stars batted around in the 3rd:

Huntsville Bottom 3rd

  • Lorenzo Cain singles on a ground
ball to left fielder Andrew Lambo.
  • Brett Lawrie singles on a
ground ball to left fielder Andrew Lambo. Lorenzo Cain to 2nd.
  • Caleb
Gindl flies out to center fielder Trayvon Robinson.
  • Zelous
Wheeler doubles (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Trayvon Robinson.
Lorenzo Cain scores. Brett Lawrie scores.
  • Coaching visit
    to mound.
  • Taylor Green walks.
  • Steffan Wilson singles
on a ground ball to center fielder Trayvon Robinson. Zelous Wheeler
    scores. Taylor Green to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Timothy Sexton
    replaces Chris Withrow, batting 9th.
  • Lee Haydel called out on
    strikes.
  • Martin Maldonado doubles (1) on a fly ball to right
fielder Tommy Giles. Taylor Green scores. Steffan Wilson scores.
  • Amaury
    Rivas called out on strikes.

Not sure if there's anything wrong with Alex Periard, but Mike Jones got the start for the Stars in the second game.

EDIT: And what's with pulling Marco Estrada after five innings and only 66 pitches and bringing in...Zach Braddock? It's only 3-2--they might need him later!

Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 4 (14 innings)

Brevard County box score

Eamus Manati! Jealous that Huntsville got to play 14 innings today, BC decided to as well. The game was scoreless through nine innings before the teams traded three-spots in the 10th; the Cubs took the lead again in the top of the 14th but couldn't get a single out in the bottom of the frame as the Manatees got two runs to win it. Wily Peralta was great, striking out five and walking two in six shutout innings, allowing four hits and getting nine ground outs against just two air outs. Dan Meadows got a well-deserved win in relief, as he ate the last four innings, the first three scoreless. Kentrail Davis, in his return to action, went 1-5 with a walk, his leadoff single in the 14th keying the winning rally. Brock Kjeldgaard was on base three times with a single, a walk, and a HBP. Josh Prince was 1-5 with a walk in the leadoff spot. Juan Sanchez had a nice three-hit day, and Anderson de la Rosa was 2-4 with a walk; it was his single that won the game. Erik Komatsu cooled off with an 0-6 showing.

Brevard County play-by-play

The two rallies:

Brevard County Bottom 10th

  • Sergio Miranda singles on a line drive to
    left fielder Nelson Perez.
  • Erik Komatsu grounds out, first
baseman Marwin Gonzalez to pitcher Mike Perconte. Sergio Miranda to
    2nd.
  • Kentrail Davis walks.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard hit by
pitch. Sergio Miranda to 3rd. Kentrail Davis to 2nd.
  • Erik
Miller pops out to first baseman Marwin Gonzalez in foul territory.
  • Juan
Sanchez singles on a line drive to right fielder Kyler Burke. Sergio
Miranda scores. Kentrail Davis scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd.
  • Anderson
De La Rosa singles on a line drive to left fielder Nelson Perez.
Brock Kjeldgaard scores. Juan Sanchez to 2nd.
  • Pitcher
Change: Oswaldo Martinez replaces Mike Perconte.
  • Steve Braun
grounds into a force out, fielded by shortstop Junior Lake. Anderson
De La Rosa out at 2nd.

Brevard County Bottom 14th

  • Kentrail Davis singles on a
line drive to center fielder Brett Jackson.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard
singles on a line drive to left fielder Smaily Borges. Kentrail Davis
    to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Chris Siegfried replaces Oswaldo
    Martinez.
  • Erik Miller reaches on throwing error by pitcher
Chris Siegfried. Kentrail Davis scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd.
  • Juan
Sanchez reaches on throwing error by pitcher Chris Siegfried. Brock
Kjeldgaard to 3rd. Erik Miller to 2nd.
  • Anderson De La Rosa
singles on a fly ball to right fielder Kyler Burke. Brock Kjeldgaard
scores. Erik Miller to 3rd. Juan Sanchez to 2nd.

Nice to have the other team's defense bite them for a change. The game-winning hit by ADLR sounded like it could have been caught, but Burke let it drop in hopes of it going foul, as he wouldn't have had a chance to throw out Kjeldgaard at the plate if he'd caught it.

The Strars B lineup for game 2 is pretty anemic but that might just be my bias against McCraw, Watching the T-Rats made me a fan of Sanchez and made me dislike McCraw, I didn't think he belonged in A ball, certainly not AA. As I'm typing this Wilson Ks with the bases loaded, tough start for him this year.

edit. Does anyone else have problems with a wireless keyboard? I have to edit every post here at home like 3 times because I noticed missed or doubled keystrokes. I've had 3 different kinds, currently using a Kensington, but I've had similar problems with all of them. I actually have my computer hooked up to my HD TV now, so I do all my work from the couch.

Estrada was pitching well, let him go as long as he can (on pitch count) an the bring in Braddock who is well rested. Plus, why don't you let Braddock ( stud at the plate period, especially against righties...hit)...even if he gives the same results that this new kid did, you haven't lost the opportunity to use him at least to feel him out for the next inning? I think Braddock can put an extra base ball in play, you can still change pitchers if he gets in trouble next inning.

At the end of the day, happy for Estrada, not too surprised to find Braddock leads PCL in K's per 9...he's impressive. Bullpen is still lights out...Axford, now Stetter & Smith. Can't complain.

Brevard County rallies twice, tops Daytona in 14 innings

Frank Longobardo/ManateesBaseball.com

In an epic Sunday afternoon showdown, the

Brevard County Manatees rallied twice to defeat the Daytona Cubs 5-4 in

14 innings.

After nine scoreless innings, the Cubs were able to break the tie and

score three runs in the tenth. In the bottom of the inning with two

outs and the bases loaded, Juan Sanchez singled to right to score Sergio

Miranda and Kentrail Davis to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Anderson De La Rosa came up next and singled to left to score Sanchez

and tie the game at 3-3

After three more scoreless innings, Daytona plated one in the 14th on

a ground-rule double by Brett Jackson. Down 4-3 going to the bottom of

the 14th, the Manatees still had one more rally left in them.

Davis and Brock Kjeldgaard each singled off of Daytona's Oswaldo

Martinez to lead off the inning and knocked him out of the game after 3

1/3 innings of relief work.

Chris Siegfried entered the game for the Cubs and fielded a bunt by

Erik Miller and tried to get Davis out at third but threw the ball away,

allowing Davis to score and tie the game.

Another throwing error by Siegfried to third base on a bunt attempt

by Sanchez, allowed Kjeldgaard to reach third safely and put the winning

run 90 feet away.

It would be De La Rosa, who tied the game in the ninth, that singled

to center to score Kjeldgaard and complete a second Manatees rally and

win the game 5-4.

Manatees starter Wily Peralta threw six shutout innings and allowed

just four hits, while walking two and striking out five. Corey Frerichs

and Nick Green followed Peralta with three innings of perfect relief.

Daniel Meadows threw four solid innings for Brevard County as he gave

up one run on four hits and ended up the winner in Sunday's marathon

game.

After an off day on Monday, the Manatees will hit the road again for a

six-game road trip beginning with a three-game series against the

Clearwater Threshers. The first game of that series will be Tuesday at

7:05 p.m.
