Minor League Transactions -- First Half of Season (Pre-Draft)

Brewer Fanatic Staff

RHP Josh Butler's formal 30-day rehab while on the major league disabled list is complete. Butler has been activated from the major league disabled list and optioned to AA Huntsville. This was the first of Butler's three available career options (one per year) off of the major league roster.

Unfortunately, RHP Amaury Rivas has been placed on the 7-day minor league disabled list. As soon as we learn the reasons for that, we'll let you know.

The medical staff does exactly inspire confidence in me anymore. They started this year on fire with Gamel's "not serious" injury that ended up being a Lat tear, and Schafer's groin pull became a tear and he hasn't played yet this season. Schafer's injury turned out to be so serious he's seen 3 different specialists already. This on the heels Green's injury resting all winter before surgery last year, which screwed up his entire season and Periard's should injury that was just left to heal on it's own over the winter as well.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere on the interwebs as of yet, but Brewerfan has learned that RHP Mark Rogers is on his way to Nashville for what is being termed (for now) a two-to-three start stint.

That helps allow for the promotion of LHP Dan Merklinger to AA (prior post) as well.

We imagine if Mark does really well, he could stick in AAA, but given the described context, keep in mind this may be a situation based on current staff levels, with a return to AA possible later this month.

Either way, good luck to Mark with the Sounds!

Another bit of good news. If Angel can put it together offensively in AAA, they Brewers might have some good trading chips this off season involving the catchers with Salome, Lucroy, and Kottaras.

Catcher Ben Johnson has been placed on the 7-day DL at Nashville with an undisclosed injury.

Catcher Martin Maldonado is bumped up from AA Huntsville to fill Johnson's spot, which also frees up playing time for both he and Angel Salome (in Huntsville now, prior post).

Normally we could say that Johnson's DL stint is a "convenience" to preserve depth (with Johnson in the Patrick Arlis role -- Arlis now teamed with Maldonado at AAA), but to be fair to Johnson, we have to assume he's banged up enough to warrant a DL stint.

Mass... Needless to say I'm excited about Mark's promotion and can't wait to get out to the ball park tonight. I remember my friend from Maine calling saying "You have got to come home and see this kid pitch...!!"

It would be nice to see a multiple start scenario and perhaps continue along. Unless he is simply filling a hole in Nashville one would almost assume that he would continue up and onwards!

Haven't seen this anywhere yet, so I'm putting it here -- according to Jen Royle of MASN, former Yankees and Nationals reliever Brian Bruney has signed a minor league deal with the Brewers. He has an out clause if he's not called up in a month.
He probably shouldn't plan on spending much time in Milwaukee. As bad as the bullpen has been, Bruney is pretty awful.
