Soup blames neck injury on bad pillows

Recommended Posts

That's the best excuse he could make? Even more than spending 40 mil on a pillow he could have paid someone to think of a better excuse for his sorry performance. I hope someone steals his pillows and he goes back on the DL.

On another note, the sporting press has enjoyed taking its shots at the Brewers lately, between reporting on (and then largely concurring with) the Randy Levine comments; eating up this Soup thing; and even some of the Yo extension coverage from yesterday was tinged with "this is the same team that was just complaining about its ability to extend Fielder".

For some reason, The Brewers are a trendy whipping post, 4 days into the season.

This really doesn't help.

In recent months I've had a hard time finding a bed pillow that does not leave my neck and shoulders stiff in the morning. Thus I have a degree of empathy for Jeff.

However, I lack the eight-figure salary that would allow me to try lots of pillows; and the timing of this revelation just invites ridicule. It would have been better for him to say nothing.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Have your three starts and then leave please.
We can only hope he is given that short a leash. It's not that I'm cheering against him (we could at least use the pitching depth), but if he gets shelled two or three times, I hope the Brewers are honest with themselves and with him.

I too hope the Brewers are honest in evaluating his performance. But I don't want him to just suck and blow a half dozen games. I'd rather he pitch great and the Brewers end up with the strongest starting rotation in the league this year.

The old Oriole Way included using young pitchers as long relief specialists while they learned the league, then working them into the rotation over time. It's not such a bad thing to do this with Narveson and Parra.

I'd swear that article was from the Onion.

That's what I was thinking when I opened this thread. Jeff, you could have came up with a better story. If the pillow thing is, in fact, true, then make something up. Like something involving the Cubs sabotaging you.

$40 million...and the guy couldn't drop 40 dollars on some memory foam pillows?

(If only we'd given him a Craftmatic adjustable for a signing bonus, he could have won a Cy Young! I'm hoping that's at least part of the option on Yovanni's extension.)

The Twins have been doing that with some success as well. Think of Santana, Liriano, now Duensing. For them it has worked out because of their superstar pitching prospects, but it could work with some slightly less outstanding pitchers.

Edit (to be on topic): This is going to go on those lists of most ridiculous sports injuries ever. Sammy Sosa sneezing, Jeff Kent washing his truck, etc. The only thing is, this is one of the few injuries that has the potential to help the team.

Don't forget Wes Helms slipping on some stairs down in Puerto Rico.

(Wow, two posts about Helms in one day for me. Scary).

Except Parra has already pitched almost 2 complete seasons as a starter for the Brewers.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

And one of those seasons he was purty awful. Worse than Suppan.

That was everybody's way until teams started developing relievers at the minor league level. The best pitchers became starters; those who didn't make the cut became relievers.

As far as the pillow thing, what isn't clear is if Jeff slept on towels for nights on end or if the injury was incurred from one night on a bad pillow. If it's the former, he deserves the criticism. He wouldn't even have needed to go shopping himself; he could have sent a team gofer. If it's the latter, he should be cut slack.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I'll co-sign this, even though I, like every other Brewer fan, have been elss than pleased with his performance here.

This excuse, to me, is less ridiculous than most of the aforementioned injuries, especially the Sosa sneeze and Kent wash. The older you get, a good (or bad) bed or pillow can make an honest difference in your well-being.

But yeah, buy a new pillow after one night of using the towel, and then keep it to yourself.

It's not uncommon for someone to throw out their back with a good honkin' sneeze.

Sneezes cause all sorts of injuries, its a violent thing. And wasn't it pretty much determined that Kent was covering for a motorcycle accident which was a problem since like most baseball contracts he was forbidden from ridding a motorcycle? Who was the Rockie that threw out his back carry venison?
