The top four in the lineup was 9 - 17 and the team only managed 3 runs. Bad luck day.
Yeah. We hit just fine, just couldn't get the big one with guys on base. Had several line shots caught, too.
Yup, had a couple very hard hit balls that were outs that could have scored runs.

it says that the pitcher was on deck and Hart is the only right-handed hitter on the bench. If Hart hits for Edmonds then you have to use another pinch hitter, who would be left-handed anyway, for the pitcher. You lose one of your pinch hitters and a left-handed batter has to hit anyway.

It also says that the best odds of getting a hit weren't reached since the guy who had the best odds was left on deck.

Second largest crowd ever in MP: 45,808. (Largest was still during that horrific September 2003 series with CHC.)

Bummer, but no reason for hopelessness (not even in RF). Best of all, we only have to wait until tomorrow for more.

Of course the reason for that is Macha switched out McGehee. And why McGehee was allowed to hit a righty specialist if your planning on pulling him made no sense.

Rtoherb you are exactly right. It would be a dumb move. And it probably would have been dumb to do it too early because you aren't left with a righty for later in the game. Edmonds hit a hard line drive by the way, it was just right to the second basemen. You really can't complain. So simmer down ya'll.

Managing Issues in Today's game.

1) Lineup - Edmonds should not have been starting. And if you are going to start him, why bat him next to our other left handed batter? He could have just split them with McGehee and been fine.

2) Yo's pitch count. Sending him out in 7th with 96 pitches already was foolish. He was lucky to get out under 110 by getting that double play.

3) Not pinch hitting Hart for Edmonds. You have to put yourself in the best position to win at that moment. If Edmonds gets out, who cares if we don't have another RH batter on the bench.

I think the criticisms of Macha were fair here. He always pushes Yo too far, he didn't split up his lefties in the lineup, and he didn't use Hart at all... which would have been much easier to do if he had set a proper lineup in the first place.

edit. haha dang, zzzmanwitz beat me by a minute

We should have done this earlier, but here's the lineup that took the field on Opening Day, 1970:

Tommy Harper 2B

Russ Snyder CF

Mike Hegan 1B

Danny Walton LF

Steve Hovley RF

Jerry McNertney C

Max Alvis 3B

Ted Kubiak SS

Lew Krausse P

Here's the April 7, 1970, box score.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Gallardo giving up 4 runs in 7 innings rates out to a 3.86 ERA, we can live with that... Zaun was not exactly awe inspiring, although he did have a nice throw on a steal attempt early in the game... Gomez is going to be fun to watch this year...

I love how I could instantly tell you were talking about Samardzija (whose name I had to look up to get the spelling, if it's of any comfort). http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

This was a tough one, but there are bright spots. The Brewers apparently tattooed the ball all day, as getting 12 hits plus a couple of times reaching on errors must mean that you're swinging the bats well. Gallardo, despite clearly not having it, managed to pitch a decent game. On the downside, it is extremely frustrating to see all those LOB.

The biggest bright spot, of course, is that Macha doesn't need to worry about the fifth starter spot anymore, as Narveson clearly indicated his inability to pitch in big spots. Bring on Suppan!

Only got to hear the 7th and 8th innings, but I'm just happy to have baseball back.

It's one game in a 162 game season. Yo must have been decent, and Gomez had a great day (heard his homer).

I'm already looking forward to being able to watch the game tomorrow night.

Not quite. You want colons in there, not semicolons. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Random thoughts after returning home from the game...

The weather was unbelievable for an Opening Day.

I've expected Gomez to be enertaining this year, but today was even more than I hoped. Besides hitting well, his throw from center to first to try to double off a runner (just a little off line) was impressive. Only bad part of the great day today is realizing that he will probably have an equally poor day some day soon.

Enjoyed the irony of the Gomez HR followed by Braun's bunt single.

Suppan was definitely boo'ed during intros. My wife turned to me and said "Don't think those are Sooooups"

I agree with Hawing...it's going to be a challenge for me to cheer for Edmonds (even though he did hit the ball hard in the last at bat)

I know it's just one game, but it was an encouraging one, despite the loss. I especially liked seeing Gomez go 4-for-5. I actually have him on my fantasy team, but did not start him (isn't that always how it goes?). Won't make that mistake tomorrow.

Great, now he is going to go 0fer tomorrow.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
