Minor League Spring Training Games -- Latest: 3/31 and 4/1 box scores

Tuesday the 23rd boxes follow --

Nashville topped Louisville, 6-4. Tike Redman, Brendan Katin, and Erick Almonte each had two hits for the Sounds. Mike Burns started and allowed a run over two innings. Mike Jones gave up five hits and two runs in his three innings of work. Lefty Casey Baron tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

Revisiting prior speculation, it's starting to look more and more like Farris at AAA and Lawrie at AA in the second base derby, isn't it?

Huntsville and Carolina tied, 1-1. The Stars managed just four hits offensively. Evan Anundsen allowed a run in three innings. Brandon Kintzler, Ruben Flores, and Donovan Hand each had scoreless two-inning stints.

I think we're seeing some of the very young kids (Max Walla, Jose Garcia) in a AA corner spot because Caleb Gindl is nursing some kind of injury (not confirmed). Gindl did make one quick appearance in a major league spring training game earlier.

Brevard County and Lynchburg tied, 2-2. Kentrail Davis went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Mike Marseco collected two hits in his two at-bats. Brae Wright started and tossed a scoreless inning. Trey Watten went three scoreless in relief. Southpaw Jon Pokorny danced around three hits in his inning of work to escape unscathed.

***

After graduating 2009's "wave" to Huntsville, Brevard County figures to be a unique mix of 2009 Timber Rattlers plus some players that will bypass Wisconsin altogether. Overall hopes for big on-field success might be guarded, but hopefully they'll surprise.

Wisconsin was shut out by Dayton, 2-0. Chris Dennis and Scott Krieger had two hits apiece. Jake Odorizzi had a strong start for the Timber Rattlers. He pitched four innings, allowing just a hit while striking out five. Damon Krestalude followed with four innings of work, permitting just a run despite three walks and three hits allowed.

Just 58 pitches for Odorizzi in four near-spotless innings, can't wait to follow him all season...

Birmingham edged Huntsville, 2-1. Matt Cline was the highlight offensively, posting a 3-for-3 day. Anderson Machado's solo home run was all the scoring the Stars could muster, however. Amaury Rivas started and allowed a run over three innings. Chuck Lofgren followed with three perfect innings in relief, striking out two.

***

Do we read much into Chuck Lofgren making a AA (relief) appearance in what is billed to be an "all-prospect AA rotation"? Probably not. We don't know anything about Brett Lawrie's brief day. He must have been the DH, because the left-handed throwing Max Walla took over his spot, certainly not at second base. Sorry, all we have is the raw numbers from the box, we'll have to look for Lawrie's next appearance...

Brevard County lost to Winston-Salem, 6-4. Cody Scarpetta and Nick Tyson were touched for three runs apiece during their appearances. Rob Garvey scored a run and drove in one on the offensive side.

Is Kentrail Davis slated to make his pro debut at high-A? We'll see...

Wisconsin beat Kannapolis, 4-1. The Timber Rattlers received strong pitching performances from LHP Del Howell (3 IP, 0 ER) and RHP Nick Bucci (4 IP, 0 ER). D'Vontrey Richardson hit a two-run home run and Franklin Romero chipped in with two singles to pace the offense.

***

Following the young pitching at Wisconsin, Brevard, and Huntsville is going to be a hoot this season, night after night. Did Steven Braun depart early? Again, tough to say with the boxes in the format we get (and don't get us wrong, we're thankful).

Carolina beat Huntsville, 6-3. Mark Rogers was impressive in his four-inning start, allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out four. Matt Cline, Max Walla, and Lee Haydel had two hits apiece to pace the Stars offense.

***

No Brett Lawrie, as we hinted at earlier. Love seeing 23-year-old LHP Caleb Thielbar with an appearance, he posted a 48-to-8 K-to-BB ratio with a 1.53 ERA against younger rookie competition last year. INF Matt Cline hitting like he means it after a season off. RHP Nick Green surrendered three unearned runs in his inning -- have to pitch around the defense sometimes...

Lynchburg edged Brevard County, 7-6. Juan Sanchez collected three hits and Chad Stang hit an inside-the-park home run. Wily Peralta was sharp in four innings of work. He walked three but didn't allow a hit and struck out three.

Rough outing for RHP R.J. Seidel. Haven't added them up, but INF Connor Lind seems to be having multiple-hit games often this spring after struggling in Maryvale in '09 (.205). LHP Matt Costello is like Caleb Thielbar in the prior post, 23 years old, 43-to-9 K-to-BB ratio, 2.06 ERA vs. rookie competition last summer...

I really like some of the minor league pitching options. If bullpen guys go down I'd almost be excited to call up Axford or Braddock at this point. It really saves alot on roster management, and performance when you've got some depth you can actually look forward to using at the upper minor league levels. Perhaps a more interesting question is who does everyone think would be the starter most likely to be called up say around midseason? Butler clearly would be on the radar particularly if it was looking like a spot start I'd imagine. Given the rollercoaster don't you think Melvin would love to give Rogers a shot if he was doing well in AA?

Saturday's boxes, all against the Indians' organization --

Nashville downed Columbus, 4-2, in Saturday's action. Trent Oeltjen hit a three-run homer to provide most of the Sounds offense. RHP Michael Bowman started and tossed four scoreless innings. Brandon Kintzler, Tim Dillard, and John Axford each threw a scoreless frame out of the bullpen.

***

Just 46 pitches for the soon-to-be 23-year-old Bowman in his four innings -- not overlooked by all on these forums, but the 2008 9th round pick out of VMI does fly under the radar. The roster juggling is done on an individual level for these games, as you'd think Bowman is most likely targeted for Huntsville...

Huntsville edged Akron, 7-6. A late rally gave the Stars a lead, thanks in part to a clutch two-run double by Sean McCraw. Donovan Hand, Ruben Flores, Jim Henderson and Rob Hinton pitched scoreless innings in relief. Dan Merklinger started and gave up a three-run homer in the first, but settled down to hold the Aeros scoreless the rest of his appearance.

Caleb Gindl was the DH here, and it may be time for Adam McCalvy to inquire about Brett Lawrie's status for us. With Chris Errecart at first base, Steffan Wilson reminds us he can handle third base as well. An 0-for-2 day on the basepaths...

Kinston dropped Brevard County, 7-5. Efrain Nieves gave the Manatees a good start, keeping the Indians off the board through four. Michael Fiers and Evan Frederickson followed Nieves and were roughed up a bit, allowing seven runs between them. Erik Miller paced the offense with two hits.

***

The lefty Nieves was even more efficient than Michael Bowman earlier (by a pitch). Seems like a typo when Fiers struggles, not so much with Frederickson. Jeremy Jeffress finished up with a clean inning.

Wisconsin shut down Lake County, 3-0. The Timber Rattlers received strong pitching from Kyle Heckathorn (4 IP, 0 ER) and Hiram Burgos (4 IP, 0 ER). Southpaw Jonathan Pokorny picked up the save by working the ninth. D'Vontrey Richardson had a double and scored twice to lead the offense. Sean Halton knocked in two runs.

***

And Kyle Heckathorn is the most efficient of the four-inning shutout starters. Honestly, certainly since Brewerfan's 2001 inception, there simply hasn't been a time when the overall promise of the pitchers in the organization has overshadowed the position players so. This isn't your Fielder-Weeks-Braun minor league system, everyone. Takes some getting used to, doesn't it? Most of us are ready for the renewed and justified mound optimism...

All action from these four Sunday box scores is vs. Reds' organization squads --

Nashville squeaked by Louisville, 4-3. Tike Redman's three-run double was the difference in the game for the Sounds. Chuck Lofgren started and gave up a run on a hit through four innings. A.J. Murray closed it out by tossing two scoreless frames. Give credit to Lofgren, Murray, and Mike Jones -- no unearned runs despite four Sounds errors.

Having Eric Farris and Lorenzo Cain near the top of the AAA lineup should be fun to watch. Angel Salome is hitting 7th here, but let him focus on his defense and he'll still get his AB's. LHP Lofgren back on the AAA squad after a AA appearance last week...

Carolina defeated Huntsville, 7-1. Steffan Wilson was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Chris Errecart and Anderson De La Rosa chipped in with two hits apiece. Mike Burns got the start for the Stars and was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in four innings of work.

Evan Anundsen two unearned runs allowed in his 3.2 innings, which is far more important than how Mike Burns fared. The Brett Lawrie watch continues...

Wisconsin whipped Dayton, 9-2. The Timber Rattlers collected 14 hits, including six of the extra-base hit variety. Peter Fatse had three hits to lead the charge. Damon Krestalude and Jake Odorizzi each threw five innings while allowing only a run apiece.

Six extra-base hits including D'Vontrey Richardson's triple and double; Krestalude and Odorizzi are just toying with batters right now -- save some for the regular season, boys!
