Minor League Spring Training Games -- Latest: 3/31 and 4/1 box scores

Mass Haas
Brewer Fanatic Staff

Hopefully box scores daily for you. Today it's all the Cleveland affiliates, and the Timber Rattlers' Chris Mehring is even twittering updates from Arizona.

Jump on my Chris Dennis bandwagon now, fans. As Mehring notes, two triples in his first two AB's. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm already there with you Mass, I really hope he starts at A+ even though he didn't get many A ABs in WI last year.

Mehring is just a machine with his updates, and that's meant in a very flattering way.

Fun and lengthy post which includes this note --

In the top of the fourth, Jake Odorizzi took over on the mound. I was looking forward to seeing him pitch. There had been a lot of talk from publications and farm system watchers that he would be a Timber Rattler last year. He didn't make it up, but it seems that this may be worth the wait. In his three innings, Odorizzi allowed, well, nothing. he retired all nine batters he faced. There were three strikeouts, five grounders, and a popup.

Baseball America rates Odorizzi as the #9 prospect in the Milwaukee organization and they say "He currently pitches at 88-91mph and touches 93 with his fastball, maintaining that zip throughout his outings...He also features a curveball that's a plus pitch at times." I saw one of those "plus" curveballs. The kid for Lake County who was at the plate had no chance to hit it. None.

He snuck in a quick photo album as well, as mentioned in his linked post above.

Chris knocks it out of the park again -- so within that main site post, you'll find a link to his blog post, which links to his twitter feed, which links to his Facebook photos, all updated from Day 2. So follow the yellow brick links he has! Thanks, Chris!

In 2006 at age 17, RHP Santo Manzanillo walked 47 men in 16.1 innings (not a misprint!) But Chris reminds us why the Brewers have stuck with him all this time --

The best story of the day was the appearance of pitcher Santo Manzanillo in the top of the fourth. I have heard stories about him when he pitched for Helena in 2008. Threw 100 with movement. Helena catchers and opposing Pioneer League hitters were equally nervous. But, Manzanillo missed all of last year with an injury. Today was his first game against opposing hitters in a game situation since the injury. He was not throwing 100. He didn't strikeout anyone. He walked a batter. He threw a wild pitch. He allowed an unearned run. But, none of that mattered. He was out there. And that is good news.

There are some brief recaps of the Nashville Sounds first two games on the Nashville Sounds website. If you click on the story of the 5-5 tie with Charlotte, there is a box that says "spring training" . Then click on the first exhibition game against Columbus for another recap.

As Ebba noted just above, the Sounds have provided some details (and maybe a hint that the two lefty Chris', Waters and Cody, might join Kameron Loe, Chuck Lofgren, and Marco Estrada in the Sounds' rotation).

Please, please keep in mind on any box scores we're able to provide -- just because you see a player listed on a particular squad, that does not mean the player will end up on that team for the regular season.

Friday's Nashville update -- no box score quite yet

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Nashville Sounds opened their 2010 spring schedule with a 4-4 tie against the Columbus Clippers (AAA-Indians) on Friday afternoon at Goodyear Development Complex.

The heart of the Nashville order provided the offense as the #3 through #6 batters (Erick Almonte, Joe Koshansky, Brendan Katin, Taylor Green) each drove in a run on the afternoon.

Catcher Martin Maldonado went 3-for-3, including a pair of doubles, to account for the Sounds' lone multiple-hit effort.

On the mound, left-hander Chris Waters made the start and allowed three runs in three innings of work. Robert Hinton and Mike McClendon each added two scoreless relief innings.

***

Saturday's Nashville action:

The Nashville Sounds tied the Charlotte Knights (AAA-White Sox), 5-5, on Saturday afternoon at Camelback Sports Complex in Glendale, Arizona.

Second baseman Shane Justis hit a two-run homer in the first to give Nashville an early lead, but the Sounds had to rally for three runs in the ninth to tie up the Knights.

Chris Errecart and Taylor Green had two hits apiece for Nashville, and Tike Redman plated two runs with a knock in his lone at-bat of the afternoon.

On the mound, left-hander Chris Cody started and gave up a run over three innings of work. David Johnson, who spent the 2009 campaign in the Sounds' bullpen, allowed an unearned run over two frames of relief action.

Please don't be concerned how the term "bitmap" pastes into these boxes sometimes...

Also from Saturday, Brevard was shut out, 5-0; Wily Peralta faltered a bit, offensively, Erik Miller was 3-for-3 variety style (single, double, triple), another returning arm in LHP Mike Ramlow ...

I don't think we'll see Friday's boxes, but here's Sunday's against the Angels' farm system, including the most impressive, we'll lead off with AA Huntsville -- thanks to Buck Rogers for the heads-up.

Five Huntsville pitchers combined to no-hit Arkansas in a 4-0 victory. Alex Periard tossed the first three innings and was followed by Rafael Lluberes, Mark Willinsky, Brandon Ritchie, and Brandon Rapoza. Offensively, Brett Lawrie was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Steffan Wilson added three hits of his own.

Notation was made that Hernan Iribarren was one of the longet tenured Brewers upon his trade to Texas. The southpaw Lluberes is now entering his 10th year in the system!

Brevard County edged Rancho Cucamonga, 4-3. Eric Arnett started and allowed a run in three innings of work. Kyle Heckathorn followed and struck out four in three scoreless, hitless innings. Nick Tyson tossed two scoreless before Rigoberto Almonte struggled some. In fact, in the wacky world of spring training, it appears the game was allowed to end when Almonte reached his pitch count, even though the Angels' kids were threatening to steal the game. OF Robbie Garvey is a newcomer from the College of Southern Nevada who will make his pro debut this year. Fellow non-drafted free agent catcher Tony Pechek saw action in Maryvale last season and has the perfect name for a pro athlete, as it's pronounced "Paycheck". Well, once he reaches the bigs, anyway...

Wisconsin beat Cedar Rapids, 9-7. Carlos George had two doubles as part of a three-hit day. Peter Fatse and Steven Braun added two hits apiece. On the pitching side, Chad Robinson had the only scoreless outing. Andre Lamontagne, Maverick Lasker, and Rob Currie were all touched up for runs in their appearances.

It'd be something to see the once-heralded Robinson really come back after 2008 shoulder surgery. Did Chris Mehring refer to Lamontagne as "Drew"? Perhaps he prefers that to Andre...

No Helena boxes yet, there were a few of those last spring.

Just a reminder a player's placement does not reflect his eventual team standing. And unfortunately, there will be several spring releases down the road.

Thanks again to the Brewers and their affiliate partners for allowing us to bring these boxes to you. Relatively meaningless, I imagine, but fun to review...

Mass, you probably have a better memory than most regarding this, but are the placements relatively accurate? How much do the players still participating with the big-league club/camp effect the eventual placements of the kids on the farm? Seeing Arnett, Heckathorn and Davis in the BC box scores is rather exciting, although not completely unexpected (although a bummer for T-Rats fans if this holds true). Same goes for Lawrie, as while he finished last year at AA, some of us have wondered if he open with BC.

Or, do the rosters pretty much get blown apart once the official assignments are made?

Chris Mehring wraps up his final day. Have a great return trip to Appleton, and thanks again.

Colby, I'll try and review last year's spring training game thread and see if there were any real hints and surprises.

Shane Justis is a guy you hardly hear about, but deserves a chance to be the starting 2B at Nashville. But if he doesn't, does Eric Farris get bumped two levels along with Brett Lawrie, allowing Lawrie to go to AA?

There may be enough arms to keep Wisconsin's staff buoyant enough to allow the two big boys, Arnett and Heckathorn, to make the jump to Brevard. The two do seem to be tied at the hip for now, so like everybody else, who can wait? Bring it on, we're ready....

If there's one thing we know, assignments can be very last-minute. Taylor Green was an afterthought addition for West Virginia in 2007, and he goes on to be the minor league player of the year.

As much as we appreciate all our friends with the Brewer affiliates, we can promise you this. They do not whisper anything about their final rosters until the gentlemen up top say they can, and we totally respect that. So we wait until Tuesday the 6th, most likely, while basking in the glow of the Brewers' Opening Day win.

I don't see Justis, who is 27 and has a 700ish career OPS in almost 1000 AA AB's as a guy who deserves anything but an organizational soldier moniker. I assume Heether and Olmedo will get most of the PA's at 2B at Nashville. Counsell and Inglett make the backing up Weeks aspect of it meaningless, unless they need a RH platoon partner.
