The Backup catcher-2010 version

In case I missed it, I apologize, but I have not seen much written here or by McCalvy/Witrado/Haudricourt concerning the Brewer brass and their thoughts on who will back up Greg Zaun this year.

Greg Zaun will not catch 150 games this year like our former slugging catcher, Jason Kendall. With that said, from the offseason, Doug Melvin said he wasn't afraid to give one of the Brewers prospects (specifically Lucroy) a chance to be the back up catcher. It seemed to make sense that you could maybe have either Salome or Lucroy catch 2 out of every 5-6 games so they wouldn't exactly turn into the 2009 Mike Rivera. With Kottaras, Treanor, Lucroy, and Salome in the mix for the backup position, all I have read is that the backup spot from day one is either going to be Kottaras or Treanor. Is that pretty much the plan brewfan.netters? Salome has like 7AB's and Lucroy 4 AB's through action thus far. I would think that Lucroy playing 2 days a week would provide more upside than Matt Treanor or George Kottaras, but I suppose the arguement will be made to have Lucroy catch every game for 4-5 days in AAA. But, why not Salome playing 50-60 games in 2010 for the big club?

i'm down in arizona right now, and i haven't seen lucroy play at all. Salome has had a couple at bats. Looks to me, like Kottaras is going to be the backup. he's getting a lot of playing time, and nobody else (besides Zaun) is. So that's my opinion.

Nice things have been said about Kotteras and Treanor, but since Matt is on a minor league deal, it would appear to be George.

Matt will either backup Angel in AAA or go to AA, or given a chance to go elsewhere. Matt can just as easily go from AA to the bigs if someone needs a reserve, and Doug would not stand in his way, so hopefully, he'll stick around.

I would think it'll be Kottaras out of the gate, give Lucroy a chance to get some AAA exposure (he hasn't seen that level yet), and see what the summer brings. I'm almost certain we'll see Lucroy gain this job before years' end.
