Austin or Boise?

leaving for Austin tomorrow. nothing lined up, but it's a better opportunity. love Wisconsin but hate the winters, no jobs at all in Boise. and through Asheville, NC would be absolutely perfect, there are no jobs to speak of in that entire state. the whole of Texas seems to be doing really well economically (relatively speaking), and i think this is a good time of year to go to maybe nab at least a small-time job that keeps me on my feet until something career-like opens up.

not a fan of cold weather at all, although the longer i'm out of Wisconsin, the more i realize how the small cultural differences between regions of the country can make a difference.

God blessed Texas with His own hand

Brought down angels from the promised land

Gave 'em a place where they could dance

If you wanna see heaven brother here's your chance

I've been sent to spread the message

God blessed Texas

AMEN!!!

I saw this post and the reference to the fiercly proud Texans and had to laugh. A friend of mine came to WI for grad school from Texas, when he went home his friends all asked him if it was really easy to get girls since he was from Texas and commented on how cool everyone must think he was since he was from Texas. They were astounded when he said no really cared and in fact people just picked on him for being a Cowboy fan and the whole everything's bigger in Texas theme. He told me it never even crossed their minds that people really weren't automatically impressed with a Texan.

One more thing about Austin - no state income tax in Texas. Had I lived there last year (or Tennessee or Florida or Oregon) I would have ~$18,000 more in my pocket.

Thinking about that long and hard since CA's state income tax is 9.3% (if you make >$48K/year) and sales tax is 9.75%. Oh, and property in any decent neighborhood is >$300/sq. ft.

three months in Austin now and i'm starting to miss North Carolina. not much greenery in Austin, i miss access to the Appalachians and a couple good friends there. i've also been applying for recreation jobs in middle-of-nowhere Texas, so that isn't a thrilling prospect, either. gonna ply a contact there to see if they might have even 10 hours of recreation-related work for me there, and i'll fill in the rest with something else. North Carolina recreation-specific economy is horrible right now, but even 10 hours in the field is work experience even if i have to wait a year for something career-type.

a good friend in North Carolina has a contact who might might might be able to put a good word in for me provided there's a position open, so crossing my fingers. the rough thing about possibly moving back to North Carolina is that my friend here in Austin has been really excited to have me come down, and now after three months here i'm looking at moving away. he's outta Austin in two years as it is, so i guess it's not too bad.
