A Brewers jersey that may or may not exist...

wickedheat

I somehow have it in my head that an early version of the Brewers uniform had "Milwaukee" in plain block letters on the front, but I can't find a picture or image of it anywhere. It must have been after the 1970 version shown here (from Wikipedia):

And it was probably before the 1975-76 versions:

Am I remembering a jersey that didn't exist? That's entirely possible, but if not I'd love to track one down. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I don't believe there was one that fits your description. A quick search of baseball card images from those teams might help.

Bucks jerseys from that era had Milwaukee spelled out in block letters.

Based on the Dressed to the Nines website, it was 'Brewers' in block letters from 70-77. Then in 78 switched to the script 'Milwaukee' for the road jerseys with block 'Brewers' on the home jerseys and stayed like that through the 80's. I don't think they had the alternatives, etc. back in the day so I would guess it doesn't exist.

Short answer & long answer....

The short answer is....No. The team did not use a block letter "Milwaukee" wordmark until 1994.

As noted above, both home and road jerseys sported the "Brewers" across the front until 1978. From 1978 - 1989 the Brewers used a script style "Milwaukee" wordmark on the front. During this period, there were three color variations for the road uniforms (2 different shades of blue and a change to gray) and the fonts used for player numbers varied slightly, but the wordmark stayed the same.

There were no alternate game jerseys during this period, though Royal Blue and & Road Gray "batting practice" jerseys were introduced late in the decade. Neither had a block letter "Milwaukee" wordmark though.

From 1994 - 1996 The Brewers used a German Gothic style block letter "Milwaukee" wordmark. I doubt this is the one you are thinking of however. I can post pictures if needed. The wordmark was altered slightly for the 1997 - 1999 seasons, but was nearly identical.

I hope that helps.

You're right wickedheat, an early version of the Brewers jersey did use block writing and say Milwaukee. An extremely early version. The 1901 Milwaukee Brewers (the franchise that is now the Baltimore Orioles) wore a jersey fitting that description:

edit: The Milwaukee Bears Negro League throwbacks that the team has worn a few times over the past few seasons also fit the description:

I find those Brewers Negro League jerseys amusing. The Milwaukee Bears played all of 12 games in Milwaukee, yet the Brewers have come up with 3 different versions of the jersey (2 on field designs, and a 3rd retail). I somehow doubt the Bears had that many jerseys in their very brief stay in town.

The other thing is that the Brewers actually introduced what we now call the Milwaukee Bears tribute jersey back in 1994, only they called it the "1901 Milwaukee Brewers Tribue" jersey then.

Very interesting, thanks everyone. Knew I could count on this site yet again. I guess what I take from this is that I was remembering a jersey that doesn't exist. And now I wish there were an old jersey with block "MILWAUKEE" on the front...
