MLB 10 The Show/MLB 2K10

Viva La Grinch

With pitchers and catchers soon reporting, I figured that it was time to start this annual spring debate. Both games are coming out in a few weeks, and The Show gameplay trailer is extremely impressive. I don't recall the graphics looking that good in last years game. Love how the footage starts off with a J.J Hardy strikeout.

MLB The Show Video

I have always bought 2K10, since I prefer the Xbox controller and Live service. I knew that The Show had surpassed 2K10 in the last few years, but didn't want to invest in a headset, and finding new friends to play on the PS3. As somebody who might finally switch allegiances, any thoughts on the new games for this year? Seems like there were a bunch of PS3 fans on here last year when we discussed these games. Did any brewerfan leagues get set up, or any interest in a new one for this year?

I only have my PC so MLB2K10 is my only choice.

That said, from what I have seen of the show is that it is THE game to get. But every trailer and game play video I watch looks boring as heck due to the pretty boring commentary from Matt V., Rex H., and Dave C. Don't get me wrong--the graphics are awesome and the game plays a pretty mean and realistic game of baseball. It's unfortunate that just watching the game play videos puts me to sleep with the commentary.

I know that it's a small gripe, especially coming from someone who doesn't own the game and has never played it. But I've read a lot of people on teh internets say the same thing: graphics are gorgeous, gameplay is dang good, commentary repeats itself over and over and over and I end up turning it off after about 4 games.

2k9 had it's problems although I learned to live with them. However, there are literally thousands of owners that gave up on the game after 2 weeks due to various bugs and glitches. Yes, 2k9 had 'em. I lived with it since I didn't have a choice. Plus, it was just great to have a new baseball game on the PC again (MVP 2005 was the last one on PC.)

From what I've read 2k10 is worlds apart from 2k10. I'm looking forward to getting it at some point next month.

The most perplexing thing I've ever thought of for XBox360 and PS3 users (or any console for that matter) is why don't more owners just rent a game first before deciding to buy a game? If you are going to invest $60 on a new game, at least try it out first to see what it's really like. You can read previews and the like all you want leading up to the release of a game but actually trying the game should be the thing that sells the game on you. I WISH you could rent PC games first (I suppose you could argue that you could download the PC demo, but that's only if there even IS a demo.)

I found MLB 09: The Show to be a bit too difficult last year. I know it takes practice and a lot of tweaking, but I found myself getting frustrated a lot if I played on anything higher than the easiest setting. I should probably pick it up again, as I sort of gave up on it a couple months after buying it. It's a great game, I just didn't have the patience for it.

And yes, the commentary was extremely repetitious, especially since it seems like they just re-used the snippets from earlier editions without adding much new commentary.

Just a heads up for anyone interested. I run a show league shortly after it comes out, gp off 2nd or 3rd difficulty. Get me your psn name or talk to me on here and i will keep ya in mind when I start it up. Last year we got to the playoffs in a 8 man league in a 33 game season (or something close to that). Then some personal reasons with 2 of the owners had to put a stop to it.

I've got a 360, so i am stuck with 2k. 2k9 SUCKED, really, really, really bad. The reviews i have read say 10 is much better, but it would have to be, as there is nothing near the horrible pile of excrement that was 2k9. I will try to rent it, before i buy it. However, every year i just can't wait to experience some level of baseball, and end up buying it on the first day.

However, here is the real key. I just watched the trailer, and at the 13 second mark, they show Miller Park(albeit for a milisecond). THE ROOF IS OPEN! This is awesome, as the last two i have played, it was always closed.

yeah, I saw that, too. Playing a full season at Miller Park with the roof closed for every game is sooooooo 2004 (or was it 2003?)

It genuinely made me excited a bit to see that the roof appears to be opened in the new version.

I think you are understating how bad 2k09 was. One of the things that bothered me was the lack of feedback on your pitches. They didn't tell you if you did the pitch right or how to improve. They have fixed that apparently. I wish they would have their controls and another control option for dummies where you just use the A button to hit and you get a meter that fills up for pitching. I love playing baseball games, but I really don't like to take the time with in depth controls.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

It seems like the previews for the 2K baseball games always proclaim that it will be much better than the previous years, and then it comes out and everyone realizes that the improvements are minimal and unimpressive. I'm just going to wait until 2013 when the 2KSports monopoly on baseball games runs up, or maybe until Microsoft decides to release it's own game, however unlikely that is.

The Show rules and I'm pumped to pick it up again in a couple of weeks. I played in a VERY well run league last year. We actually got through 2 entire seasons and are doing a brief third season right now. That probably increased my enjoyment of the game a bit.

I'm pretty sure that I heard this year you will be able to make trades and such in online leagues. That could be very cool if done properly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Two quick points. Read this review of the new career mode in 2K10.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/107/1070564p1.html

it sounds pretty decent(i would probably build a closer, just for fun and to break out of the monotony of franchise mode), but it also alludes to another game of arcade-like offense where hitting 80 home runs isn't out of the question. that makes me pretty sad, to be honest, not shocked in the least. Also, what would be a 2k game without a soundtrack?

* Black Crowes "Go Faster"

* Black Keys "Your Touch"

* Black Sheep "The Choice is Yours"

* Boss Martians "Hey Hey Yeah Yeah"

* Cage the Elephant "Judas"

* Daughtry "Every Time You Turn Around"

* Hotel St. George "It's the Blues"

* Iggy Pop "Lust for Life"

* Jet "Start the Show"

* LCD Soundsystem "Time to Get Away"

* Pearl Jam "The Fixer"

* Phoenix "Lisztomania"

* Ryan Adams "Magick"

* Social Distortion "Bad Luck"

* Tantric "Down and Out"

* The Sugarhill Gang "Rappers Delight"

The one that really stands out to me is the Black Keys. Glad to see them getting some press. Shocked to see this game come out in around 10 days.

EDIT: there is also something called "MLB TODAY", in which you play a game that is actually occurring that day. Seems fun.

Popped in "Show '09" again yesterday. I still am pretty bad at it. Was playing an exhibition against the Nats (as the Brewers with Gallardo starting). I quit when it was an 0-0 game into the 8th inning. I kept hitting lasers that were speared for outs. I guess I should go back and tweak the sliders again ad nauseum.

Really good game, just frustrating for me.

I didn't have a working PS3 for the '09 season, but one thing that has always, ALWAYS bothered me about playing a season or franchise mode was that you didn't get to pick which jersey your team wears. I have only played the show, and the last year I played was 08, but I remember doing the franchise mode and it seemed like every other game my Brewers team would be wearing some weird throwback jersey and never wore the blue alternate ones. Have they changed that yet?

Just a little update....MLB 2K10 released a nine minute video of gameplay from this years game. Looks much better then last years version. I really like where they moved the camera when you are at bat, as it seems to be easier to tell the pitch type and location with that angle. Rumors are demos are coming anytime now.......

I don't like how the numbers & names on the backs of the jerseys look (minor quibble, I know). I agree with VLG on the hitting camera angle. It actually gives you some depth perception, which imo baseball video games have almost always lacked.

I liked the fans fighting over the foul ball (~ 8:35 mark)... that was a neat touch.

stoutdude04,

I'd definitely be interested in doing a league for The Show. I'm "jpjonny5" in the Madden league...just in case you didn't remember.
