Prince's Future

$40 ahead for fans is way too high. Its closer to $20. Forces has teh Brewers with $62m at teh gate. (While Forbes valuations tend to be crap since they fluctuate so much depending on a given year their component numbers tend to be good).

He is probably including concessions in that $40 a head. Maybe merchandise as well, since that isn't included in any of the other things he lists, unless maybe local revenues. But then again, with those things added in, $40 would seem a little conservative.

Then there is this:

Fielder Looking for Mauer & Teixeira Money?

A person familiar with the talks between the Brewers and Prince Fielder suggests that the eight year, $180MM+ contracts signed by Joe Mauer and Mark Teixeira are viewed as just a starting point by the first baseman's people, says SI.com's Jon Heyman. Another suggested that Fielder is seeking to join Alex Rodriguez in the $200MM club.

That seems like a classic Boras tactic... leak a number higher than any realistic amount in the hopes of driving up the baseline of clubs' offers. Nothing has really changed as far as I can tell, though, in terms of this situation. Prince is still under team control through next season, Boras is still his agent, and Adrian Gonzalez, Albert Pujols, & Ryan Howard are all still eligible for free agency after 2011 as well. The only thing I think this leak indicates is that the Brewers & Fielder/Boras are further apart than we may have thought. Mr. QL has it right -- Prince won't be getting that kind of money from anybody.

No way he gets anything close to that especially when you consider the Yankees already for have their 1B for the next several years.

Yeah but they dont have their DH.

Would the Yankees spend 200 mil on a DH? Especially when there is other options out there.

I think we're in good position to stretch this out. No need to get worried yet I think.

The Orioles have done a pretty good job of rebuilding their team so far and aquiring Prince could put them over the top. Plus they have a strong farm system right now and may be a suitable trade partner

Having said that I'm solidly in the "Brewers need to sign Prince" camp

I dont see why they wouldnt. They could skimp on CF or SS defensive specialist and blow it all on a DH that plays 162 games a year and hits in the 4 hole between Teixeira and A-Rod.

The biggest hurdle for the Yankees, IMHO, is that A-Rod might not be able to stay at third much longer, and either he or Tex might have to move to DH. I just don't see how Prince fits into that equation.

Better get Mat Gamel a first baseman glove. I want to sign Prince as much as the next guy, but if he expects this kind of money we just can't. In that case, get Gamel comfortable playing 1B and know that the Brewers can get some quality players back in a trade for Prince when they decide to do that.

I think I'd quietly offer 6/120, and tell Prince he has until the All-Star Break to accept or decline it. He's be 32 at the end of that deal and could cash in one more time if he was still productive. I have a very hard time seeing anyone offer him more than a six year deal, and as good as he is, i don't think any player is worth more than 20 per until they are a once in a lifetime talent at a defensive position (SS, C, maybe CF).

I have the feeling that if Prince re-signs, I will think it's too much. I would not be happy if they gave him 6/120. That's just too long and too much for a mid-market team to pay one of the least valuable positions.

My guess is if they could get him for 6/120, he'd be signed right now.
I agree. And I think that is about the limit of what I'd feel comfortable offering Prince. Beyond that, you risk him declining drastically, or just taking up such a high percentage of the payroll that it would be tough paying guys like Escobar more money down the line.
