Rich Hill signed by Cardinals

Its an MiLB deal, so please move if this isn't the right spot...

For some reason, this one bothers me. Am I crazy for thinking Hill would have been a better signing than Capuano or Mulder (assumed signing)? I'm not sure how bad his injury was, but he has youth on his side.

Duncan will probably have him back to '07 form again. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

Eh idk, I think Capuano was better than Hill when he was healthy, and Peterson can help him bounce back as well. I guess only time will tell though. And we probably won't sign Mulder now. I heard that the Cubs, Cardinals, and Mets are more interested than us now.

This is a nice signing for STL. Hill is injury-prone and inconsistent but he has pitched well in the past. For the price of a minor-league deal, I think this is a smart move. However, he did have labrum surgery in August so I'm not sure what kind of timeline they're hoping for.

The whole Dave Duncan thing is way overstated. He 'fixed' Lohse in 2008 and then Lohse had a 4.74 ERA in 2009. He fixed Wellemeyer in 2008 and then he had a 5.89 ERA in 2009. He fixed Marquis in 2004 and then in 06 he was up at a 6.02 ERA and then in the mid 4s agian. Carpenter is the only pitcher who has shown great improvement under Duncan and kept it. Most of the rest is one year blips here and there followed by an equally crappy year the next. The Cardinals favor defense and play in a pitchers park, that has as much to do with it as anything else.

The difference is Carpenter always was a great talent, he was just young and often injured with Toronto. He was 1st round pick and projected by most to be a front line starter all along. I think Duncan is probably a very good pitching coach, but you're right, most of the miracle turnarounds he engineered weren't sustainable.
