Home Phone Service Question

So I spent years selling cell phones and telling people to ditch their land lines and now I find myself in the unenviable position of needing a home phone. I have recently moved in to a community that is gated and for my guests to get in they need to punch in my name into the box which then would in theory call my phone. Unfortunately the little box will not dial long distance numbers ( I am in New Mexico and have a Wisconsin number).

I don't want to change the number, so I am kicking around getting a local land line. This would be the only thing I would use the land line for though, so I am looking for everyone's suggestions on the most cost-effective way to do this.

Are there pay per minute plans out there for land lines like cell phones? Is VOIP a better option? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'd probably just get a google voice account with a local number that just forwards to my cell phone.

Agreed on the Google Voice option. Seems like a perfect situation to make use of the free number. Best of all, no additional out of pocket expense for you for another phone line.
