still looking for pitching

prophet
I don't know if anyone else saw this yesterday, but they were doing a hot stove version of baseball tonight, yesterday afternoon (might have been a repeat). But, they were talking about Davis signing and Buster Olney was asked if the Brewers were done with pitching, and he gave a flat NO. He said that even with Davis and Wolf the Brewers would most likely add another free agent pitcher. He seemed pretty positive about it and Olney is always a guy that i trust. Do you guys think he means just Mulder or maybe he's talking about someone that can actually contribute. Do you guys think we are still looking to add another starter?

It wouldn't surprise me, although I have to think their payroll has got to be maxed out. I think Mulder is still probably an option, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see a Maine for Hart deal. The Brewers have been scooping up a few outfielders lately (Hopper, Oeltjen) perhaps to give them some flexibility to make a deal if one presents itself.

I like the fact we seem to have some depth to start the season with. Gallardo, Wolf, Davis, Parra, Bush, Suppan, and Vargas should at least keep us from having to see the likes of Burns again. I think the wild card is still Manny Parra. He's the only one that can push this rotation from average to solid. I'm still hopeful, but somehow I think he just might never get it all put together.

The one thing that might make sense would be a Parra trade and a Washburn signing if he'd accept a 1/5 offer with a team option. Not saying I'd advocate this, but if we can get a prospect we like for Manny, we'd seemingly be able to add another lefty starter to the mix.

I guess my point is that I could see us still monitoring Washburn and making room for him with a Parra trade if A) Washburn will come at OUR best value price and B) if Parra can get us what we want for him.

He might not have meant a starting pitcher. prophet's statement didn't say starting pitching, just FA pitching. Either way, I'd be surprised unless another trade went with it, but everyone here seemed to focus on a starter. Myself, I'm guessing he meant Mulder.

While the Brewers needed the depth, you can and should really only sign so many middle of the road guys. Doug Davis was signed to replace innings from Suppan and/or potential innings from Burns/Villanueva/etc. If the Brewers were to sign another Davisish pitcher right now, like Garland, Garland would either be replacing Parra's or Bush's innings, which is not good bang from the buck. There's little or no marginal gain there, assuming either Parra or Bush bounces back. I don't think the Brewers would go out of their way to move from a Wolf/Gallardo/Davis/Bush/Parra-Suppan rotation to a Wolf/Gallardo/Davis/Garland/Parra-Bush-Suppan rotation.

Now, if for some reason Garland (or Washburn) shows up on Melvin's doorstep and wants to play for the league minimum, yah, you sign him.

I'd rather take a chance on Pedro than give anything to get Maine. I still don't see why anyone would be willing to trade a prospect or a starter like Hart to get Maine. That being said, I can't imagine the Brewers are going to get another starter.

People said the same thing about Edwin Jackson last year. Maine previous 3 yrs 06-08 stats cannot be ignored. He's a decent gamble if he comes cheap enough. He's had some shoulder's issues hence the rough 09 & why the Mets may deal him. I wouldn't give Hart for him, because the crew can't replace Hart like they did Hardy. Depends what prospect & reliever could get him.
