Just saw the tweet. A little disappointed that we didn't sign Bedard or Sheets, but I guess Davis is reliable. With the increase in length of games, I'm guessing the signing will improve the beer sales at miller park as well!

I hope they sign Mulder and he makes the rotation. Four lefties!!

I'm sure that we are going to get the statistical evidence that this still doesn't make the Brewers a playoff contender soon, but on the bright side this has at least freaked out "The best fans in baseball." They feel about lefty pitchers the way we feel about guys making their MLB debut.

Could some of that 4.25 still be deferred ala Wolf?

I would tend to doubt that since Wolf's deal was longer to begin with. That said, I'm certainly no expert or insider on these matters.

Haudricourt tweets that Davis' deal could max out at $12.75 million if his 2011 option is exercised and he reaches all his incentives. I'm sure that won't happen, but if he makes all his IP and GS incentives it's still not horrible.

Waiting for the moment Hawing reads the news and joins us with her "Sharpie" excitement. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Overall, a good move. Thoughts of how the rotation would be penciled in?

Gallardo

Wolf

Bush

Davis

Parra

(Suppan to the pen)

finally we have real depth in the rotation. Have to bring out the likes of Naverson, Chris Smith, and Josh Butler was in my opinion the #1 reason we didn't get back to the playoffs. Now if someone goes down or if you need someone to make an emergency start you can start a Soup or a Parra instead of those 3 guys. Hopefully this doesn't mean we try to trade Bush though.

Great value. I'd been holding on to the ridiculous pipe dream that we'd make a run at Big Ben, but given our situation financially (as well as Sheets' overall), I'm more than happy with this deal.

Welcome Back, Sharpie. Let's pretend Johnny Estrada never happened.

I said it in another thread but I'll go with

Gallardo

Wolf

Davis

Open competition between Bush, Parra and Suppan in spring training.

I agree. And it's possible Manny starts the year in the minors. Let's hope Suppan gets moved to the pen though!

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

Parra's out of options. There's no way he clears waivers to make it to AAA.

I sure would've liked to see this deal happen sooner and a Suppan-for-Pierre deal w/ the Dodgers that would've addressed the OF depth, too. Someone out there may still have a poor enough contract to make such a deal possible, though.

Yeah, I'm sure someone ends up in the pen, not AAA. I wouldn't hold your breath for a trade at this point, either.

As much as Suppan gets trashed around here, I guess I'd rather have him as an option for an emergency start than Mike Burns or Carlos Villanueva.

The Brewers have discovered the next Moneyball undervalued market: walks issued. They'll lead the NL.

Melvin from five days ago: "Our new thing is that we're not just looking for innings. We're looking for quality innings. We like our offense and our bullpen. We just need quality innings from our starters."

Huh? Davis is exactly what he said they don't want. Randy Wolf and Doug Davis aren't going to make the league's worst rotation into a competitive one.

I like the additional depth added to the starting rotation...but I'm going to going to guess that the Brewers will lead the league in average length of games this year. Not because their pitchers are deliberate on the mound, but because most of the rotation (except for maybe Gallardo) tends to work a lot with men on base.

Sure it will, just not a good one. Competitive sure though.

We now have 5 starting pitchers capable of pitching to an ERA under 4.50. I doubt all 5 will but they at least are capable of it for this year. 4 of the 5 have been under 4.25 recently.
