twins article about washburn and gamel

Duensing will be 27 entering this season so he is definitely not a player you would be looking to be trading for as the key player in a trade for Gamel. If you are trading Gamel you are going to be trading for someone who is a lot younger than 27 years old or for someone who is an established #2 or #3 type of a starter with 2 or 3 years of control left.

I don't see Duensing + being a logical trade for the Brewers involving someone like Gamel maybe a Hart + trade for Duensing + but not Gamel.

You might get an established pitcher for Gamel, Lawrie, +.... but there is just no way Gamel is bringing one back on his own, he doesn't have enough value.

The market has swung in the last couple of years and power bats don't carry the same value vs pitching as they did in say 2004. I'd be impressed if Melvin could swing a prospect for prospect deal with Gamel, but there is no way Gamel as a centerpiece to the deal would be enough to pull an established #2. Would any of us trade Yo for Gamel? That's essentially what we're talking about here.

We'd need to find a pitcher in a similar situation as Mat to get equal value and honestly no one around the minor leagues is coming to mind off the top of my head. It's pretty disappointing to be a situation where Hardy and Gamel had significantly less value coming out of the 2009 season then they had going in.

I still believe the idea of trading for an established high ceiling pitcher is off the mark, they will cost too much to acquire in prospects at this time. The idea should be to find the next Edwin Jackson or Javier Vazquez before they blossom. High K rate pitchers with high BB rates make perfect sense. No one is dumb enough to trade us a #1 or #2 pitcher for a glorified rental in a Hardy (after 2009 potentially), Fielder (after 2010), Hart, or Gamel. I honestly believe way too many posters around want to hang onto players till their value is the lowest, which is when they are down to the final year of their deal.

I truly hope that this coming wave of pitching talent works out beautifully because I've had my fill of the pitchability guys we've had rolling through the rotation for last 5-6 years.

Looks as if Washburn as tunred down the Twins offer. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/81050797.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUo8cyaiUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

I just have a feeling the Doug is going to make this one happen for the Crew. I'd feel so much better about our chances of competing with the Cardinals with another proven arm in the rotation. Make it happen Dougie!

Supposedly it was a one year deal for $5 million. Maybe the Brewers could offer him something like 2 years and $10 million total to get something done?
I wouldn't do a second year unless it was a mutual option type thing. I may bump the Twins offer by 1.5 million or so. That said, I'd prefer Garland. Both Washburn's second half last season and the thought of him pitching in Miller Park concern me a bit.

I agree that Garland is the better pitcher. But I also think they are very similar. I think the crew has to make sure they get one of the two though. So if Washburn seems more doable, sign him quick. Don't hold out for Garland and risk losing both of them. Sign whichever one you think you can the quickest. Once you have your core needs done with (starting pitching), you can work on improving the little things like upgrades to some of your other positions. But, we need starting pitching most of all, so I would get that done as quick as possible.

I agree with a lot of the posters. I would not give up Gamel for an ok starter when you can get a similar in the FA market without giving up a prospect. Also, I'd keep Gamel around at least another year because there's no guarantee McGehee will put up the #s he did in 2009 on a consistent basis.....see Scotty Pods and Brady Clark.
