Wireless Router Issue

Godspeed

Hello.

I have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router that seems to be on its last legs. It's recently decided to randomly drop the internet connection on wireless only (if I test on the desktop, everything is still fine) that only gets fixed by a router reboot. I've cycled through the modem and reset the router countless times, and it keeps dropping after a set amount of time. Once it's down, I can ping the router and google.com somewhat successfully, but it fails once or twice a test. Seeing that I still stay connected to the router after the internet part goes down, this is an internal issue that is beyond an easy repair, right? It's on the latest firmware (circa 2006). I just want confirmation before I go out and spend an extra $50 on a new one.

Are you torrenting stuff?

A lot of routers have problems and will shut down a connection if it opens up too many simultaneous connections at once.

Also, are you sure no one else is pirating/pinging/attempting to steal your wireless?

Is it exactly the same amount of time every time?

Could it be a heat issue? If you have pets, hair gets everywhere, even in your router, and that can cause overheating fairly easily.

Hmm. I do have a 4-port switch connected to it that services my living room. I added one extra device (BluRay player) to that recently, but that shouldn't be the death of it seeing that it connects to the internet only once in a while. I don't torrent, but I run into this issue regardless of how much bandwidth I'm using. As far as uptime goes, I've had it up for almost 48 hours once, but recently it's been down 2-to-3.

Also, it's a secured network, so I'm pretty sure no one else is on it, but I'll try maybe changing the key. It's in my basement, so overheating isn't an issue. It's plenty dry down there too.

It's over 5 years old at this point. Probably about time to throw in the towel on it. I'm surprised it's lasted half this long, to be honest.

I really don't think it's a security issue. Your internet provider really has no idea whether traffic it's routing is coming from a wireless device or a wired device, since they presumably all flow through your cable modem (or whatever broadband mechanism you're using). If your wired traffic is working but your wireless isn't, it's not a problem with your provider. It's your wireless router.

Have you tried another wireless device on it to see if it encounters the same problem?

Yeah as much as I hate TimeWarner and would like to blame them, I'm certain they're not the source. I encounter the same issue on my older XP laptop as well as my regular Vista laptop, so it's definitely the wireless aspect of the router itself.

Just the two laptops I own. Same issue on both. It tells my computers I'm still connected, but I can't get to any other location in my house or online. It's just shot.

I took the thing apart and re-assembled just for the hell of it earlier. We'll see how long this goaround lasts. Once it goes down again, I'm going on newegg in search for a new one. Thanks for all the suggestions though.
