Ohka to the Red Sox?

Ohka on radar

Right-handed Japanese starter Tomo Ohka is a free agent. Once a young Red Sox starter and teammate of Japanese legend Hideo Nomo in 2001, the 31-year-old Ohka could play the mentor role for 26-year-old Daisuke Matsuzaka.

The Red Sox expressed preliminary interest to Ohka?s agent, Jim Masteralexis, before the GM meetings.

?The discussions were preliminary and polite, and we agreed that we probably would pick up discussions again after the winter meetings,? Masteralexis said.

Ohka is 41-41 the past four seasons with a 3.88 ERA. Pitching for the Expos, Nationals and Brewers the past five years, Ohka has received poor run support.

Ohka has similar career numbers to Bronson Arroyo. He is 48-58 with a 4.04 ERA, 174 starts and a 2.06 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Arroyo is 47-44 with a 4.21 ERA, 161 starts and a 2.17 ratio. Two other AL East clubs as well as a number of NL teams also have inquired about Ohka, Masteralexis said.
