Disabled profile blocks still viewable

It's been discovered that when one "disables" certain Yuku profile blocks, the information contained within is still viewable by savvy members unless one first sets the block's permissions to be viewable to "only me." The "official" response from Yuku is, "Disabling a function removes it from view, but it is unrelated to the actual privacy settings of the block." In other words, this falls into the category of "expected behavior."

Those who think like me assume that "disable" means "not work at all." Actually, it only removes the information from the profile page. Now that we know what's going on, anyone with concerns should check his/her profile settings.

Here's how one "disables" (removes a block from the profile page):

  1. Hit the "Edit Block Layout" link at the top of your profile.

  2. Move the "active block" you'd like to eliminate to the "inactive blocks" area. This can be accomplished by dragging or by hovering over the block and using the icons that appear on the side. The square icon at the top "disables," i.e. moves the block to the inactive area (without necessarily making the information unavailable to others).

  3. Hit the "Done" button at the bottom of the page.
Here's how one controls who can view the information within a particular block.

  1. Hit the "Edit" link at the top of the block in question, e.g. Friends.
  2. Move the Permissions "(who can view)" popup to "Only Me."

  3. Hit the "Save" button.
Here's the rub. If the block you'd like to check is already "disabled," you'll have to "enable" it to get to the privacy settings.

  1. Hit the "Edit Block Layout" link at the top of your profile.
  2. Move the block you'd like to check from the inactive area to the active area. This can be accomplished by dragging or by hitting the "Enable" button that pops up when hovering over the block.

  3. Hit the "Done" button at the bottom of the page.
At that point, you can adjust your privacy settings and if desired, disable the block again.

From what I can tell, this issue applies to the Friends and Comments blocks. While other blocks appear to be "safe," I can't tell for sure.

Take note that many members here have migrated ezBoard profiles. Those profiles were migrated with the Friends and Comments blocks "disabled" while set to be viewable by everyone. In other words, they can be seen by "hacking" one's way in.

Yuku is giving us new profiles sometime in the future; this will cease to be an issue at that point.

And no, I'm not going to tell you how to "hack" one's way in. If you figure it out on your own, please don't post instructions. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
