Cell Phone Question

lodiness

Question for the Verizon Users out there. Do any of you have the Motorola Droid or Storm 2? My contract is coming up, and I have been trying to decide which one to go with (or any other suggestions). Basically need e-mail, and web, everything else is a bonus. Sick of the crappy AT&T network, so looking to switch. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm looking at the Droid as well. Have not heard great things about any of the Storms. I'm sure it varies by personal preference, but I am very impressed by the Droid. The only knock I have heard on it, is that the camera leaves something to be desired...slow refresh rate, and blurry pics more often than not. I hate paying extra for Blackberry data plan, so I avoid it.

My wife has the first Storm from last year and she likes it. The only thing I have heard about the Droid is there a number of different versions of the Google operating system and it has caused a lot of havoc regarding getting some of the downloaded apps to work properly in some cases crashinig the phone completely. There are probably some internet stories on the issue. It was something I read about in some industry reports. It had to do with the open architecture of the app building and people who build apps not building them for all the different versions of the operating system or keeping up with the tweaks to the system. If you don't download a lot of apps it probably doesn't matter.

I played around on the new storm, and thought that it was a lot better than the last one. The knock I heard on the Droid is that it is good for almost everything except for the actual phone. I don't need that many apps. Basically just for e-mail, and surf the web. Never had a smartphone before, so I'm trying to do a little research into which ones are the best. My buddy has an Omnia, and don't really care for it, but I don't know if the improvements on the Omnia 2 will be all that great.

I have the Droid Eris: HTC's android phone for Verizon and love it! I didn't have the iPhone so I can't compare to it, but the Android OS is awesome in my opinion. My last phone used Windows mobile, which was horrible. The Eris does not have an actual keyboard -- you need to use the touchscreen. That's an issue for some, but doesn't bother me at all. If you have any specific questions about the Eris let me know.

Have you considered Sprint at all? Their plans are very inexpensive (compared to other carriers, at least), and they have a few Android options. The Palm Pre is worth looking at as well. There's a Sprint sales rep who always gives out crazy deals - I got my Pre from him for $1. I think he's offering $200 off any phone now, so if you (or anyone) is interested, send me a private message and I'll pass along his info.

I'm also in the market for a new phone/service provider. With Att right now, but like Lodiness, I've had bad luck with them. The only reason I'd consider sticking with att is because of the iphone, but I already have an itouch, so I don't really need one.

Anyways, I did some research and cNet gave the Eris a good review, along with many users on the site who agree with you Hoss. It's also only $99 at Verizon, so I'm definitely leaning towards this one. I'd look into it as well.

Yes, I would love to get back to Sprint, but I moved from Madison to a small town just north, and they don't have any reception where I live ( I roam constantly). It sucks, had them all through college in Oshkosh, and when I moved to Madison, loved them, but no service where I live.

I actually went and tested some phones today. The Moto Droid really didn't impress me that much. Being able to speak everything that you want to do part is cool, but I had 2 different ones freeze up on me while I was there, and it just felt weird. I also checked out the Eris. Seemed pretty solid, the keyboard is a bit small for my fat fingers, but oh well. For some reason I am diggin the Storm 2. The Surepress technology on it is much better than the first version that I checked out. Question for smartphone users. Is it semi-common for the phones to freeze up where you have to reboot them? Seems to be a common gripe with a lot of the phones I've been checking out.
