Gamel, Salome for Buchholz?

Recommended Posts

Gamel Salome and Hart maybe, but again, too little too late. With Cameron and their new catcher, it just doesn't seem to be happening. That Boston rotation is going to be wicked intense and I'm so happy that they are in the AL

i think alot of people are still on the bucholz band wagon after he had that no hitter. i know he's good but alot of his time in the majors hasn't been very succesful (save for the end of this season). i agree, i'd love to have him, but the price for him is really high.

Has anyone asked Doug what the plan is for Gamel for next season? I'd like to hear even his false or vague answer. I wish Tom would ask him... I'd expect him to say something like "Casey is our third baseman or Mat will compete for time at third", but we could actually learn a lot about next year's team if the question were asked and answered however Doug chose to answer it.

I doubt that, personally. I think fans tend to swing their opinions on players far more easily than F.O. types & scouts. I agree that Gamel will be in Nashville, though. No sense in wasting his service time as a reserve.

I don't know. I am not trying to sound down on Gamel at all, TLB. I just don't think Gamel has proven that he is a truly special player. Hopefully he will develop into one. I just don't see a ton of GMs out there pining for a decent fielding corner infielder that has only moderate power and seems to be currently striking out at an alarming rate. I'm not trying to downplay him, I just think if he gets traded right now his value would be more as an added throw in than as a center piece.

Salome probably has much more trade value right now because he plays a much more difficult position.

Oh, I realize you're not trying to sound down on him. I just think that GMs could easily be able to connect the dots as to the most logical reason Gamel stopped mashing at AAA. He did fine for his first call-up, but was understandably less than thrilled to be sent back to Nashville. And I do realize part of his job is to just hit wherever, but like someone said this offseason, these guys aren't robots.

max ramirez is like a better version of Salome - a power hitting catcher with a questionable glove. He was a top prospect until he hurt his wrist this past season, but he's leading the VWL in HR, so it seems like he's back.

I would love to get Gamel to fill the hole at 3B. I think he's unbelievably underrated here. The fact that people mention him in the same breath as McGahee blows my mind. Still don't think I'd give up Buchholz though. I'm of the mindset that good starting pitching is the key to a successfull baseball team, and having cost-controlled starters like Buchholz is what allows you to spend more on a FA like Lackey. It's nice to be able to fill the back end of the rotation with guys like him than Suppan and Silva making 10+ mil/yr to be below average.

I'd be thrilled to acquire Gamel, though. Don't often see prospect for prospect trades, but Gamel for Lars Anderson might work. Lars takes Fielder's spot at 1B when he is traded/leaves. I know his stock has dropped a bit but he was very young for his level and still showed great discipline. I think he'll bounce back and be a good player, but with Rizzo's development, he may not be as essential to the Sox as a 3B. The best 3B in the system (and most advanced) is will middlebrooks in A-ball. Hardly a sure thing.

You seriously think a guy that has done nothing over A ball warrants getting you Gamel straight up? You're not one of those guys that thinks every team is the Red Sox and Yankees farm system, are you?
Coming into the season, Lars was BA's 17th ranked prospect and Gamel was #34. They are definitely comparable players. Lars had a horrible year last year. He was injured at the beginning of the year and, according to interviews I've read with Hazen and McLeod, just never got out of the hole/put too much pressure on himself to perform.

He's still an OBP machine (had an isoD close to .100 in '09), playing young for his level in AA, which he tore up at the end of '08 when healthy. If he rebounds this year, I think he's reestablished his value. Gamel has proven more at higher levels, except MLB. I have no doubt that he'll hit in the Majors, but I think his value is somewhat limited by the fact that he will probably be an average defender at best.

Gamel's advancement and Lars poor '09 probably shift the scales in favor of Gamel. I concede that the Sox would proabbly have to throw in another, lower-level player (a C prospect, outside the top 15, or even 20), but maintain that the basic parameters of this deal are solid. I'd love to hear why not, as long as the reasoning moves beyond "[you think] every team is the Red Sox and Yankees farm system." I think Ellsbury, Pedroia, Lester, Youkilis, Papelbon, Delcarmen, Bard, et al are pretty good evidence that the Sox are their own farm system.

What about Gamel/Lucroy for Buccholz/Reddick or Fife?

Ramirez is less apt to stick at catcher than Angel. I still prefer Angel to Lucroy and if we want quality, it will take another quality player. Reddick fits the plan if we intend to trade Hart. Fife is an underrated arm drafted last year out of college that could move quickly. Would I do it? Probably, but I don't think Lucroy is a special talent like Angel. As for the preference of Reddick or Fife, most would choose Reddick everyday but I have a firm affinity for Fife. And as for Buccholz, he would give us the best 25-or-younger combination in the NL. But the question becomes, can the kid hit?
