DJ Carrasco

This fella would seem to me to be a perfect unsexy signing. He'd prefer to start, but he's a durable RP who could step in if necessary. He and Narveson would fill middle relief roles unless an injury occurred, and along with Butler, Murray, and probably Mulder, gives much needed depth to the rotation that was missing last year.

If all were healthy, he'd probably force CV down to Nashville, which while you'd still have to pay him, also adds to the pitching in reserve. His secondary numbers, while not off-the-chart, are solid enough to indicate future success, or at least, non-suckiness.

He'd also be a guy who'd probably sign a one-year deal if you told him he'd be the first guy to get a shot should a SP go down.

CV barely had a sub 5 ERA last year as a reliever, so he struggled all year. Hoffman, Hawkins, Vargas, Coffey, and Stetter would seem to be locks, and Narveson is out of options and would seemingly be kept after his superb stint as a SP. Needless to say, barring injury, CV is fighting for a spot.

Let's not overrate Carrasco. A lot of his success came in blowouts. He was bad (.311 opponent BA) in high leverage situations. He's 32 and has never been more than the 11th or 12th man on a staff. Even though his ERA last year looked good, his WHIP was about equal to Villanueva in what was a bad year for CV.

Guys like him are a dime a dozen. Think Chris Spurling.
