Frank Catalanotto

Invader3K
Has there been any talk of bringing back "Cat" at all since the season ended? I thought he was a pretty decent pickup and played pretty well for the Brewers. I wouldn't mind seeing him back in a bench role. I'm not sure if they have room though with Gerut apparently coming back, and the addition of Heether.

He didn't play well at all. A .278/.346/.382 line stinks for a OFer. He was replacement level for a second straight year. Mix in bad defense and he's done.

I disagree. His primary role was PH against RH pitchers, not outfielder or slugger. He handled his job in what Brad Nelson proved isn't an easy role.

That said, there's really no reason to bring him back. Iribarren is out of options and can match Catalanotto's production as well as his versatility.

I liked Catalanotto a lot last year, and on the surface I like the idea of him coming back. However, I think that 2 salient negatives pretty much ruined his chances of returning:

1. poor PH-ing

2. 9 RBIs in 144 ABs

The guy can hit decently, but obviously not as well as hoped for in situations more crucial for productivity.

I would rather sign Amezaga as the 5th OF than have Catalanotto again. Amezaga can play some great D in the OF plus he can play any of the three OF spots and would be a RH bat off the bench. Currently only Heether and McGehee would be a RH bat off the bench. Assuming Counsell comes back that gives the Brewers a bench of Counsell, Gerut, Heether, and Iribarren. Also would have to take into consideration if Gamel is in the minors or in the majors.

Amezaga can also play any of the infield positions. I would rather have the versatility in Amezaga than Catalanotto both fill roles but I believe the Brewers can do better than Catalanotto.

I would also rather have Amezaga over Iribarren as a utility player.

McGehee won't be on the bench, and Amezaga gets out almost 70% of the time, so I don't care what side he gets out from.
On the days McGehee would be coming off the bench would be the days he would have off. Amezaga only played 27 games last year plus he would only be playing in an emergency or being the last guy off the bench. Basically your full utility guy who has great defense in both the OF and the IF.

Hart will be on the bench more than McGehee but both figure to be in there most of the time.. Gamel isn't going to make the team out of spring training anyway. Amezaga is a valuable utility guy but with Counsell around, his value would be greatly diminished because Amezaga is a middle infielder by trade that can play CF.

They need a RH bench bat, whether that one plays OF or 3B/1B. Ultimately, if Gamel starts putting up big numbers at Nashville and is still playing 3B and McGehee regresses significantly, McGehee could end up as one of those handy RH bench guys that can play first or third. But I think they surely want to see if McGehee's 09 season wasn't a fluke first. That's going to take half a season at least.

I want him back if only for his
Got to admit, this is the reason I'd miss Cat the most as well. Just surprised that Hawing hasn't chimed in on this thread yet http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
Ah ha haaaa.

It's weird. When "Your Love" was first released, I didn't like it at all, and promptly spent the next 25 years devoting no thought to it - until Frank joined the Brewers and used it as his at-bat music. Now I sing along with every other female fan. I think it's Pavlovian.

Anyway, it's nice of bensheeps to wonder, but I've got Your Love on my iPod now, and bought the Brewers Wives Pet Calendar for 2010 (in which Cat is Mr. April) - so if he's not back I'll be fine.

I probably should start saving for the Catalanotto jersey that will eventually be for sale at the 2010 (or later) clubhouse sale, though.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
