Cubs may be interested in Ben Sheets

He has to be worth more than Harden and Penny if he signed a one year deal. 12 mil/yr is a little steep for a guy that didnt pitch in 09. I wouldnt be suprised if he gets about 10 mil and an option year

Both of those guys pitched last year. There's no way Sheets is worth $10 million next year and I would be shocked if he got anything close to that as a base salary.

It would be fun to see him pitching with the wind blowing out at Wrigley.

I will be highly surprised if Sheets returns to form after a year off. The Sheets I remember was a notoriously slow starter. He will likely be rusty for a long time, and may never completely return to form.

I'm actually of the opinion that since he didn't pitch in '09, he could be worth more than Harden. Harden bombed so badly in Chicago last year that they didn't even offer him arbitration (which even if he would have accepted, would have netted him the contract the Rangers ultimately tendered him, though more up front with nothing in the incentives). Sheets, the last season he toed the rubber, was the NL starter for the All-Star Game.

That said, I really hope I don't have to endure Sheets AND Cameron in Cubby Blue next year.

I hope they sign Sheets and Cameron.

It would be fun to watch Sheets miss most of the season because of injury (like he will) while the Cubs miss they playoffs. Also watching Cameron strike out constantly then hit a homerun when the team is either up by 10 or down by 10 like he does routinely would be fun as well.

Why would the Cubs not have any interest in Harden but would have interest in Sheets? It's unlikely he'll be cheaper...maybe the same though.

Even in years when Sheets has been in and out with various ailments, when he did pitch he generally went deep in games. The Cubs tired of having to eat into their bullpen every time Harden went out there. I think they sensed a mindset in Harden that he wanted out early in games. Now post surgery, Sheets may well be not the pitcher he was before, but he's always had the ace mindset and that meant going deep.

I wouldn't mind them signing Sheets that much, but I'd hate for them to add a top-10 MLB CF like Cameron.

Agreed. They can have Sheets, but it will stink watching Cameron as a Cub, which seems likely, especially when you look at the contract Figgins got. Cubs should have no trouble coming up with the money/years needed to get Cameron.

I'm just the opposite. I really have a feeling that Sheets is going to bounce back nicely. It's not like his arm fell off or anything. Remember that he actually pitched after the original injury. Maybe this injury will actually be a good thing for him because he may have picked up some better training habits. As for Cameron, the Cubs can have him as a type of revenge for Jose Hernandez. Cam and Soriano can provide man made air conditioning for Wrigley.

Id like to see a list of pitchers that have had the same surgery/injury that caused him to miss 2009 and how they have fared while coming back.

Pettite had similar surgery, right? He came back pretty darn strong.

I'd call that a pretty bad comparison...Pettitte had started 30+ games for like 10 seasons before he had that injury, and had nowhere near the injury history that Sheets has had. He also had some help. Sheets has now had the shoulder/elbow double whammy. I don't know how anyone can take a look at his past and say that they think he's gonna come back strong for any extended period of time. Its possible, but unless he comes real cheap in years and dollars, not a chance a team like the Brewers can really take.
