Three Team Blockbuster: NYY/DET/ARI (Granderson to NY, Scherzer to DET, E. Jackson to ARI)

crewcrazy

The huge blockbuster has been rumored since last night, but it looks like the teams have come to an agreement.

Yankees get:

OF Curtis Granderson

Tigers get:

P Max Scherzer

P Daniel Schlereth

P Phil Coke

OF Austin Jackson

Diamondbacks get:

P Edwin Jackson

P Ian Kennedy

The Yanks make out like bandits, getting Granderson for a reliever, an average pitching prospect, and Austin Jackson...the original deal had them including Michael Dunn, but they got the deal done without him. Detroit gets a great return for Granderson, but I don't get Arizona giving up Scherzer for Ed Jackson.

I think this is a good deal for all three clubs involved. New York is actually giving up a decent amount of talent, but they're getting a player they obviously were quite high on (and who is very good). D-Backs are getting two nice pitchers, and Detroit is getting a nice haul too.

The Yankees like Melky as a 4th outfielder...if anything, I think this guarantees that one (if not both) of Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon are gone.

Yeah -- and as for Yankees CFs, the one that's most expendable now is Brett Gardner. Melky doesn't hit well, but he at least favors LHP

And I also agree that Damon & Matsui are likely gone. Especially with Matt Holliday available.

I can't believe that the DBacks would part with Scherzer who is under control for 5 years and developing into a #1 or #2 type starter. He's not worth Jackson and Kennedy in my opinion. Is there anyway to justify this for the Arizona?
The Dbacks are getting ready to ship out Webb if the season doesn't go very well I assume. This is a rather big head scratcher though I don't understand why the Dbacks would put Scherzer in the deal and why they wanted Kennedy. Kennedy was injured last year and is rather comparable to Bush though I don't think Kennedy will be as good as Bush is but he is still a good #4 or #5 type pitcher and he should thrive out in the NL West.

The Dbacks definitely got taken here they only got back an equal but more expensive player in E. Jackson and a #4 or #5 pitcher in Kennedy. I'm not sure what the Dbacks were thinking here. This might be one of the worst trades in a long time this was definitely not a good move for the Dbacks and if I were a fan of the Dbacks I would be outraged by this trade in no way does this deal make the Dbacks any better than last year or in the future. Maybe the Dbacks are looking to keep Jackson long term and have a rotation of Haren and Jackson at the top of the rotation for awhile. While that would be a good rotation I believe Scherzer would have done just as good as Jackson did and at a cheaper price.

This just doesn't really make any sense.

I gotta say that Detroit are the huge winners in this. They get a boatload of prospects/fringe players and save some cash by getting rid of Granderson. The Yankees made a typical Yankees trade of young, cheap players for an expensive veteran. The Diamondbacks...I'm guessing they never made it to the meetings and some impostors are running things because this may be the dumbest trade I have ever seen.

How come the Brewers never seem to be involved in trades of young talented pitchers and multiple teams to make it work? It seems we always hear how no one wants to trade young pitchers with upside or how difficult it is to involve other teams but every offseason 1 or 2 of these go down. I just wish the Brewer could be involved in one, it doesnt' even have to be a fleecing like the Tigers put on AZ.

Look at Granderson's numbers compared to Melky Cabrera's. Keeping Cabrera and signing Damon for seven million would be a cheaper, wiser move. Tying the Yanks into a longer, more expensive contract while dealing your top prospect? Nice move Cashman.

The DBacks give up a promising pitcher they control for 5 years for Jackson. Makes no sense.

The only thing I can figure is that AZ thinks Scherzer is injury prone. The guy is a K machine and has the ceiling of a #1 pitcher. Dumb move on the surface.

I think this is a horrible trade for the Yankees. A-Jax would have put up just as good of numbers as Granderson and Jackson is cheaper and under control for longer. Cashman failed on this one. Well done Tigers!
Jackson would certainly not step in & be a 30-HR threat next season; he's nowhere near the caliber of hitter Granderson is right now (basically a .900 OPS v. RHP talent that plays good defense & needs a platoon partner). One of the Yanks' beat writers (Tyler Kepner) put it best when he said that the Yankees feel like Granderson is Jackson's ceiling, so why not deal for Granderson now.

Look at Granderson's numbers compared to Melky Cabrera's. Keeping Cabrera and signing Damon for seven million would be a cheaper, wiser move. Tying the Yanks into a longer, more expensive contract while dealing your top prospect? Nice move Cashman.
I'm not sure what your point is regarding Granderson & Cabrera. Granderson is the far superior player on both O & D, even with his deficiencies against LHP. Cabrera will likely get a good amount of ABs against LHP next season, backing up all over the OF. Cabrera really hasn't demonstrated any kind of ability to hit RHP, so Granderson is just an ideal fit for NYY imho. Add to that the rumor circulating that Damon is seeking a 3 or 4 year deal.

Wow I like that trade for Detroit, AZ did alright, I'm not a fan of Kennedy at all, but I still really like Jackson. Don't care about the Yankee side of it at all as I'm much more interested in the pitchers who moved around.

Ka-ching for the Tigers. Exactly the kind of move the Brewers should be looking at. I like the Diamondbacks second, and Yankees third but I've never been a Granderson fan so I can understand those who are disparaging the Diamondbacks.
