Jake Fox and Aaron Miles to Oakland for Jeff Gray, 2 Minor Leaguers

For a premium bat and a career utility player, the Cubs get a middle reliever and 2 minor leaguers who aren't even in Oakland's top 25 prospects. Hmmm.

The Cubs got accomplished finding someone to take Miles' $1.7 million of his $2.7 million contract. They needed to include Fox to get that done. Otherwise they were going to have to eat the entire amount because he wasn't in their plans. I just posted yesterday that if Miles got let go by the Cubs, he'd make a decent alternative to Counsell. Maybe the Brewers could still pull a deal with Oakland if they want Miles. Even at $1.7 million, that's a lot for Oakland to spend on a utility player.

Fox clearly is an AL player, so Oakland got what they wanted too.

Fox isn't a premium bat. DH isn't as good as people seem to think, so even if he can't play anywhere else he could still have value, but moving Fox to the AL is something that needed to be done.

Miles is bad, but likely not as bad as he showed last year.

There's no doubt that the A's won the deal on a talent basis. The Cubs saved a little bit of money, although $1.7 million doesn't buy you that much. Most likely Fox will have a couple of decent seasons and get moved when he starts to get expensive. A small stopgap move, IMO.

Jake Fox is an AL only player who may have had many teams interested, but not enough that they would have offered anything of value for him. What I like about this deal is that it gets Aaron Miles out of town and the A's pick up 1.7 mil. My only question is why a tem with Jack Cust would want a nearly identical player, and the same could be said that Aaron Miles is a poor mans Adam Kennedy, and Kennedy isnt that good to begin with.

With Kevin Gregg and Miles gone, and it is inevitable that Milton Bradley is on its way out, all of Jim Hendrys disasterous '08-'09 off season moves are gone. Too bad the season cant be undone.
