Mythology

Spring registration opened for UWM today. Trying to find humanities courses and so far I found 2...

World War 2 in Europe

Mythology

WW2 I know I'd be interested in but what about mythology? Has anyone taken a course in it before?

I took mythology. It's interesting, especially if you like literature as many of the stories influence books are are directly referenced by them. Probably the hardest part is keeping track of all of the normal people Zeus hooked up with.

WW2 in Europe is a great course. If it's the same prof as I had 2 years ago, you'll really enjoy it.

Avoid Mythology at all costs... I can't remember offhand what the prof's name I had was, but it was the worst course I took at UWM.

The guy made us buy his own book with his own translations and his own theories as to what ancient Greek and Roman myths were about.... and spent half of ever class explaining why all the other experts and translators were wrong and he was right.

Mythology was one of my favorite classes. I didn't have the same professor that Baldkin had, as the dude I had was pretty factual and talked about the historical aspect of classical mythology. There was even an AV supplement in which you had to go to once a week to watch slides and identify classical heroes and gods over the course of art history. The class has a lot of memorization, but if you have even a decent memory, it's actually quite easy.

Also, he gave extra credit to people that would draw pictures or write poems or other things that were based on the things we learned.

Egyptian mythology in my mind was a little harder to grasp, because it wasn't so clear-cut and factual. I also took Norse mythology at UWM, of which that professor really challenged you to think outside of the box.

I can see why some people wouldn't like it though, as it is a little more fantasy-esque. Like drezdn noted, if you would like to discover how much of an impact the Greeks had on Western Civilization, and dig hearing crazy stories about Zeus turning into different animals to seduce women, the class is for you.

In Egyptian mythology, the current pharaoh was often the image used for Ra. And as colbyjack said, the Egyptian myths can be a little more...strange, I guess, for want of a better word. They're definitely different from the Greek and Roman myths.

I took an intro mythology at UW-Mad. with (iirc) a Prof. Powell. He was kinda aloof, and it made for your stereotypical huge campus huge class. Given baldkin's comments, I must have had the same guy. Totally remember him spending time trying to make others look bad & himself good.

But I love mythology, so it was totally worth it. Did I mention I love mythology? Well I do. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Zeus was one horny god-king. Ya gotta respect that. I mean, turning yourself into an animal? That's messed up.
