Brewers ask about Millwood

The Brewers have made a few inquiries about Kevin Millwood's availability, but so far the Rangers haven't been inclined to move him. Millwood went 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA last season, but with a change of leagues, he might flourish. So much is up in the air with the Texas ownership situation unresolved. Trading Millwood could allow the Rangers to use some of the money toward John Lackey.

Boston Globe

Millwood has a limited no-trade clause and is set to make $12M in 2010. I wonder if the Brewers think that with Rangers likely signing Sheets - they might be able to trade for Millwood.

McCalvy has a blog up stating that the Rangers and Brewers haven't talked in "several weeks", so I'm not sure how much validity there is to the report. I guess I'd be OK with getting him for a year if we just have to give up Corey Hart or someone else relatively expendable.

The only word that comes to mind for me is "ugh."

I completely admit that I didn't look before posting, but I don't believe we had many guys in the rotation that had 3.67 ERA's or lower over 200 innings last year.

Millwood's not terrible, but "ugh" I want to know who's idea it was to target him. He had the worst K/BB ratio of his career last season, and his lowest GB/FB since 2003. His FIP was 1.13 runs higher than his ERA, that's the worst difference in any year of his career. The timing couldn't be any worse.

He's a terrible trade target.

Let's not forget that Arlington isn't exactly a pitchers park either...

if Hart is enough to get Millwood, than i don't think it's too bad at all. not that i'm the world's biggest Millwood fan, but i can't imagine you could do a ton better when it's just Corey Hart that you'd be trading away.

One year deals are nice, as many of us hate to see arms that are often injured in a long-term commitment.

I've never seen anything that shows FIP to be more predictive than ERA, nor if FIP is more consistent. You might be able to use it to try and get a feel for who had bad luck and the like, but it seems to me many pitchers likely beat it annually.

I don't see Texas dealing Millwood. Their rotation is very young and he's a stabilizing presence. Now if they were to add a veteran FA, then maybe.

McCarthy on the other hand matches Hart in service time. He's had trouble staying healthy and he's not the real power arm that some crave, but when he's pitched, he's had decent success pitching in 2 very hitter friendly AL parks and at 26, his best days could still be ahead of him. I see this as a potential deal that doesn't dramatically favor either team on paper but one that does fit needs that both teams have. Since I think I've brought up a Hart for McCarthy deal several times dating back to August or so, it's nice to read an article that at least mentions both players.

No thank you unless Texas is sending a ton of money back with him. He is older than dirt with a falling strikeout rate, plus he has problems throwing strikes. He was horrible in 2007 and 2008, and though he was decent last year, I'm not interested in 'buying high', even if it is a contract year. This is exactly the type of guy that Melvin needs to learn to pull himself away from.

Millwood had the 8th best ERA in the AL in '09, despite pitching his home games in a noted bandbox. Over the last 3 years, his ERA was 4.58, which probably turns into a 4.10ish ERA in Miller Park and going to the NL. For the most part, he's been healthy and a noted innings eater for a decade.

Add that to the one year deal aspect, he's not bad even at $12M.

It always cracks me up how Doug Melvin is described as a diligent worker, yet he constantly denies talking to anyone. I'm guessing he talks to teams alot more than he admits, or Attanosio would have fired him already. If he really didn't talk to Texas at the most recent meetings, they he should be locked out of the building, but I doubt thats the case.
