Play/Musical Dress Code?

BrewCrewForever
Well Tuesday night I'm taking my wife to see "Rent" at the Marcus Center. It's her favorite musical and I told her like 6 years ago when we first started dating that I would take her to a musical. Finally making good on my word now. I have never been to a musical or play, what is the dress code? I would assume you don't show in jeans, t-shirt and sneakers. Would casual dress shows, jeans, collared shirt and sport jacket work? What is the rule of thumb? Help would be appreciated, thanks.

This is Milwaukee - I've seen people at the theater in Blaze Orange! Seriously, though, be comfortable - or be traumatized by the "experience" of going to a musical by all the baggage surrounding it! You can definitely wear jeans - I'd maybe draw the line at paint-spattered work jeans - but this isn't opera at the Metropolitan in New York. Be comfortable, dress in what you feel you'd wear to go out to a movie with your wife, indeed, it's a date night with your wife, so you wouldn't go out in public looking scuzzy with her would you. Enjoy Rent and have somewhere cheery to go afterwards - you'll need it!

Saw Tosca at the Marcus Center last night. I saw everything from jeans to tuxedos.

As for Rent, jeans and a sport coat are probably OK. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable sitting in the Marcus Center wearing anything less than khaki's but that is me. I am a 30 year old male for reference.

I am going to see Rent at the Marcus Center on Wednesday night so if you could post a review of the show I'd be very interested in reading it.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I'm going with the jeans, collared shirt and sport jacket. It's comfortable and looks nice.

honuswagner21, I will try to post a review. Not sure how good it will be since I know basically nothing about Rent or musicals.

First Priority: Dress in a way that won't let your wife complain about how you're dressed.

Second Priority: Your own personal comfort

Third Priority: The dress code of the masses

And I'm with Bigredrobbo. . .You'll see people in all types of dress, from very dressy to extremely casual.

Have a great time!
