Josh Johnson - contract negotiations at an "impasse"

Johnson seeking a deal similar to Grienke - 4 years/$38M. If that is all it takes to get a pitcher of his caliber, then I think DM should be able to find someone with the money he's freeing up. The question is what will it take to get Johnson from the Marlins? Hopefully it is along the lines of what the Twins got for Santana.

Remember - with the Marlins it's not all about potential, it's also about affordability. That's why guys like McGehee and Gomez may have more value to them than the Brewers. Apparently the Marlins are asking for a ML-ready CF in some deals. But I don't know if the Brewers have enough upper-level minor league talent to get it done. McGehee+Gomez+Salome+Peralta? I don't know if even that will get it done.

The fact that the Marlins aren't jumping to get a deal done is just insane. That's two years of arby and two years of free agency for less than $40m. Obviously there are injury concerns but this is jsut ludicrous. I'd ship Gomez out in a second and go with Gerut and a RH platoonmate for a year or move Cain.

I think they'd want Gomez and Gamel to get the deal done. I like Johnson and would like to get him but to the common brewer fan this is not going to be a move that they are going to get or like! I still have friends that don't understand the Hardy trade!
Who cares what average fans think? Do the best move for the team.

i am curious does Johnson have any injury concerns that should concern the Crew.
He had Tommy John surgery back in 2007, but hasn't had problems with the elbow since. He's a relatively safe bet as far as young pitchers go.

I'd have reservations about trading Gamel for Edwin Jackson, but I'd give him up in a heartbeat for Johnson, especially if he's only looking for 4/$40 at this point.

I agree completely. Jackson and Johnson both fit the bill for what we should be looking for, but Johnson is more in-line with what we should be looking for if we're really willing to give up Gamel.

Gomez, Gamel, and a PTBNL for JJohnson and Paulino/JBaker (I know they have Maybin but they already moved Hermida and are looking at moving CRoss soon...Gomez would bring a lot of value to that South Florida payroll)

I think we spend on this...prospects and cash...

I think the Marlins are going to handle this like they did with Beckett. I wouldn't be surprised if the Marlins trade Johnson this off season now that they are not able to lock up Johnson. I would guess something like Gamel, Scarpetta/Odorizzi, and Salome would be a starting point. Both Gamel and Salome could be starting at 3B and C for the Marlins next year and Scarpetta/Odorizzi would add more pitching depth in the low minors for the Marlins. I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Dykstra or another player who performed poorly this year would be included in the deal also.

it seems like we are giving up alot in some of these projected trades.
If the Brewers can sign Johnson to a 4-year deal at a decent price it is not a lot. If it is just for two years then yeah it would be a lot. Though losing Scarpetta/Odorizzi, Gamel, and Salome would be a lot to lose I believe Johnson would replace some of the lost value if not all of it. Johnson and Gallardo at the top of the rotation for the next 2 or 4 years would be awesome for the Brewers. Not to mention you would have 2 guys who can be aces for two years with Prince and Braun.

If the Brewers lost Scarpetta they could replace him with Odorizzi the only player that is probably not replaceable would be Gamel. If the Brewers made a trade to get Johnson I wouldn't be mad at losing out on a lot of the good prospects the Brewers have.
