Anybody going hunting?

Heading to the neighbor's cabin in Shawano county tomorrow, and taking a cooler & tool box. I don't hunt, but go along to cook, play cards & fix-up the cabin. I'll let them get up before sunrise & sit in the woods for hours, and enjoy the rewards when they return - about every other year someone fills a bonus tag for my freezer. (And between how many co-workers normally take vacation that short week and the economic conditions in our industry, we're furloghed next week so gonna make it more than just a weekend visit this year.)

I'm heading up to the family farm this afternoon.

Honestly, I like being in the woods and away from everything. Not every day, but nothing quite like being in the woods at daybreak and away from all the distractions of life. It's not my turn to cook, so that makes it easier. I'll be back during the week though to spend Thanksgiving with my mother and my in-laws.

I am leaving today but I have to go back monday for class. This is literally my favorite weekend in the whole year, I don't even look forward to Christmas or any other holiday this much. I am very thankful there is no earn a buck this year either.

I hunted in the Cashton, WI area this weekend. Whoa, there are NO DEER around there! The Amish have been slaughtering the herd and it really needs to stop (they hunt 365 days/year). I saw two deer in a total of 18 hours of hunting, both does, and shot one of them because it was already injured. What a bummer of a hunt! The rest of the weekend was awesome though...loved the friend/family time.

So I've been hunting out of the same portable stand for years now in our family woods in the Baraboo Bluffs. Saturday morning I went up there and even though my stand is so easy to find, I simply could not find it. I walked around the same area for an hour before finally giving up and sitting against a tree that had fallen (incidentally which was the tree my old stand was nailed into). I knew I put my stand near the tree which I was sitting against, but it was nowhere to be found.

Finally my suspicions were confirmed when I found a tree which had strap marks on it where my stand had been strapped to the tree for years. Some low life walked into my woods and stole my tree stand. Some people are just greasy. I'll leave it at that to avoid cursing.

The Amish can hunt all year? What do they need to do to keep from getting fined?
They aren't allowed to hunt all year long...they just do. I actually called the DNR earlier this afternoon and am hoping to hear back from them soon...

Spent Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning hunting near Shawano. Saw one deer an hour before we quit yesterday but I didn't have a shot because it was so foggy (I only saw its tail and hind legs walking away). We really expected to see a lot of deer this year because he had our land select-cut so it's a lot more open and easier to see. But a few years ago one of the guys who had a stake in Hot Pockets bought 1500 acres across the road from us and fenced it all in for private hunting. So now there are no deer coming or going to our land from one of the prime spots where they used to always be. I really hate game farms like this, as I don't consider it real hunting. You are basically guaranteed to get a deer (which can cost anywhere from $2500 to $20,000) where most people are just hoping to see a few deer hunting in open land.

My dad and I hunt in public land in the town of Homestead in Florence county. He got a 5 pt buck I didn't see anything opening weekend. Five guys in our camp and we got one deer this year and zero last year. They finally stopped giving out doe permits up there (which they should have done 5 years ago) so there was very little shooting. The deer population is going to continue to drop until they do something about the wolf population, they are everywhere up there.

Agree about the wolves. They say an average wolf will eat 18 deer in a year. We hunt just west of Hayward, WI and last year we saw two wolves just across the lake from our cabin.

Now this year, we had one howling at a train just a couple hundred yards from our cabin on Friday night.

Then, on opening morning, about 10 minutes before sun-up from just over the next ridge I heard a wolf howl about 100 yards from my stand. We've hunted in Hayward since 1978 and these are the first two years we've seen/heard wolves.

We had 12 hunters and bagged five bucks and a doe Saturday thru Wednesday. There was far less shooting this season, though that may also be because conditions were not very good for seeing deer.

Well, I somebody stole my tree stand and to make matters worse, somebody shot one of my dogs. My two dogs have a tendency to chase deer so I did the responsible thing and locked them up a few weeks before season. I kept them in an old chicken coop where they have some room to move around and go outside. Naturally, they decided to break out on opening morning of hunting and chase deer. All I know is that only one of them came back. People around here will shoot dogs that chase deer so I pretty well know what happened.

Sorry to hear about your dog Jonny...that happens a lot where I hunt. I got an 8 point buck on Friday afternoon. Talk about a HUGE THRILL!

VERY NICE! I just got back from my hunt, i didn't get anything(saw about 7 does), but my friend(who was hunting for the first time ever) got a Doe and 5 pointer(we hunt out of state). I was very excited for him. I heard they might increase rifle season here to 16 days next year. Donno how i feel about that yet. As for the Wolves, aren't there enough now, where the DNR said they are going to allow hunting soon?

Really sorry to hear about your dog. That makes me sick to think about.

From the Wisconsin DNR: http://dnr.wi.gov/ORG/LAND/ER/factsheets/mammals/wolf.htm

"A few hunters continue to kill wolves, believing that such actions will help the deer herd. It is important to place in perspective the impact of wolves preying on deer. Each wolf kills about 20 deer per year. Multiply this by the number of wolves found in Wisconsin in recent years (630), and approximately 13,000 deer may be consumed by wolves annually. This compares to over 40,000 deer hit by cars each year, and about 450,000 deer shot annually by hunters statewide. Within the northern and central forests where most wolves live, wolves kill similar numbers of deer as are killed by vehicles (about 13,000), and about 1/10 of those killed by hunters (127,000 in 2008). Wolves are a factor in the deer herd, but only one of many factors that affects the total number of deer on the landscape."

Wolves are NOT a problem in Wisconsin.

I don't want to make this political, but if the DNR counts wolves as well as they count deer, the numbers they are putting out are pretty much worthless.

Do you have any evidence that indicates that the DNR cannot accurately estimate the deer population in Wisconsin? I'd argue that the DNR's count of wolves in Wisconsin is accurate because they have been monitoring the population since 1979 when there were only 25 wolves in the state.

Yes I do. Link I remember specifically the DNR coming out before the 2008 deer season saying that there is a record number of deer in the state only having to eat crow when the deer kill total was down roughly 25%. Can you really believe the DNR when they tell everyone that there is a record number of deer in the state when most of the state had earn a buck several years in a row? Most of the counties that don't have earn a buck are chosen not because of the actual deer numbers but becuase their local state representative do not want it in thier county, this was told to me by someone within the DNR. If hunters wouldn't have raised such a big fuss there would have been yet another earn a buck this year too. Most people I talked to barely seen any deer and the opening weekend deer kill in my county was down 46%. The last few years have left me scratching my head over what the DNR is doing and what their intentions are.

Also that is a nice buck bigjase.
